Okay is it just me or are the representations of women in this particular volume SO SCREWED UP? Girls are not as smart. Girls always need saving. Girls make good pawns if you happen to have a notebook that can KILL PEOPLE and need something to distract the police from suspecting you. (I can't tell you HOW MANY DATES I've been on for that reason. All you fellas out there and your notebooks of death.) I had thought it might have been my imagination before, but this couldn't be more stereotypical of generic gender roles. Also need to add, I was super disappointed in the previous books to find out L was a guy (I was convinced otherwise). All of that said, the story is still super intriguing and I'm this deep in now. No turning back...even if Light's entire personality has now drained away and I know I'm stuck following airhead Misa for at least a few more. Thank heaven's for those wacky Shinigami entertaining the heck out of me (and luckily making the story more interesting). Can't we just hang out with them more in Shinigami-land?

Mips Superb!
Good-bye 'airhead Misa' & Welcome Ryuk! :)

I thought that - Naomi was such a cool character and I was disappointed how quickly she disappeared and how the other female characters in her wake are so irritating and weak.

Charlie Diggory I very much agree! I recently finished the series and loved it, but I felt frustrated at the fact that most of the female characters were just love struck on Light and easy to use, while any strong female characters seemed to be killed off very fast. I thought Mello was a girl at first and was very excited to potentially have a main female character who wasn't just a pawn who Light could manipulate, and seemed unlikely to die too soon, until they were referred to as "he" and I got a little downhearted.

Ben Rowe I agree, it was much more clear on second reading. I think the writers were much less able or interested in writing believable and interesting female characters.

I still enjoy the series but it certainly reduced my enjoyment.

Clarissa It is true there is lots of sexism here ... I’m just hoping she was just pretending and is gonna kill Kira in a twist of events !

Astrid Viveros I didn't notice until I read this review, you're right! What I did notice was some unnecessary drawings of the characters panties. Its the first manga series I read and it's interesting. Anything you recommend with stronger female characters?

Ethan Yeah, the author’s attitude towards women is pretty awful, which definitely drags down an otherwise compelling story
