People consider that Russian writer Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (袧懈泻芯谢邪泄 袙邪褋懈谢褜械胁懈褔 袚芯谐芯谢褜) founded realism in Russian literature. His works include The Overcoat (1842) and Dead Souls (1842).

Ukrainian birth, heritage, and upbringing of Gogol influenced many of his written works among the most beloved in the tradition of Russian-language literature. Most critics see Gogol as the first Russian realist. His biting satire, comic realism, and descriptions of Russian provincials and petty bureaucrats influenced later Russian masters Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, and especially Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Gogol wittily said many later Russian maxims.

Gogol first used the techniques of surrealism and the grotesque in his works The Nose , Viy , The Overcoat , and Nevsky Prospekt . Ukrainian upbringing, culture, and folklore influenced his early works, such as Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka .
His later writing satirized political corruption in the Russian empire in Dead Souls .

As autumn turns crisp and the wind bites right through your soul like it's blowing down another barren avenue, leaves billowing in its wake and long shadows of trees stretching out as if to drag you back into the wildness of the night, my mind always returns to the story Viy from Nikolai Gogol. Combining Ukrainian folklore with his own fresh invention, Gogol鈥檚 Viy is a legitimately terrifying tale of witches and goblins assailing a frightened, young Monastery student made to stand solitary vigil for three nights over the corpse of a girl. A girl who鈥檚 demise came at his own hands, a girl who rises from the casket in the dark to summon a tempest of terrors around the young philosopher who must hope his circle of protection or his heart, beating rapidly as it is beleaguered by horrors, don鈥檛 give out. A favorite spooky story with writing that is so seasonally crisp in the mind you鈥檇 swear the words arrive like the satisfying crunch of autumn leaves under the steady footfalls of an approaching monster, Viy is a lasting classic of folk horror and fun.

鈥Weary to death, he began to repeat all the prayers which he knew, and all the formulas of exorcism against evil spirits鈥鈥

When I was 19 I applied to work at a restaurant and one of the interview questions was 鈥渋f you had endless money to complete a project, what would you use it for. I responded that I would make a full-length film adaptation of Gogol鈥檚 Viy using Jim Henson puppets. Which鈥asn鈥檛 reason to deny me the job so hey, Henson studio, hit me up. This eerily excellent story of Khoma the young philosopher鈥檚 three nights of terror with the reanimated corpse of a witch originally appeared alongside in Gogol鈥檚 1835 collection . Before writing the surreal and comically absurdist stories he is best known for, such as or , Gogol wrote primarily about Ukrainian provincial life. Like his later stories, these Ukrainian tales also contain a great deal of whimsical humor and skews life into grotesqueries that better reveal the human condition and landscape of moral actions using folklore and rural society instead of the lampooning of bureaucracy that he would turn to later. While living in St. Petersburg, Gogol would asking for details on Ukrainian customs and countryside culture and tales and it is clear these early stories are a heartfelt attempt at bringing his heritage to the wider world of readers.

Viy draws on many aspects of Slavic folklore. The trope of the 鈥渙ld hag鈥 that transforms into a beautiful young girl and the depiction of witches that add an element of fear by highlighting sexual agency in a old, childless, outcast (which is unfortunately a rather misogynistic tradition and 鈥檚 In Defense of Witches is a great read on the subject) is a large part of folklore with witches like Baba Yaga being a common feature in those tales. As are the many goblins and ghouls we find, though the titular Viy is of particular note. In his introduction for the story Gogol pulls a little trick on the reader and attempts to frame him as a figure of legend:
鈥The Viy is a monstrous creation of popular fancy. It is the name which the inhabitants of Little Russia give to the king of gnomes, whose eyelashes reach to the ground. The following story is a specimen of such folklore. I have made no alterations, but reproduce it in the same simple form in which I heard it.鈥

While Viy has lived on as the infamous king of gnomes, scholars have found no evidence of him appearing prior to this tale and is likely a product of Gogol鈥檚 invention. Which is an aspect of his storytelling I鈥檝e always really enjoyed as Gogol tends to frame his tales as secondhand retellings, as if the author himself is relating to us over a pint or around a fire some story that had been related to him and it pulls us closer into the story with the fictional insistence of it as true. Which would be quite terrifying here because, as we soon learn, demons walk amongst us and the dead can rise to chase us.

鈥Raising his voice, he started to sing in different voices, wishing to muffle the remains of his fear. But every moment he kept turning his eyes to the coffin, as if involuntarily asking the question: 鈥淲hat if she gets up, if she rises?鈥
But the coffin did not stir. If only there had been some sound, some living creature, even a cricket making an answering sound in the corner! All that could be heard was the slight crackling of a distant candle or the faint plopping sound of a drop of wax falling to the floor.
鈥淲hat if she gets up?
She lifted her head.
鈥

Still from the

This is such a terrific and terrifying tale. Starting with a bit of humor as we see the bumbling students leaving the Monastery school for summer, spreading like locusts over the countryside to eat all they can scrounge by begging or stealing (it is implied the students are rather impoverished) only for this trio of mischief makers to find their way to the remote lodgings of an elderly woman. Separated in order to sleep, the old woman comes to Khoda in the night for what is less amorous adventures but something more like equestrian adventure as she betwitches him and rides him like a faithful steed ( would later nod to this scene in his novel The Master and Margarita). Misadventures abound lead Khoda to his three night trials and tribulations where the real terror begins and this is a story that had me white-knuckled and gripped the whole way through. Each turn of the page only turns up the tension as a cavalcade of horrors descend upon the church, growing in intensity every night. The first time I read it I went out for an evening stroll and into the autumn wind and鈥mmediately decided against it. Because who knows if Viy is out there鈥

鈥A sudden silence followed; the howling of wolves was heard in the distance, and soon heavy footsteps resounded through the church. Thomas looked up furtively and saw that an ungainly human figure with crooked legs was being led into the church. He was quite covered with black soil, and his hands and feet resembled knotted roots. He trod heavily and stumbled at every step. His eyelids were of enormous length.鈥

An excellent seasonal read that heaps on the scaries as we try to survive phantasmagoria alongside the philosopher. Viy has long been a favorite story of mine. A wonderful tale steeped in folklore and the tradition of the supernatural existing alongside ordinary rural life, Gogol crafted a story that feels just as provocative and frightening as it did nearly 200 years ago. And now you can share in the fun and read the whole thing . Happy Halloween!

First time I heard The Viy read to me by my grandfather when I didn鈥檛 even know the alphabet. When I was a schoolboy I read it few times. Last time I read it about seven years ago.
A sudden silence followed; the howling of wolves was heard in the distance, and soon heavy footsteps resounded through the church. Thomas looked up furtively and saw that an ungainly human figure with crooked legs was being led into the church. He was quite covered with black soil, and his hands and feet resembled knotted roots. He trod heavily and stumbled at every step. His eyelids were of enormous length.

Of course there are plenty of more frightening tales but this story is told in the uniquely colourful language and it manages to create a unique atmosphere of mysterious verisimilitude.
But the most winning is the quizzical and teasing stance of the author.
Even after the ages of civilized life, our primordial fears are still with us.

Recensione Ebook in inglese

A classical creepy short story.

Wanted to read this classic since I've seen the "Viy" 2015 horror movie (as you can see by the gifs) and I was not disappointed at all. I've read it on my kindle in just one session, liked Gogol's style, the story and the chilling atmosphere: the daughter of a russian colonel, thought being a vampire by villagers, asks before passing that young philosophe Thomas Brutus pray near her coffin for 3 nights... they are going to be three real long nights for the poor seminarist. An escalation of terror until the appearing of the Viy.

A great gothic tale higly recommended to anyone.

Nikolaj Vasil'evi膷 Gogol

芦Dio m'assista, non ho paura, non ho paura!禄 disse e, tracciato il consueto cerchio attorno a s茅, cominci貌 a rammentare tutti i suoi scongiuri.

Viy, a novella included in Migorod (1835), is in many respects a typical tale of Gogol鈥檚 Ukrainian period: based loosely on folk tradition, it incorporates vivid supernatural elements, and, although its jazzy improvisatory prose extends its riffs for too many bars (to continue the jazz metaphor), occasionally dissipating its own power in the process, it is still so original in style, so dazzling in its effects, that it can still stake a claim to be considered a masterpiece.

It begins in typical folktale fashion: three wandering university students鈥攁 theologian, a rhetorician, and a philosopher鈥攕eek lodging for the night at the house of an old woman. This woman, a witch who can transform her appearance, leads the young philopsopher Khoma Brut on a journey that involves him in the exorcism of a wealthy Cossack鈥檚 dead daughter and the eventual confrontation with the formidable 鈥渢he Viy.鈥

鈥淭he Viy,鈥 AKA 鈥淜ing of the Gnomes,鈥 is indeed really something: an all-seeing demon with a face of iron and eyelids that reach to the ground. (Gogol claims he is a figure of folklore, but scholars cannot find him in the Ukrainian tradition. Odds are Gogol created the demon Viy himself.) But, for my representative passage, I prefer to include an earlier passage where Khoma Brut, carrying the old witch on his back, experiences her transformation into a beautiful young woman. Notice the growing eroticism of the passage:
The perspiration flowed from him in streams; he experienced simultaneously a strange feeling of oppression and delight in all his being. Often he felt as though he had no longer a heart, and pressed his hand on his breast with alarm.

Weary to death, he began to repeat all the prayers which he knew, and all the formulas of exorcism against evil spirits. Suddenly he experienced a certain relief. He felt that his pace was slackening; the witch weighed less heavily on his shoulders . . . .

Then suddenly he wrenched himself away from under the witch, and sprang on her back in his turn. She began to run, with short, trembling steps indeed, but so rapidly that he could hardly breathe. So swiftly did she run that she hardly seemed to touch the ground. . . . He seized a stick that was lying on the ground, and began to belabor the hag with all his might. She uttered a wild cry, which at first sounded raging and threatening; then it became gradually weaker and more gentle, till at last it sounded quite low like the pleasant tones of a silver bell, so that it penetrated his innermost soul. Involuntarily the thought passed through his mind:鈥淚s she really an old woman?鈥

鈥淎h! I can go no farther,鈥 she said in a faint voice, and sank to the earth.

He knelt beside her, and looked in her eyes. The dawn was red in the sky, and in the distance glimmered the gilt domes of the churches of Kiev. Before him lay a beautiful maiden with thick, dishevelled hair and long eyelashes. Unconsciously she had stretched out her white, bare arms, and her tear-filled eyes gazed at the sky.

Khoma trembled like an aspen-leaf. Sympathy, and a strange feeling of excitement, and a hitherto unknown fear overpowered him. He began to run with all his might. His heart beat violently, and he could not explain to himself what a strange, new feeling had seized him. He did not wish to return to the village, but hastened towards Kiev, thinking all the way as he went of his weird, unaccountable adventure.

I watched a wild fantasy film produced in the Ukraine in 2014 called Forbidden Empire and it鈥檚 original title was Viy. Lo and behold! The film was based on this 1835 short story by Gogol. So I had to read the story.

The film was loosely based on the story (and I see that there was another film from 2018 called Gogol Viy).

Essentially this is a story based upon older local legend and myth where a student meets a witch and then has to read prayers for a dead girl for three successive nights to protect her soul.

While the creepy horror story was fun, I was entranced by the description of rural life in 1830s Ukraine.

Gogol's writing is amazing. It's so atmospheric, alive and full of details, it really puts you in the time and space where the story happens. And because it's set in the land that was at the time part of the Russian Empire and is now Ukraine, I really was interested in seeing what it was like then, how the people lived and talked.

As for Viy, the story was reasonably creepy in an old-time fairy tale kind of way. Really unique aesthetic.

I'll definitely read more Gogol.

It is a short horror story about a witch that I found quite entertaining. However, rare and incomprehensible. The illustrations are peculiar and help to better understand the story, but not much.
In short, it is very good to get out of a reading slump.

Y las primeras p谩ginas me resultaron tediosas, absurdas y pretensiosas.
Y entonces comienzas a fliparlo.

I've come to appreciate Gogol for his biting satires of society and bureaucracy and the absurdist elements he weaves into his deliciously amusing stories. This one had potential but misses the mark, getting caught up initially in inane academic satire and then seemingly drifting without much direction.

"Forest, meadow, sky, valleys- all seemed to be sleeping with open eyes."

Not Gogol at his best but that doesn't make it any less Gogolian - lushy writing that creates a creepy atmosphere with much Slavic folklore incorporated, I enjoyed it.

It is strange how I can read Horror novels or a Thriller and be not impressed at all, and then I decide to re-read this short tale (at day-time) and I find myself being so freaked out that I can't fall asleep.
Usually I don't mind the dead very much, or ghost or evil spirits, but the ones from this tale get under my skin every single time.
Maybe it is the simple write-style, maybe it is the eerie atmosphere that is established from the very beginning, I honestly don't know, but every time I read this tale I am really terrified.
Or it is the fact that I sometimes imagine myself standing inside an old church at night, reading prayers next to an open coffin of a witch that tried to enslave me. And c'mon, who wants to experience such a situation?!
Anyway, it is one of the scariest tales I have ever read, and I read every single one of Poe's tales and many contemporary horror novels.

Is there something Gogol couldn't write? I'm starting to doubt it. I've read his absurd comedies, I've read into Taras Bulba and now I read the Vij - a horror story. Yes, an actual horror story, and Gogol mastered it perfectly.

The story's quite short, so I'll just summarise the plot by saying that a young philosopher travels to a small city where he lives in a guesthouse, however the landlady turns out to be a witch and rides him, on his shoulder, through the night, as if she was possessing him. Finally, the philosopher manages to shake her off and beats her to death. As she's dying, she's transforming into a beautiful young girl.
Said girl turns out to be a major's daughter and her dying wish is to have the young philosopher read beneath her coffin for three nights. And every night she raises from the dead, turning into something even more awful every night.

I loved the way in which the story was written, and even though some parts were slightly tedious, the actually very comical Gogol managed to write a serious, scary story as if that was everything he wrote. Man, you gotta love Gogol!

驴Qu茅 contiene?

Terrifying and unforgiving, spiced with humour and irony. If you are a fan of Disney endings, don't read Gogol's The Viy.
