"गुनाहो� का देवत�" के बा� भारती जी की यह दूसरी किता� है जो मैंन� पढ़ी� माणि� मुल्ला जैसे किरदार के कंधे पर बंदू� रखकर कैसा निशाना लगाय� है! तत्काली� कहानीकारो� एव� उपन्यासकारों के सा�-सा� मार्क्सवादियों को भी नही छोड़ा। इसके सा� ही आप इस� पढ़क� कहानी कहने और लिखन� का फन भी सी� सकते हैं। किता� ज्ञानवर्धक होने के सा�-सा� मनोरंज� भी है�

“Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda� literally means “The seventh horse pulling the chariot of the sun.� One of the books of which I first saw the movie and then read the book. Movie by Shyam Benegal is brilliant so is Manik Mull played by Rajat Kapoor. Usually in case of movie adaptations of literature one or the other is disappointing. But in this rare case both are brilliant.
The novel is in narration style where Manik Mulla (name is very suggestive Hindu and Muslim both) tells story of failed romances of three women, to his friends on seven lazy summer afternoons. There are three heroines Jamuna (a simple middle class homely girl), Leela or Lily (the intellectual, independent, strong, feminist) and Satti (a feisty lower class woman). All three were in love in Manik Mulla at different point of times. Jamuna couldn’t marry her lover Tanna, because he is a coward and subsequently married off to an old man who dies. Widow Jamuna finds solace and happiness in extramarital relationship with a tongewala. Leela is married to Tanna, the coward lover of Jamuna and is dissatisfied because he is not strong and intellectual enough to be her husband. The third Satti love Manik mulla but she is raped and murdered by Mahesar Dayal, evil father of Tanna. This novel looks at the disappointments faced by these women when it comes to love and how they cope up with their lives.
Dharamveer Bharti initially was in Prayogawadi (experimentalism) camp. This was a movement in Hindi literature called Prayogawad (led by Vatsayan agayeya) which concentrated on human misery, depression, aloofness, loneliness, helplessness and total cut off from society. Influenced by Kafka, Freud and all which concentrated mainly on psychological aspect of humans and ignored social completely. Its opposite was Pragatiwad (Progressivism) influenced by Marxist, Leninist philosophy and promoted socialism.
His earlier novel “Gunaho ka Dewta� (another classic) is experimental. But later on he realized the limitations of experimentalism. So in a course correction he wrote “Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda� which is progressive. Manik says:
“It is true that love is conditioned by economic factors; but that love is another name for economic dependence is, a travesty of the truth, for, though it can not be denied love touches the strings of beauty deep down in the recesses of soul and wakens them to music, it fills us with a sense of grace, light and moral upliftment.�
Something about the style of writing. It is very unique, ingenious, surreal, and original. Nowhere you will see such a lyrical writing style in prose which alternates seamlessly between present and past; real and imaginary; dreams and life. In fact Manik says about style of narration:
“Oh technique! Emphasis on technique is merely a sign of immature, the experimenter, the man who has not yet mastered his medium�.
This book brings out the trial and tribulations of Hindu middle class which is grappling with the problems of caste, creed, conventions, financial constraints, unmatched marriages, unfulfilled desires, weak position of women in Indian society etc.
Although the novel ends on a positive note. As per Hindu mythology the Sun god is travelling in the sky in a chariot pulled by seven horses. The seventh horse is the horse of dreams, aspirations and future. In the end it is shown that other six horses are injured and the seventh horse takes the sun into a hopeful future.
In fact Manik Mulla thus emphasizes this point in the end of novel:
"The Love which cannot contribute to social progress and individual development, is not love"......

Legend has it that this could be interpreted in many ways:
1. The seven horses of the Sun corresponds to VIBGYOR with each of the color of rainbow depicted as one horse. I guess this is not the context here, as the title focuses on the 7th one alone.
2. According to Hindu mythology, one of the horses pulling the Sun god's chariot is weak which always remains a bit behind the other horses of the same chariot.
3. Alternately in Hindu mythology itself, the seventh and smallest horse guides us towards the future.
Coming back to the book. The protagonist Manik Mulla narrates stories to his bachelor friends every afternoon. The tales are semi-biographical recounting his love interest with three different girls at different times.
All stories are from different economic backgrounds - rich, poor and middle class. There are symbolic references detailed in the book on Marxism, Communalism and how each love story contributes to progressing the society.
Initially it looked like a collection of short stories, but there is more than meets the eye.
Experimental narration and written much ahead of its time, it’s a must read for Hindi lit fans.

काफी हद तक 'गुनाहो� का देवत�' और 'सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़�' मे� समानता है� गुनाहो� का देवत� का चंदर सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़� मे� माणि� है, सुधा लिली है, पम्मी सत्ती है, और बिनती जमुन� है� कथान� उतना अच्छ� नही� बन पाया जितन� अच्छ� गुनाहो� का देवत� मे था�

'Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda' by Dharmvir Bharti is a phenomenal novel which falls in genere of Meta-Fiction . The story follows meeting of some friends in seven consequent afternoons . Some friends get together on a friend's place and hears the stories told by Manik Mulla , who is considered as the most mature among them . He tells them the stories of women who came in his life at different points of time .
Simple enough ?
No , these are not simple love stories which we hear , read or watch . These stories are the astonishing outcome of Manik Mulla's (or can be said author's observation of the society) . Every story shows a different social background and the norms and problems even evils related to them . The stories are are told with some great metaphors (like in a dream sequence served legs are used as a metaphor for not taking stand against wrongs of society) .
What fascinated me most in the novel is the character of Manik Mulla . It is the most surreal yet addicting character I have ever read . For instance his name his name - 'Manik Mulla' , Manik : a Hindi name and 'Mulla' : stands for a learned person in Urdu . The name I think is a metaphor which represents collective Indian society irrespective of religion . More than 'Who is Manik Mulla?' , I found a more important question 'What is Manik Mulla?'
Is he a lover , an observer , a dreamer or a storyteller ? I think Manik Mulla is an outcome when author mixed observations , dreams , experiences and (a bit of) reality .Why he keeps a horseshoe , a poster 'Khao aur shareer banao' (eat and stay healthy) , and a knife ? Are these things sovereign of those incomplete love stories or Mulla just inspires from these objects and weaves stories around them based on his observations ? (he himself says that he , like Anton Chekhov , can create stories from any object given to him). The place where he stays is a metaphor of his inner realm , the realm from where he gets the stories .
The stories which are outcome of Manik's experience , observations , reality and fiction almost fades the lines of facts and fictions and on the other hand are wonderful social commentaries and makes the book a cult classic .
A MUST MUST READ .

One Of The Greatest Reading Experience Ever .

I finally got around to reading this classic which I have been wanting to for decades...and am so glad that I did it! For someone who is used to reading mainstream English literature with its paint-by-numbers structure, this book was both a challenge and a discovery! Not because of the language. In fact, the use of simple, colloquial Hindi was a pleasant surprise.
The challenging part was the way the story was structured -- as mini-narratives -- and yet told from the Point of View of a third-person narrator (who represents the Protagonist). While love in one form or the other is at the heart of these stories, these are not your regular love stories. Each of the three stories deals with the lives of three women - Jamuna, Leela and Satti - whom the Protagonist (Mulla Manik) has been in love with at different points in his life. The three women are also connected with each other though they don't have any interactions between themselves.
The way the stories are narrated is particularly fascinating because it exposes several layers and themes - and ties together with the central theme that 'love which doesn't lead to individual and societal upliftment is meaningless'. However such love is aspirational and in my understanding, is the kind that eludes all the principal characters of the story. It is symbolically represented by the sole survivor of the seven horses (the reference to the Sun Chariot's Seventh Horse in the title) that continues to tread the path towards a glorious future in the hope that future generations will be able to shed their shackles of poverty, societal norms and underdevelopment, through experiencing such uplifting love!

The Seventh Steed of the Sun
The stories are set in a typical lower middle class society of an Indian village. Daily struggles of people with poverty and societal norms with its roots in a worldly struggles of capitalism vs socialism. The stories are as colloquial as you would have heard in your society or community. Girl likes neighbour boy, big dowry demands, parental pressure, young girl married to rich old man, million rituals for bearing son as a hire � even now if you open a newspaper these themes will be underlying the news. So what makes this book special�
Very rarely we come across a book which has strong social message imbibed in human drama. A strong narrator and a very keen audience can bring such depth to a story that it turns into a classic. Most of you would have heard of it as a film by Shyam Benegal. I had been wanting to read this book since I saw the film about 15 years back. And nothing can beat the power of the book, the language, the story telling technique, the characters, the title, the humour, the plot, are all makings of a masterpiece. Dharamvir Bharati is definitely an author who gives Hindi literature a proud name. You can feel that the Hindi language is giving more power to the story and the characters.

इस उपन्या� मे� निष्कर्षवादी कहानियाँ दी गई है� � निष्कर्षवादी कहानियाँ क्या होती है�, यह उपन्या� के प्रमुख पात्� माणि� मुल्ला ने समझाया है कि किसी कहानी को लिखन� के पहले उसका निष्कर्ष मन मे� सो� लो � फि� पात्रो� पर इतना अनुशाष� होना चाहि� कि कहानी को उस सोचे हु� अं� की तर� ले जाया जा सके। उपन्या� मे� प्रस्तुत कहानियों मे� जब अं� मे� निष्कर्ष पर चर्च� हु� है तो कई बा� निष्कर्ष अत्यंत बनावटी लग� और ऐस� भी लग� कि कहानियों की बौद्धि� गहरा� और साहित्यि� सुंदरत� उन निष्कर्षों से हल्की हो चली है लेकि� शायद माणि� मुल्ला के पात्� को विकसित करने के लि� ऐस� आवश्यक रह� हो �
माणि� मुल्ला के माध्यम से भारती जी ने प्रे� मे� यथार्थवा� पर बल दिया है � माणि� मुल्ला कहते है� कि प्रे� आर्थिक परिस्थितियों से अनुशाषित होता है और आंशि� रू� से यह कह� जा सकता है कि प्रे� आर्थिक निर्भरता का ही दूसर� ना� है� हालाँक� बा� मे� माणि� मुल्ला ने इस पर सफाई भी दी -

কিন্তু তা সত্বেও, জীবন� এই একটা� বই আম� হিন্দিতে পড়েছি� সেটা নিয়� একটা গল্প আছে। আমার পরিচিত এক লেখকপ্রবরে� কাছে আম� একবা� অনুবাদিত হিন্দি সাহিত্যে� রেকো চেয়েছিলাম - তিনি প্রস্তাব দে� ধর্মবী� ভারতী� Chander and Sudha পড়ত� (যেটা হিন্দিতে 'গুনাহো� কা দেবত�' নামে প্রকাশিত) . সেটাকে ইংরেজিতে পড়ে আমার যারপরনাই ভালো লেগেছিলো (সেটা�'� রেকো রইলো, পর� কখনও সেটা�'� রিভি� লিখব�'খন), আর তা� কল্যান� এই লেখকের আর� কিছু লেখা পড়া� ইচ্ছ� জাগে� মুশকিল এই হল�, যে ধর্মবী� ভারতী� অন্য কোনো লেখা বোধহয় ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ হয়নি।
অধ্যয়নশী� বিচক্ষ� সিরিয়াস পাঠক না হলেও, আম� লড়াকু পড়ুয়া। যখ� শুনি যে ধর্মবী� ভারতী� সেরা লেখা 'সূরজ কা সাতওয়াঁ ঘোড়�' (সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব) নেহা�'� �-দেড়েক পাতা� বই, আম� কোমর বেঁধ� হিন্দিতে� সেটা পড়া� সিদ্ধান্� নিই।
মানি� মোল্লা হলেন � গল্পের সূত্রধরে� বন্ধুবৃত্তের মধ্যমণ� � চীনাবাদা� আর তরমু� সহকারে ��ন্ধুদে� সঙ্গ� আড্ডার তিনি� লোকা� সেলিব্রিটি� দর্শ�, প্রে�, রাজনীতি, সাহিত্� - যে আড্ডাই হো� না কে�, মানি� মোল্লা তাঁর গল্পের ঝাঁপ� খুলে ধরেন তাঁর গুনগ্রাহী বন্ধুদের কাছে � এরকম'� কয়েকট� আড্ডায� তিনি তাঁর বন্ধুদের তাঁর জীবনের তিনট� গল্প শোনান। প্রেমে� গল্প - প্রে� তো অবশ্যই, অপূর্ণ প্রেমে� গল্প� সে� তিনট� গল্প, আর তা� উপলব্ধ� নিয়েই এই বই� এই তি� গল্পের তি� প্রধান নারীকে� মানি� এক এক সময়� ভালোবেসেছিলে�, আর এই তিনটের একটা� পূর্ণত� পায় নি�
প্রথ� গল্পটি হল� যমুনার - মধ্যবিত্� ঘরের, ঘরোয়া কিন্তু বে� স্বাধী� স্বভাবের একটি মেয়ে। পাশে� বাড়ির সমবয়সী তান্না� সঙ্গ� প্রে� - যেটি পরিণয়ের পরিণতি পায় না তান্না� কাপুরুষতার জন্য�, আর যমুনার বিবা� হয়ে যায় তা� চেয়� অনেক বেশি বয়সী একজনের সাথে�
পরের গল্পের প্রধান চরিত্র হলেন লিলি, ধনী উচ্চসমাজের ইন্টেলেক্চুয়া� মেয়ে। মানিকে� সঙ্গ� তা� একটা সম্পর্� গড়ে ওঠ�, কিন্তু তা� বিয়� হয� উপরোক্� তান্না� সাথে - তান্না নিজে ভালো ছেলে, কিন্তু ভীরু, তা� বাবা দোর্দণ্ডপ্রতাপ মহেশ্বররের ভয়ে সে তটস্থ। যে� শীর্ষেন্দু� গল্প থেকে তুলে আন� এক হেরো লোক। বলাই বাহুল্�, তান্না লিলি� সমকক্ষ নয� - শারীরি� মানসিক বা বুদ্ধিগতভাবে কোনোভাবে� সে লিলিকে সন্তুষ্ট করতে পারে না�
আর পরের গল্পের নায়িক� সতী - গরিব নিচু সমাজের এক মেয়� - যা� সঙ্গেও মানিকে� প্রে� অপূর্ণ থেকে যায়� এইটা হয়ত� গল্পের সবচেয়� গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অধ্যায়। গল্পের শেষট� হয� চাঞ্চল্যকর ভাবে ... অনেক কট� প্রশ্ন আমাদের কাছে ছেড়� দিয়ে।
ধর্মবী� ভারতী উত্ত� ভারতীয় সমাজব্যবস্থাকে খু� ভেতর থেকে জেনেছিলে� বুঝেছিলে� - আর এই বইটা সে� সমাজের'� উপাখ্যান� সুন্দর লেখা, যদিও হয়ত� সে� লেখা� এব� ভাষা� আদর্� সমঝদার আম� নই - কোনো কোনো অং� বুঝত� একটু অসুবিধ� হয� বই কী� অনেক জায়গায় ভাষা� তাৎপর্� ধরতে না পারলেও, লেখক যে আম্বিয়ান্� তৈরী করেছেন, সেটা উপলব্ধ� করতে পারি - আর লেখক অসাধার� সী� লেখেন।
আর একটা ব্যাপারও বলতে হয� - বিখ্যা� সিনেমা পরিচাল� শ্যা� বেনেগা� চমৎকার একটা হিন্দি সিনেমা করেছিলেন এই বইটা নিয়� - বইটা পড়া শে� করেই সিনেমাটা দেখি - আর তা� দেখে যে দুএকটা জায়গায় প্রশ্ন ছি�, সেগুলো� উত্ত� পেয়� যা� - কিন্তু এটাও জানি যে বইটা না পড়ে শুধু সিনেমাটা দেখল� অনেকগুলো আধ্যাত্মিক ব্যাপা� ধরতে পেতা� না�
পুনশ্চ : বইয়ের নামট� সুন্দর - সূরজ কা সাতওয়াঁ ঘোড়�' , অর্থাৎ সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব� এটার মানেটা মানি� মোল্লা� এক জায়গায় বুঝিয়� দে� - সূর্যদেবের রথকে টেনে নিয়� যায় সাতট� ঘোড়া। তাদে� মধ্য� ছট� ঘোড়� প্রথমে দৌড়োয� - তাদে� গতিপ� স্থির। সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব বাকি সবার সামান্� একটু পেছন� দৌড়োয�, কিন্তু তা� নিজে� ক্ষমতা হল� যে তা� লক্ষ্যপথ সে বদলে দিতে পারে� এই ঘোড়াট� হল� মানুষে� স্বাধী� চিন্তাধারা এব� তা� উচ্চাকাঙ্খা। তাহল� � গল্পের সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব কোথায়? সে কি একান্ত� আছ� � গল্প�? সেটা� এই গল্পের মূ� প্রশ্ন - এব� এই প্রশ্নের উত্ত�'� হয়ত� গল্পের আকস্মি� শে� আখ্যান� খোঁজার চেষ্টা হয়।

আর একটা ব্যাপারও বলতে হয� - বিখ্যা� সিনেমা পরিচাল� শ্যা� বেনেগা� চমৎকার একটা হিন্দি সিনেমা করেছিলেন এই বইটা নিয়� - বইটা পড়া শে� করেই সিনেমাটা দেখি - আর তা� দেখে যে দুএকটা জায়গায় প্রশ্ন ছি�, সেগুলো� উত্ত� পেয়� যা� - কিন্তু এটাও জানি যে বইটা না পড়ে শুধু সিনেমাটা দেখল� অনেকগুলো আধ্যাত্মিক ব্যাপা� ধরতে পেতা� না�
পুনশ্চ : বইয়ের নামট� সুন্দর - সূরজ কা সাতওয়াঁ ঘোড়�' , অর্থাৎ সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব� এটার মানেটা মানি� মোল্লা� এক জায়গায় বুঝিয়� দে� - সূর্যদেবের রথকে টেনে নিয়� যায় সাতট� ঘোড়া। তাদে� মধ্য� ছট� ঘোড়� প্রথমে দৌড়োয� - তাদে� গতিপ� স্থির। সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব বাকি সবার সামান্� একটু পেছন� দৌড়োয�, কিন্তু তা� নিজে� ক্ষমতা হল� যে তা� লক্ষ্যপথ সে বদলে দিতে পারে� এই ঘোড়াট� হল� মানুষে� স্বাধী� চিন্তাধারা এব� তা� উচ্চাকাঙ্খা। তাহল� � গল্পের সূর্যরথে� সপ্ত� অশ্ব কোথায়? সে কি একান্ত� আছ� � গল্প�? সেটা� এই গল্পের মূ� প্রশ্ন - এব� এই প্রশ্নের উত্ত�'� হয়ত� গল্পের আকস্মি� শে� আখ্যান� খোঁজার চেষ্টা হয়।
সে রহস্� নিয়� আলোচনা আমরা DM � করবো নাহয� কোনোদিন। যদ� অবকা� হয�, পড়ে ফেলু� বইটা - সে আলোচনা� জন্য� আমিও উদগ্রীব।

“Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda� literally means “The seventh horse pulling the chariot of the sun.� One of the books of which I first saw the movie and then read the book. Movie by Shyam Benegal is brilliant so is Manik Mull played by Rajat Kapoor. Usually in case of movie adaptations of literature one or the other is disappointing. But in this rare case both are brilliant.
The novel is in narration style where Manik Mulla (name is very suggestive Hindu and Muslim both) tells story of failed romances of three women, to his friends on seven lazy summer afternoons. There are three heroines Jamuna (a simple middle class homely girl), Leela or Lily (the intellectual, independent, strong, feminist) and Satti (a feisty lower class woman). All three were in love in Manik Mulla at different point of times. Jamuna couldn’t marry her lover Tanna, because he is a coward and subsequently married off to an old man who dies. Widow Jamuna finds solace and happiness in extramarital relationship with a tongewala. Leela is married to Tanna, the coward lover of Jamuna and is dissatisfied because he is not strong and intellectual enough to be her husband. The third Satti love Manik mulla but she is raped and murdered by Mahesar Dayal, evil father of Tanna. This novel looks at the disappointments faced by these women when it comes to love and how they cope up with their lives.
Dharamveer Bharti initially was in Prayogawadi (experimentalism) camp. This was a movement in Hindi literature called Prayogawad (led by Vatsayan agayeya) which concentrated on human misery, depression, aloofness, loneliness, helplessness and total cut off from society. Influenced by Kafka, Freud and all which concentrated mainly on psychological aspect of humans and ignored social completely. Its opposite was Pragatiwad (Progressivism) influenced by Marxist, Leninist philosophy and promoted socialism.
His earlier novel “Gunaho ka Dewta� (another classic) is experimental. But later on he realized the limitations of experimentalism. So in a course correction he wrote “Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda� which is progressive. Manik says:
“It is true that love is conditioned by economic factors; but that love is another name for economic dependence is, a travesty of the truth, for, though it can not be denied love touches the strings of beauty deep down in the recesses of soul and wakens them to music, it fills us with a sense of grace, light and moral upliftment.�
Something about the style of writing. It is very unique, ingenious, surreal, and original. Nowhere you will see such a lyrical writing style in prose which alternates seamlessly between present and past; real and imaginary; dreams and life. In fact Manik says about style of narration:
“Oh technique! Emphasis on technique is merely a sign of immature, the experimenter, the man who has not yet mastered his medium�.
This book brings out the trial and tribulations of Hindu middle class which is grappling with the problems of caste, creed, conventions, financial constraints, unmatched marriages, unfulfilled desires, weak position of women in Indian society etc.
Although the novel ends on a positive note. As per Hindu mythology the Sun god is travelling in the sky in a chariot pulled by seven horses. The seventh horse is the horse of dreams, aspirations and future. In the end it is shown that other six horses are injured and the seventh horse takes the sun into a hopeful future.
In fact Manik Mulla thus emphasizes this point in the end of novel:
"The Love which cannot contribute to social progress and individual development, is not love"......

गुनाहो� के देवत� के बा� सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़� धर्मवी� भारती का दूसर� उपन्या� है।अज्ञे� ने उपन्या� की भूमिका मे� भारती जी के बारे कह� है कि-“उनक� पा� जीनियस वाले सारे गु� विद्यमान है ।उसक� सा� एक चीज़ और है जो प्रतिभ� के सा� ज़रूरी तौ� पर नही� आती वो है हास्य।”जितनी प्रसिद्ध� इस लघ� उपन्या� को मिली है उनती ही सराहना इस उपन्या� के ऊप�, १९९२ मे� श्या� बेनेगल द्वारा बनायी गई फ़िल्म, को भी मिली है जिसक� राष्ट्री� फ़िल्म पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।
यह उपन्या� � छोटी कहानियों मे� बट� हु� है , जो इसके केंद्री� पात्� माणि� मुल्ला द्वारा अपने दोस्तो� को सुना� जाती है ।सुनाई गई कहानियाँ निम्� मध्यर्वर्गी� पात्राओं जमुन�, लिली और सत्ती की प्रे� कहानियों को दर्शाती है � हर पात्रा का रह�-सह�, स्वभाव और आर्थिक स्थिती एक दूसर� से एकदम भिन्� है परंत� सभी की कहानियों का अं� एक जैसा है � पात्राओं की महत्वाकांक्षी इच्छाए� उड़ा� तो भरना चाहती है लेकि� आर्थिक संघर्ष, सामाजि� एव� नैति� बंधनों मे� फँ� कर दम तोड़ देती है �
यह एक कहानी मे� अनेक कहानी नही� बल्क� अनेक कहानियों मे� एक है � हर कहानी एक दूसर� से जुड़ी हु� है और हर कहानी को एक सूत्� मे� बांधने वाले है माणि� मुल्ला, जो स्वय� हर कहानी मे� उपस्थि� है�
भारती जी द्वारा दिये गय� अपने निवेदन मे� ही उन्होंने इसको एक “प्रायोगात्मक� लघ�-उपन्या� घोषि� कर दिया है � कहानियां बहुत ही सर�, सीधी होते हु� भी बड़ी ही चतुराई से गठित की गई है� इनमे� अलफ़लैला या पंचतंत्र वाला ढं� मिलेगा , जिसमें हर कहानी निष्कर्षवादी होती है� हालाँक� इस उपन्या� मे� यह कह� कि कहानी का निष्कर्ष पहले से ही सो� लिया गय� है और पात्रो� की कहानी को ऐस� मोड़� गय� है कि सुनिश्चि� निष्कर्ष पे पहुंचा जा सक� �
कहानियों मे� जि� गहरा� से समाज के ढाँच� की आलोचना की है, उसका निष्कर्ष पाठकों को उतना ही हल्क� और हास्यास्पद लगेग� ।शाय� भारती जी की इसी लेखा शैली की तारीफ़ अज्ञेय ने शुरुआत मे� की है �

Dharmveer Bharti ji is a genius. Period.
I got introduced to him much later in life and just few months back read Gunaahon ka Devta and it made me realise how it was said about him that ‘till the time he is alive, Hindi literature is safe�.
While Gunahon ka Devta was a full fledged novel and Bhartiji had full length of novel to display his prowess, this book, despite being 80 pager, punches hole in soul as very few books can. That’s the power of literature and the beauty of gifted writing. It is because of such literature that readers like me stay captivated with this magical world of books.
This book is more of an experimental collection of stories, all conjoined at hips, narrated by Manik Mulla. The stories are interwoven and how! The intricacies are so exquisite that Shyam Benegal ji had to make a movie on it. Beautiful.
In my opinion, anyone who can read Hindi, should read this book because after this, a very strong filter will get developed for farce and substandard writing.

This is a string of seven symbolic stories within one larger narrative, presented as a laghu upanyas (novella).
Apart from a strong subject matter, the 'Neti Neti' (neither this, nor that) format is a masterstroke by Dharamveer Bharati. It stimulates you to explore the reality from 'what's not'.
These stories will disillusion the reader from the hyper-romanticised concept of love & bring to the foreground the understated and generally ignored power of socio-economic realities that dictate our lives & actions.
Reminded me strongly of 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell.

January 1, 2025This novella by Dharamveer Bharati is strange. It is a set of three stories told over seven days by the storyteller Manik Mulla who also features in them. The lives of the characters in the stories are intertwined in unexpected ways, and each tale offers a promise of being a tale of love between a man and woman.
However, at the end narrator states clearly that the stories are not about love, but what love is not. "यह प्रे� नही� था, यह भी प्रे� नही� था, यह भी प्रे� नही� था". The book, in fact is not about love at all, but the ways in which social and economic order of the society shapes love between two people.
In other words, the ways in which something as personal as love is not left untouched by the socio-economic organisation of a society and how it has life changing consequences for all characters involved, except for the storyteller Manik Mulla who symbolises the middle class man in the book. Bharati was a Marxist and through these narrations he makes a commentary on the corrupted lives of the middle class.
It's a fascinating experiment of a book that offers both the story and its analysis, leaving very little for the reader to interpret in terms of the theme or the message. And yet the reader is left to decide on the character of the storyteller.
The tales left me feeling heartbroken, pained and angry. However, the narrator ends it on a hopeful note. The seventh horse of the sun is the horse that represents the future, it is the horse of hope. I don't know how to make sense of it yet.

किस्सागो है� माणि� मुल्ला जो अपने जीवन से जुड़ी कु� कहानियाँ अपने मित्रो� को सुना रह� है�.. और जैसे जैसे कहानियाँ आग� बढ़ती है�, हमें एहसा� होता है कि सब एक दूसर� से जुड़ी हु� है�; सभी छोटी कहानियाँ एक बड़े कथान� का हिस्सा है, जिसमें प्रे� है, विरह है, संवेदन� है, दिखावा है, और चूँक� माणि� निष्कर्षवा� मे� विश्वा� रखते है� तो सभी कहानियों का एक निष्कर्ष भी है जिसमें व्यंग्� और मार्क्सवाद का अद्भुत पु� है..
हिंदी साहित्� के चिरकाश मे� इस किता� का क्या स्था� है ये शायद मुझे बतान� की को� आवश्यकता नही� है.. साहित्� प्रेमियो� के लि� ये किता� और फिल्� प्रेमियो� के लि� इसी ना� से बनी श्या� बेनेगल की फिल्� पारस पत्थ� की तर� है..

ये तो सत्य है कि इस उपन्या� कि तर� आज भी हमार� समाज मे� ऐसी ही कई अस� कहानियां हैं। जो भी लिखा है वो सब सत्य प्रती� होता है � यह उपन्या� पढ़क� मेरा मन परेशान सा हो गय� है� सबसे ज्यादा दु� पत� नही� क्यो� माणि� मुल्ला के लि� होता है� उसने इन सबमे� अपनी कथ� सुना दी और अपना व्याकु� सा चित्� लेकर कही� भीड़ मे� खो गय� है� हर एक व्यक्त� मे� एक माणि� मुल्ला हैं। जो खु� भी दुखी है� और हर किसी के दु� मे� सहभागी है� जमुन�, तन्न�, लीली, सत्ती से लेकर हर एक व्यक्त� की कथ� ने दु� दिया परंत� सबसे ज्यादा दु� माणि� मुल्ला की कथ� मे� और आज मै� उस माणि� को अपने अंदर दे� पा रही हूं।

My sister had this novella in her syllabus in Grad school. And I always wanted to read it but couldn't get to because of my own burden of studies.
But I had watched the movie and I didn't know that there's a movie based on this novella and I loved the movie, okay!
Now that I have read the book now because I love reading than watching, Jesus Christ! I loved it, I drank it sip by sip. And I am so glad to see the characters so closely. But I felt sad for Satti and the behaviour of Manik Mulla towards her.

Now that I have read the book now because I love reading than watching, Jesus Christ! I loved it, I drank it sip by sip. And I am so glad to see the characters so closely. But I felt sad for Satti and the behaviour of Manik Mulla towards her.

This is a collection of different intermingled stories . The story revolves around the concept of love and what it really is? The story has taken up the socioeconomic issues and conditions and how it affects the human decisions.
The story has much deeper philosophical contonation pertaining to the idea of love and necessity of it.

सूरज का सातवां घोड़� - एक अनूठ� प्रकार का लघ� उपन्या� है� इसमे� माणि� मुल्ला अपने जीवन के विभिन्� पड़ा� मे� ती� युवतियों से आकर्षि� हु� क्रमशः - जमुन�, लिली और अं� मे� सत्ती� तीनो� अल� प्रकार की व्यक्तित्व� बहुत ही सुंद� ढं� से लेखक ने तीनो� को आप� मे� जोड़� है लेकि� तीनो� का एक दूसर� से को� सीधा संपर्क नहीं।

A great book in Hindi. I had seen a movie based on this book in 80s. Finally read the book and it was better than the movie. Book is little more difficult to follow if you are not good with Hindi. Overall a good read.
