Edited for my reread today:

Crazy Sexy Juice.

That is some title huh?

It works. In fact, it works so well that this is a re-read for me. I first read the book in 2021. I read it, tabbed pages, and gave it a five-star review. I have made, and enjoyed, several recipes within since then.

Flash forward to March 2025 and I have made a few more of the recipes and have enjoyed the re-read of all the vital information within.

Kris points out the difference in pricing between a Happy Meal and a bag of broccoli. The prices in 2015 (when the book was written) were ridiculous. Even more so today. I just purchased a bag of grapes (Organic) for a recipe within. $15 for the bag. Yep. $15. But we are juicing one day a week 3x a day without eating our normal food. So, I suppose it evens out in the end? Regardless you cannot put a price on health. I would rather have $15 worth of grapes then a $40 co-pay at a doctor’s office.

One very important and true statement is found on page 18: “I’m pretty certain that if we could all taste vegetables that were prepared well, we’d fall deeply-madly in love with them.. SO TRUE KRIS, SO TRUE!

Another fabulous quote: “Overall, our goal is to make more energy deposits than withdrawals.
Before the recipes even start there is so much useful, necessary, needed information. From the different types of juicers available. The difference between juicing and smoothie making. Best way to store your produce. How to properly wash and clean it. The next section is broken down by individual fruits or veggies. The information provided tells you how to select the item(s), how to store, how to prepare, the top nutrients/health benefits, etc. Good stuff. There is a huge section on “Extras such as nuts, chia seeds, spices, etc. etc. I LOVE the Substitutions section. The frequently asked questions section is sweet. Kris answers the age-old question can I just buy the juice from your supermarket? (The answer is the pasteurization that gives the juice its long shelf life depletes some of the benefits. Yikes).

One of my FAVORITE parts are recipes using the juice pulp. I have a great deal sitting in my freezer at the moment. So, I made three batches of the Juice Pulp Burgers. We ate some and froze most. SO GOOD!!!!!!! I cannot wait to make the Juice Pulp Crackers.

Then we have the Juice recipes. I am looking forward to trying the Classic Green Lemonade. Kris refers to it as the Cadillac of juicing recipes. (Although I would prefer the Pink VW Convertible Beetle, circa 1970 of juicing recipes).

Although not totally necessary for juices there are some glorious pictures. I LOVE great pictures in a cookbook.

The Sweet and Sour Green was grape I mean great. Loved this one.

The Root Power recipe looks great. Red will be a nice change over all the greenies I’ve been making. The {Vitamin} C-Bomb is also a gorgeous color (pinky red). I LOVE the picture for this one.
The picture for Tummy Tamer is stunning. Looks like it belongs in a backyard Wedding Shower Tea. Gorgeous!

Skin Sweetie was fun to make. I loved throwing all those blueberries into the juicer. Good times at my house.

By the way. All the recipes tell you what they do. Example: kickstart your day, anti-aging for skin, fatigue fighter (which I LOVED), etc.

Let us move onto Smoothies, shall we? Great way to “Sneak in veggies for your non-veggie loving friends. They will never know. Except for the one with cilantro. I’ll know. And I’ll not drink it. I abhor cilantro. It is up there with paying taxes for me. Yuck. But the Granny Smith Apple Pie Smoothie? Yes please!!! Can you guess which veggie is in the Popeye? I bet you can. This one sounds great!!! There is one with oats, almond butter, banana, etc. that sounds divine! Kris had me at Salted Almond Shake (no veggies in this one). Sounds incredible! I’ll definitely be making the Mint Chip Champion on March 17th St. Patrick’s Day. And I WILL NOT wait for December for the Egg Nog smoothie! No way Jose.

I’ve made the Cashew Chai Milk recipe, from the Milk section, countless times. We love it!
There is also a Three-Day Cleanse section which I think I’m ready to try! Also, yes Kris, I agree fasting makes me want to eat a sofa cushion slathered in butter too!!!

The book closes with a handful of food recipes. All plant based. But no wacky ingredients. Just real food. The Zucchini Hemp Hummus looks great. Chickpeas still get their moment to shine however! Just wait till you see the Tamari Roasted Chickpeas! Yup Yup.

GREAT BOOK!!!

My original review from 2021:Fabulous cookbook. Great information and recipes. My fave is Chai Cashew Milk. I've made it several times a week since February 1st.

Kris Carr first came to my attention when I watched Crazy Sexy Cancer, a documentary that showed her type 4 cancer diagnosis and the changes she made to live a healthy happy life. I found it highly motivational and if you haven't seen it, I urge you to do so.
I must be honest, I didn't so much pick this book for smoothie recipes, my blender is on the fritz and I'm very much a "blend what's in the fridge" type of gal anyway. I wanted something that would motivate me to get my (slightly too big) rear in gear and Carr always manages to do so.

Whenever I pick up a vegan/vegetarian book I judge it based on a few factors:

- can I buy the ingredients in my local supermarket and not have to sell a kidney to afford them
- do I need special equipment or utensils that will clutter my kitchen space
- is it relatively low fat/ decent in calories (vegetarian does NOT equal slim)
- are the recipes tasty and easy to make

All that is required for smoothies is a good blender, you can use fruit and vegetables from your local shop, most consist of fruit and vegetables only and are super easy to make.
I especially found the homemade non dairy milk ( I refuse to call it nut milk!) section interesting and I can't wait to try them out.
On the whole, there's nothing especially revolutionary about this book but it provides a good boost to the ol' motivation, it can inspire you to think outside the box when on your weekly shopping trip and try new ingredients or food combinations.

Overall Crazy Sexy Juice is a beautiful book with gorgeous photos and a nice layout. However, the juices and smoothies themselves are not terribly new if you have been around the vegan or healthy food community for very long. The juices especially are quite common, though there were a few gems in there (such as Crimson Dawn). Unfortunately Carr relies heavily on cucumber as a base in her juices, which I personally cannot drink. This is easily remedied but I do wish she had more variety in bases.

The smoothies, again, are common combinations found in the health food and vegan community, though Carr's measurements are her own at times. My favorites were the Body Builder, For the Love of Nog, Strawberry Fields and Chocolate Avocado.

Disclosure: ARC received from Netgalley & publisher in exchange for an honest review. (They may regret this.) Any and all quotes were taken from an advanced edition subject to change in the final edition.

A pity. I use to find something vaguely approachable about in the early days of her 'healthy person' career, but this book is a bit of a waste. Pretty much everything she says is available in her early books (or films, or, indeed, ANY book about juicing) and this makes me suspect that this volume was published with less than pure motives. The photos are pretty, and if you know nothing about anything, I guess maybe you'd get something out of this. Otherwise, give this one a miss.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for making an early-release copy available to me.

I checked this out from my library and have already added it to my "wish list" to buy. There's a lot of great information in the first half of the book about nutrients, how our bodies process things, what fruits and veggies give you what, and so on. That alone made it worth it to me. Maybe you can find this information on her website, but I like having it all in one place. The recipes were good for ideas on what to add to my current smoothie rotation, although I probably won't follow them exactly. Something to check out, if you don't already know much about this kind of thing.

It was a fateful Saturday night. I was arriving at the apartment of Tim Harrold, an avid nut milk maker. Tim and I decided that we were going to make a nut milk, but the possibilities were endless. After hours of debate, (and realizing that Tim only had cashews and hazelnuts) we decided on making a cashew and hazelnut milk. The plan was perfect. We fetched the strongest of blenders. Mankind has never seen a blender this strong before. We tossed the cashews and hazelnuts into the blender and blended them until they were finely ground. We put the nut powder into a straining bag and started to milk the nuts. I find it funny that nut milk resembles milk in such a variety of ways. It's white, it tastes roughly like milk, and even the process of making the milk is similar to that of milking a cow. After we finished milking the nuts we decided to get a little freaky. We added vanilla extract and cinnamon, just for a little X factor.

We poured our nutty concoction into some cups, and tried the result of all of our hard work. The taste was distinctly nutty, even moreso than most nut milks. The hazelnut and cinnamon went very well with eachother, and the vanilla extract provided just a little bit of sweetness. After some initial tastes, we decided that it was missing one thing -- nutmeg. The put nutmeg in. The results were astounding. It tasted just like the previous drink, but with a little bit of nutmeg. Life changing. Previously, the nut flavor was more of an aftertaste, but the nutmeg provided a distinct immediate nut flavor. It was even nuttier than before.

Tim and I are no tasting amateurs. In between drinks we cleansed our palates using some ginger. The sign of professionals at work. After some enjoyment of our creation, we decided that it was time to pull out our secret weapon. Canada's pride and joy. Maple syrup. One flaw with our nut milk was that it had the same viscosity as water. We theorized was that the maple syrup would act as a thickener, while also providing some needed sweetness. Despite our greatest efforts, the maple syrup only ended up making the milk sweeter, and did not increase the viscosity. A witness on the scene, Antonio Alonso, gave a response after being asked what he thought of the milk. "I thought nut milk was supposed to be thicker". Despite the complaints from the crowd, the result was still pleasant, and we felt that this was a great final iteration of the drink.

In conclusion, the milk was pretty damn good, and we had a fun time adding different ingredients as we went. That is all. Goodbye.

A wonderful and educational resource for living a healthier lifestyle!

Chockful of easy-to-follow recipes (and beautiful, illustrative photos) for juicing your way to better health! The recipes are divided into helpful categories, such as : Superfoods, Immunity Boosters, Energizers, etc. Plus, this book is filled with great information about in what ways various ingredients provide healthful benefits. I found the section on various nut and seed "milks" that the author included to be a great bonus.

My only criticism is the frequency of cucumbers as a recommended ingredient (a particular food I have a strong dislike for), without Ms. Carr suggesting another ingredient that could be effectively substituted for it. (The author does include recommendations of substitutions for other ingredients that are not frequently cited in the various recipes included in this, otherwise, fantastic book.

I'm a big fan of juicing, and I really admire Kris and how she's handled her journey with cancer.

Although I agree that much of what's in this book can be found elsewhere, I really like the way she pulls the information together.

Her approach to juicing and her creativity with recipes is inspiring and I find myself being willing to put up with the "clean up" to try out some of her recipes.

I've also started making nut milks, which is a whole other world of plant-based liquids, and found a really cool (low-cost) way to of my milks, using a piece of swiss voile, which I definitely prefer.

Overall, this is a book worth reading, and if you even get one recipe out of this that you enjoy, then you're one step closer to being healthier!

A beautifully presented and illustrated book on juicing and blending with lots of helpful information on how to balance your fruit and veg, the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load, how to adjust the sugar content of your recipes, how to prep your kitchen and much more besides. The recipes are easy to follow and Kris provides you with a helpful list of alternative ingredients when some of the fresh ingredients are out of season or not easily available. I found the depth of this book very appealing and the recipes safe to use with guidance on how to balance the carbohydrate and sugar intake. The recipes are a great starting point from where you can create your own variations and creations too.

I’m glad I read this book

Before I even finished this book, I was already trying the smoothies. I’ve been enjoying the smoothies now for two weeks and I found them to be good. Listen to what the author has to say, when choosing blenders, and how to clean them. I had one after 10 years burned out, and I had to buy a new one. Lots of good information here. Really good recipes.

These juices are versatile and easy! Miss Carr also includes a few recipes. My kids LOVE the herbed lentil recipe. It can be altered to become a welcome addition to salads, soups, and taco filling as well. Miss Carr's books are consistently hilarious, easy to navigate, and extremely informative.

Crazy Sexy Juice

100+ simple juice, smoothie & nut milk recipes to supercharge your health

Plus an energizing 3-day cleanse

by Kris Carr

She’s been on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday touting the benefits of juicing and healthy food as a medicine. If you haven’t heard of her, Kris Carr is the queen of Crazy, Sexy as in Cancer Tips, Diet, Kitchen and now Juice.

She lives by her word. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, because of her “personal crisis she searched for her own “personal wellness revolution. By utilizing a plant-based diet she feels healthier than when she was first diagnosed. This is her story of sharing her “journey into the transformative powers of fresh raw fruits and vegetables.

She starts off by explaining her theories of why the average American doesn’t eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables; be it lack of preparations time, shelf life, price, taste and/or method of preparation. She has found the answer within the 100+ recipes of juice and smoothie combinations. When a person sees over a pound of fruits and vegetables before they go through a juicer it looks like a lot of food. More than an average person would want to consume in one sitting; after a run through a juicer and that same amount looks manageable and ultra healthy.

More than just a recipe book, Kris mildly explains some science behind the reasoning to juice/blend. She also explains the difference between types of juicers and blenders. She gives you a section on prepping your kitchen and even grocery shopping with tips to save money. Washing and cleaning these gifts from the earth is important to remove the bacteria, sand and possibly pesticides if not buying organic, which she includes methods to keep them clean.

In part two of the book, the next section is a listing “Spotlight on greens and then fruits/vegetables with tips on how to select them, how to store them, their top nutrients and their individual health benefits. She includes “Superfood Boosts and substitutions to make these juices/blends as nutritional as possible. A FAQ section is next where she dispels myths of juicing and tackles areas of information that many people want to know.

What about all of that pulp from juicing, isn’t it a waste? Not in her house, she has recipes for making crackers, veggie burgers and other dishes so nothing goes to waste. Straight into the juice section she starts off with cleanser recipes with a “Mellow Green juice then onto a “Classic Green Lemonade etc. Healers are up next with recipe names such as “Root Power, “Immune Boost, “Garden-in-a-glass and more. The next section is Boosters for the time of day when an energy boost is needed. Our skin and healthy glow can’t be left out, she adds Beautifier recipes to make sure we slow down the aging process and use ingredients to deter bloating while keeping hydrated.

The smoothie section is equally as generous and detailed with pH warriors and green smoothie recipes. In section 9 she details nut and seed milks. In part three of the book
she outlines a three-day cleanse and gives recipes, snack options, and grocery lists to help each step of the way.

The photographs throughout the book are not only eye-catching, but are artistic and detailed. You feel like you can reach into the book and lift a fruit or a glass of juice right off the page. They are inspiring and beautifully crafted.

Kris Carr and her team have created a book full of health and full of vitality that would not collect dust on our bookshelf. This beautiful volume would find its pages with weathered corners as it would be used again and again. That is a testament of its worth, how delighted a reader utilizes these recipes to regain optimal health and that effervescent smile that comes from drinking these juices.

What a neat book! This is my first Kris Carr cookbook to read and I was impressed. There is beautiful photography throughout the whole book with easy to follow instructions and explanations on each recipe. She refers you to the page number in her book where an ingredient's recipe can be found, along with more information. I am not much of a juicer and lean towards nut milk and smoothies, but found all the recipes to look appealing. If a recipe contained an uncommon ingredient, Kris told you where you could find it, along with her favorite brands. A++++ book. I highly recommend! I was offered this ebook through netgalley for my unbiased opinion.

This book is amazing. Not only does she give you a ton of juice and smoothie recipes to try, she breaks them down into how each group of drinks is helping your body. So helpful when you have specific health issues to overcome!
She also shares her knowledge of juicing and blending from living this lifestyle for the past fifteen years. Way more information than I thought I would get from this book, and I'm so grateful.
Kris Carr is my ultimate health guru and has taught me so much. If you haven't read her book Crazy Sexy Diet, put it on your to-read list!!

I enjoyed this book for it's information sections on produce (e.g., how to store, nutrients in each ingredient, etc.), as well as the provision of both juice and smoothie recipes. The author recognizes the importance of keeping juices "green" in order to reduce sugar. Several of her smoothie recipes were innovative and contained combinations that I had not tried. This is a great book for beginners, as well as those who regularly juice or make smoothies and want to increase their knowledge.

I love this juice/smoothie/etc. recipe book and I can't wait to try a lot more. But the herbal elixir is by far a favorite. I just might have to check out the rest of Kris Carr's library. I'm definitely still a beginner juicer, but know enough if the basics to get by. Carr's book was a good balance of lots of this basic info plus her own experiences as a juicing pro. Other than the recipes, I loved the section on choosing and storing produce. Other key takeaways include the pros and cons of juicing vs blending and that I can freeze juices!
