Half-succubus Jazz Watkins spends her nights knee-deep in Chicago drug dens hunting Suecai—an evil kind of incubi and succubae who devour the souls of humans. But when a leader of the Suecai curses her, Jazz has to track him down. Either she kills him before the curse burns through her, or she’ll become a full-fledged, out of control, soul-sucking monster.
She’s got a handful of weeks, absolutely no leads, and only her sexy best guy-friend, Khan, covering her back. But will the growing attraction she feels for Khan get in the way of her mission to save her own life?
Trakena Prevost was born and raised in the great state of Texas, where everything IS bigger and the people are very friendly. She spends most of her time oscillating between being completely obsessed with reading and watching Korean dramas, and writing down the fantastic tales rumbling around in her head. When not reading and writing, Trakena spends her time working in HR for a major medical system in Houston, and hanging out with her family and friends.
Trakena has always loved the many worlds she's found in books, where everything was possible. As a child, you would often catch her enjoying a good story in the comfort of the AC, instead of wilting in the Houston heat (she showed great intelligence...even then). It didn't occur to Trakena that the fanciful stories she made up for fun could one day be out in the world, but now that they are she can't imagine it any other way!
Cursed was a really good read giving the reader a slightly different take on the subject of Succubi & Incubi.
As the synopsis tells us, Jazz Watkins is a half succubus and a warrior for her kind. She and her team go out at night, hunting the Suecai. The Suecai are the evil kind of their species and they take pleasure in sucking the souls out of unsuspecting humans, it is in the taking of the complete soul and killing the human that they become evil.
When hunting one night, Jazz has a second attempt at catching the leader of the Suecai but finds herself the one who is captured and then cursed. The curse will turn her into one of which she hunts so with the time she has left, she heads of to find the leader and kill him. Her best friend Kahn has her back as always and joins her on the quest and with time running out, it’s now or never for the attraction that simmers between them. One thing is for sure…Jazz will never be the same again.
I really enjoyed Cursed and thought it was great introduction to the series. Straight off we get two sides in the evil Suecai and the Dorcai that hunt them. As I mentioned earlier, this is a slightly different take on Succubi and Incubi normally they gain energy by indulging in sexual activity but in this case they don’t.. although it does involve a kiss. Also, they drain the soul or chi in this and it is like a drug when first turning to Suecai so think more like soul/chi vampires where one side will devour you but the other will only take the necessary sip.
Jazz has the potential to be an awesome kick ass character and in this you can see the warrior that she was starting to evolve into something else, we do see her at her best but also at her worst and throughout the story we will see what she is made of. The love connection comes by way of Khan, her best friend and member of her team who always has her back. I thought their chemistry and progression from friends to more was very natural and believable, they had some very sweet moments and I liked that Jazz’s predicament leant an urgency to the situation by making them both realise what they felt for each other and that time was of the essence. There was what seemed to be the beginnings of a love triangle and to be fair, I did feel the connection there too although Khan will always be my choice.
The storyline was good and I liked everything about it, the way Jazz was cursed was a great way to bring about the action because not only does it make her wanted by the Suecai but wanted by her own people for what she may become. She has a foot in both worlds now and must traverse both in order to come to grips with what has been done to her. I liked the use of magic in this and that it introduced another type of person into the mix, after all it was a wizard who performed the curse on Jazz and that is where she might find answers. The answers that she does find are a bit of a shock but she uses that for her benefit and a sort of plan B to her situation. The ultimate goal is always to find the Leader and kill him so they plan for that but again, plans don’t always follow the way they were laid and Jazz has some hard times ahead. The story was paced very well and full of everything a book of this genre should have action, chases, fighting, enemies, plots, a race against time, magic and a nice dose of romance that makes this book a very enjoyable read and I will be looking out for the sequel.
** ARC was provided by author in exchange for an honest review **
This book has sat on my kindle for quite a while. It was possibly one of the first books I received once I began to sign up to promotion sites.
Nothing made me not want to read it, it was just that more and more ARC's were added to the pile and it got pushed to the back. It was one of the main reasons I ended up creating a spreadsheet, so I had something to work on.
The story intrigued me from the Synopsis.
It did take a while for me to get into it, and that is not mainly down to the book, but life in general but over the last few days I have been unable to put it down.
The story follows Jasmine, a Demi-Dorgai who hunt out evil Suecai who feed of human's chi and kill them. Only, the Gunshi has a plan to kidnap Jazz and unite both her powerful family and his. After a failed attempt, the Gunshi fails and it's not until the next does he get what he wants and that is to turn Jazz into a full Dorgai.
Through the story we follow Jazz and her erratic behavior-due to wanting revenge- and watch her deal with not only her upcoming change and mission to reverse it, but also her feelings for Khan, her childhood friend and love.
Some of the scenes, mainly the battle one's confused me but it was certainly a good read.
Sticking with it paid off and I'm glad I didn't give up.
Jazz is a bit headstrong and teenage “stupid at times, but she is only 17, and a lot of time she is driven by her heart and not her head because of when her mother was captured and tortured. And this book does have a brewing romance, maybe a romance triangle? Don’t know for sure, but the next book may answer some questions for us. This is a good, action-packed read that will keep you on your toes, and it was a refreshing change of pace in the paranormal genre. Reviewed by Cyrene

Cursed is Trakena Prevost’s debut novel, and the first in her new Guardian Chronicles. Detailing a magical world of action and danger, Cursed explores succubae and witch magic in a fast paced and gripping storyline that is a great start to a new series!
Personally I found Cursed to be an enjoyable read. I enjoyed Prevost’s concept, and considering I haven’t read many books where succubae feature, I enjoyed having the chance to explore them in this book. Adequately written and deeply action based, Cursed features a bunch of great fight sequences and follows heroine Jasmine "Jazz" Watkins and her battle against the evil succubae known as Suecai who prey on humans and absorb their energy. As a Dorgai—a non-lethal succubae, Jazz it one of the only things that stands between the Suecai and the innocents they prey on.
Having spent her life learning to train, hunt and kill Suecai, Jazz is lethal and has a personal vendetta against the Suecai; something that does manage to get her in trouble from time to time, but with the help of her best friend and comrade Khan, Jazz manages to thrive. Until a Suecai leader decides to turn Jazz into the one thing she despises. one of them, and Jazz’s only chance is to branch out on her own and hunt down the person who cursed her to begin with.
Reading the story through Jazz’s eyes was an exciting experience. Jazz is a stong capable young woman and is really quite deadly. She has a sharp tongue and attitude and uses this as a blade. I really enjoyed the diversity in Cursed and liked that our heroine is a coloured woman. Honestly I don’t think there enough main characters with this kind of heritage and have to applaud Prevost for not shying away from this
I felt this story continued to move forward well and that Prevost showed enough of her world to keep me entertained, but I really feel like this is only the tip of the iceberg and that there’s still a lot more to see. As Jazz and her best friend/love interest Kahn delve into the magician’s world and that of the Suecai, Prevost ensures her readers will want to know more.
Overall Cursed is a good introduction to a promising new series and I look forward to reading more!

I don't now what I was expecting from Cursed but I really enjoyed Jazz's story and found myself engrossed by this young adult story.
Jazz (Jasmine) is a teenage Dorgai who works hard to save humans from the Suecai (I have to admit the name did make me think of the Moari from Vampire Academy at first). Jazz is extremely fierce and caring (a great combo in YA female leads) but is also coming to terms with personal tragedy and the pressures of growing up.
The world building in Cursed and the overall concept was really clever. The story evolves around the incubi and succubae, who fight over humans. Jazz finds herself cursed to turn into a Suecai and the story follows her struggle to prevent this. Throw in a powerful leader dad, teenage hormones, fierce battles and a super hot bestie called Khan, then Jazz has a lot of problems.
I really liked Jazz and Khan. Usually I do tend to find the guy best friend annoying but in Cursed I enjoyed the development in their relationship. I wasn't expecting Cal to be thrown into the mix and I had a slight concern we were going to be faced with another OTT love triangle.
I did find Jazz slightly mopey at times but she redeemed herself - it's difficult to say any more without writing spoilers.
Cursed reminded me of a sort of Succubus Blues combined with the Kate Daniels series, but in a YA bundle. Oh and with some Vampire Academy goodness thrown into the mix (except without the vampires). I'm looking forward to reading about more of Jazz's adventures!

3.5 Stars
Cursed starts with a high-adrenaline action scene and just continues racing ahead. There really isn't much of a dull moment or a lull in this action-packed YA paranormal novel. This is another novel that is difficult to review without spoilers so I'll keep it brief.
Jazz is a teenage guardian--basically a hunter after the evil version of her kind. Being brought up in this atmosphere, she is very professional and focused for a teenager. She reminded me more of someone in their twenties... at least she carried herself that way. Sure she had her whiny moments, but who doesn't. She's a kick-ass heroine, a leader, and a major fighter. Her romantic feelings seem to confuse her, almost like they don't belong in her high-stakes life.
Best-friend and romantic interest Khan is a great sidekick. He always has Jazz's back--or at least tries to. She's a bit of a spitfire and has a bad tendency to take off on her own, leaving her backup breathing her dust. We are also introduced to Cal partway through which screams love triangle between the three characters.
I enjoyed the action scenes and the intriguing underworld created by Ms. Prevost. This is a fast-paced read as Jazz is thrown into action scene after action scene to stop the curse that could turn her into that which she hunts. The incubus/succubus angle (minus sex) is a bit odd. They suck human essence to survive. Jazz's sect only takes what they need leaving humans alive and well, while the other sect kills. The two sects area bit confusing. I'm sure more will come to light as this is the first in a series.

Jazz is feisty, independent and struggles with sticking with her team as a group, or going it alone to get revenge for her mother. When she finds herself on the wrong end of a curse, Jazz needs to be strong and keep her hunger under control. With the help of her best friend Khan and a newly aquired friend, Jazz sets out to break the curse.
Did I like the book? Yes, I did. I wouldn't say it had me hooked as I was able to pick it up and put it down and it didn't keep me up late into the night eagerly devouring chapters. I did like the main characters and their "supporting cast".
The plot/storyline: This didn't really strike me as being a unique storyline/plot as I've read other books that have the same basic plot.
Action & Romance: Can't fault the book, it has both. The fight scenes are well described and the romance is not "in your face" and doesn't overshadow the whole book.
Overall, I would recommend 'Cursed' to YA readers because although it failed to haul me in, it was well written and should entertain it's target audiences. 3.5 Shamrocks from me, and I would read the next instalment to see if it gets me more engrossed.
I received the book from Trakena Prevost and Paranormal Romance & Authors that Rock for an honest review.
Jazz is half succubus and a team leader that fights Seucai that drain humans of her life force. Along with her best friend Khan. She has a tendency to break rules and go off by herself which puts herself and her team in danger. Revenge for her mother tends to take over her focus at time.
Jazz is a wonderful character she is strong, independent thinking and a kick butt kind of girl. Khan is her best friend and there is an attraction between them that makes the book sizzle. yet the focus of the story is the fighting and fitting in among humans. The story moves along at a good pace and keeps you turning the pages. The secondary characters are interesting enough you want to hear more about them.
As for the ending of the book, it does leave it open for more in the series. They aren't done fighting yet. Excellent book for young adults, teens and readers of paranormal.
Jazz is all about kicking evil sucubus butt espically after they took her mom and changed her into a frightened unsure woman. When a raid turns up a leader of the bad sucubus she's determined to bring him down. But it could be more than Jazz ever bargined for.
Jazz is only 17, but she's a smart self assured 17 year old. She knows when to do something and when to ask for help and she's a kick butt heroine. She does what she knows what's right even when it is a little risky. Her moral compus is high and she is very grounded even in the toughest situations.
There is a bit of a romantic element to this book, but it's mostly an action packed very intresting paranormal. It's a bit different from what I've read before and was definitely an enjoyable read. This is definitely a series I'll be continuing to read as it comes out!
If you like stories with a twist, love triangles and intrigue, give Cursed a go. Well-written, full of soul-munching baddies, badass enforcers and a plot that will leave you guessing. Follow Jazz through her curse and the choices she must make - between what is right and what is easy - that will literally define her existence forever.
A kick butt heroine on a quest to stop an evil wizard before he can turn her into the very thing she hates. What could be more exciting?!?! I loved the action in this book, and it had just enough romance to keep me turning the pages. I'm looking forward to more books in the series.
