Tsugumi ?ba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, ?ba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi ?ba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by ?ba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

Okay is it just me or are the representations of women in this particular volume SO SCREWED UP? Girls are not as smart. Girls always need saving. Girls make good pawns if you happen to have a notebook that can KILL PEOPLE and need something to distract the police from suspecting you. (I can't tell you HOW MANY DATES I've been on for that reason. All you fellas out there and your notebooks of death.) I had thought it might have been my imagination before, but this couldn't be more stereotypical of generic gender roles. Also need to add, I was super disappointed in the previous books to find out L was a guy (I was convinced otherwise). All of that said, the story is still super intriguing and I'm this deep in now. No turning back...even if Light's entire personality has now drained away and I know I'm stuck following airhead Misa for at least a few more. Thank heaven's for those wacky Shinigami entertaining the heck out of me (and luckily making the story more interesting). Can't we just hang out with them more in Shinigami-land?

Guys? Am I the only one who's still waiting for their own Death Note? ?

This is probably one of the funniest books in the series. I had a sheet mask while reading this, and I kept smiling, so it was not sitting right around my mouth! ?

I really like Misa (not only because she is my namesake) but because she's childish, impulsive and a bit unpredictable. I love it that Light is suddenly forced to make his plans around this ball of energy that is only bound to explode! It is so much fun. I almost feel sorry for him. Almost. Not really. ?

And Light versus L, so much fun to watch their back and forth! And I love it when you think that one of them made a fabulous move only to be overplayed by the other one.

Despite the fact that this book is titled "Love," there isn't a shred of genuine romance to be found. Instead, we're given yet another dose—and a new flavor—of Light's ability to gain and manipulate trust. This is another another treacherous friendship for Light. Light manipulates the suspense of the plot and keeps readers wondering with his flawless exchanges with Misa and his slick negotiations with L.

Still a good installment to the Death Note series but I can't say I was as enamored with this volume as I saw with the previous three. The plot still surprised me at every turn and remained as action-packed as ever but the addition of the character Misa was a let-down for me. I was hoping for some bad-ass girl power but what I received was a submissive girl who falls in love at first sight and is displayed in an entirely sexual nature. She also showed up previously unseen flaws in Light's own character that made my alignment with his cause dwindle a little. He was dismissive, uncaring for her feelings and quickly wrote her off as an 'idiot'. I have been entirely behind his immoral cause, as is underlying ideals were just, but it seems now that he willing to sacrifice and use innocents and get rid of any minor inconvenience in any way necessary, even if they share the same ethics and principles.

The only other female characters in this series have been fleeting and I feel it does females everywhere injustice that this is the only real representative for our gender. The plot, as I mentioned, was as thrilling as ever but I just could not get past this unfair female representation. I am still excited to continue with the series but I can only hope that it does not contain more of the same misogynistic ideologies!

I really liked Misa at first-- she's a really smart and quirky character. But I'm not a fan of her motivation, and it seems like they devolved her down to a girl with a silly crush. I would have really liked it if she'd had real goals of her own.

But the plot in this one was so great and the twists kept coming! Super interested to see what happens now!

Death Note, Vol. 4: Love (Death Note #4), Tsugumi Ohba, Alexis Kirsch (Translator)
With two Kiras on the loose, L asks Light to join the task force and pose as the real Kira in order to catch the copycat. L still suspects Light and figures that this is the perfect excuse to get closer to his quarry. Light agrees to the plan in order to have free access to the task force resources. But when Light manages to contact the new Kira, he discovers that his rival is anything but as expected. Will Light escape from love unscathed?

Not as great as the previous volumes but still really, really good. This story is just incredibly compelling. I can't wait to watch the TV show after I finish the manga series.

I’m on now! =)

Every time I think this plot can’t get even more tangled than it already is, Tsugumi Ohba seems to read my mind and say: “Ha! You haven’t seen anything yet!” *lol*

No, seriously! I have no idea how you come up with a story like “Death Note” and I most definitely don’t know how the author is able to keep the arc of suspense going like that. I was right about Kira II mixing up things and making it even more interesting. Though I’ve to admit that I thought we would get a little bit more time with her. Her fast introduction and also the way things played out with her character were quite surprising. We got a lot of new infos about how the Death Note works but unfortunately Misa isn’t as clever as Light which led to some difficulties and problems along the way.

L... well he never ceases to amaze me, but I can’t help but wonder how he’s going to solve the new puzzle Light threw his way. Because that ending! Woah! It was quite something and I’m so damn curious how volume 5 will play out. It’s definitely not going to be easy for Light and I’m sure he’ll have some problems along the way. Will his plan work out? Well, only Vol.5 is able to give me that answer and I’m planning to get to it asap! XD

Time to dive into vol.4!

“Rem: The way to kill a shinigami is to make them fall in love with a human.
Misa: What a wonderful way to kill.”

I certainly think this has been the best volume so far!
With two gods of death and two students with death notes, you would assume that they wouldn't get caught committing endless crimes! But with L investigating the case, things are starting to get a bit more spellbinding and terrifying!

Again the pace picks up. This review will be a super short one because I do not have a lot to add.

It was a lot of fun. I could not put it down. Of course, it wasn't perfect. Intrigue could have been a bit higher, the twist at the end lost me a bit (so I guess I'll have to read vol. 5 to understand it), but overall, it was a bunch of fun.

I love the dynamic that Misa introduces to the story. I love the way Light tries to out-maneuver L in the end. I love the will they/won't they situation with L's name. I also really liked how the Shinigami mythos is once again expanded.

I have honestly no clue in what direction the next volume will go in...

I remember finding Misa annoying, but damn this time around she is irritating as hell. Loved it though. L is the greatest!

More and more characters, such as Misa Amane, are introduced during the series, taking the tale in new ways. When another shinigami arrives on Earth, delivering another Death Note, Misa is introduced. I won't say what happens when she first appears, but her appearance marks a significant turning point in Light and L's mental war.

In the Death Note series, there is a key turning point after which the story and tone alter dramatically. Some claim this is the point at which the plot begins to unravel. Personally, I wouldn't say it breaks apart, but it has obviously lost some of its sharp edges after this point.

The series is more and more exciting and the fourth volume is no exception. In this new chapter, the circle narrows around Light, with 'L' always careful to the events about Kira and there is the appearance of a new character, Misa. I read it in one breath, captured by the many events and plot twists that occur during the story. The fight between Kira and 'L' is increasingly tight, every move of the first, as cunning, is immediately examined and analyzed by the second. Light must reckon with the second Kira, which will prove to be a problem not so easy to solve, and which threatens to cause his downfall. The character of Misa, new entrance, is often ambiguous, in some cases childish, in other shrewd and determined, but still a bit too much on the stereotype of the frivolous girl, probably underestimated. I must admit that with all of these rules, the diary, remembers an RPG, but the many reversals and twists keep alive the attention, making it an interesting and never boring story.

The finish is amazing, it's almost painful not to be able to continue immediately with the next.
I enjoyed it very much and it remains one of my favorites manga.

OK, now I'm just annoyed! I wasn't crazy about the portrayal of women earlier in this series--mainly due to the lack of meaningful women characters. But now that there's an important female character, all she does is squeal and mope about boys and wear short skirts and model. Oh, and get tortured. GRRRRR.

TW// stalking, mentions of murder (including of parents), sexual assault/harassment

I read this volume on Shonen Jump and even though I’m not the biggest fan of reading manga digitally, my bank account is going to thank me for how much money I save with that subscription.

I liked the drama that Misa brought to the story at first, but she’s very naive and is easily being manipulated by Light, so that whole relationship feels gross and extremely toxic.

There were two parts of this volume that I absolutely loved though.

I loved seeing how Shinigami can die. It was a unique twist that I wasn’t expecting from this series. It was really heartfelt and I’m guessing it will come into play again later in this series.

The other part I loved was L and Light’s friendship. L is a very reclusive guy, so seeing him call Light a friend was beautiful. I know that it will only lead to heartbreak down the line though, so I know I might be a mess toward the end of this series.

The hunt continues and it is even more complex with the arrival of Misa. Unfortunately, she is not as smart as Naomi, but what she is capable of is a real threat to Light Yagami.

I wasn't particularly fond with what her motives are and how she impacts the bigger chess game between Kira and L, but it does make things so thrilling at times, especially with that ending.

Sort of fearing that one volume where things will definitely be insane, yet still excited to get there.

It's not like there's anything new happening at this point, is there? L thinks Light might be Kira, Light is Kira but has a brilliantly convoluted plan to convince L that he's not Kira, Light's father spends a lot of time wearing suits and looking shocked, so on and so forth.

Rarely does a manga get so good and my god this one is amazing!

We have the introduction of Misa Amane, the second death note holder and we find her origins and motives here and how she kills people and the investigation with the second kira continues and I love the face off between L and Light and then the whole exposition of her to Light and what happens to it and how Light handles this unexpected component and its a massive twist at every turn and rarely does a manga maintain the thrill component and we see it here and those last few pages OMG the twist is such that it flips the entire series on its head!

Its an amazing volume and it does get better here an dI love the characteres and exploration and the twists and sure it does change the status quo but its for the good as its just perfect and also the art is just too good here!
