Yakov Golyadkin is one of those men and Fyodor Dostoyevsky enjoys deriding his hollowness鈥�
鈥淗itherto, gentlemen, you have not known me. To explain myself here and now would not be appropriate. I will only touch on it lightly in passing. There are people, gentlemen, who dislike roundabout ways and only mask themselves at masquerades. There are people who do not see man鈥檚 highest avocation in polishing the floor with their boots. There are people, gentlemen, who refuse to say that they are happy and enjoying a full life when, for instance, their trousers set properly. There are people, finally, who dislike dashing and whirling about for no object, fawning, and licking the dust, and above all, gentlemen, poking their noses where they are not wanted鈥� I鈥檝e told you almost everything, gentlemen; now allow me to withdraw鈥︹€�

The main hero may seem to be full of high ideals but those ideals are nothing but his groundless fantasies. He is in love but he wants to win his love in a very strange way鈥�
鈥淲hat if that chandelier,鈥� flashed through Mr. Golyadkin鈥檚 mind, 鈥渨ere to come down from the ceiling and fall upon the company. I should rush at once to save Klara Olsufyevna. 鈥楽ave her!鈥� I should cry. 鈥楧on鈥檛 be alarmed, madam, it鈥檚 of no consequence, I will rescue you, I.鈥� Then鈥︹€�

When Yakov Golyadkin starts seeing his double or rather his evil doppelg盲nger, he just sees his doom and nemesis.
The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and by are very close in their main idea 鈥� both Yakov Golyadkin and Gregor Samsa are superfluous persons for whom the world has no use so eventually it destroys them鈥�
鈥淧erhaps it will all be for the best,鈥� he thought, 鈥渁nd perhaps in this way I鈥檝e run away from trouble.鈥� Mr. Golyadkin suddenly became all at once light-hearted. 鈥淥h, if only it could turn out for the best!鈥� thought our hero, though he put little faith in his own words. 鈥淚 know what I鈥檒l do鈥�,鈥� he thought. 鈥淣o, I know, I鈥檇 better try the other tack鈥� Or wouldn鈥檛 it be better to do this?...鈥�

Some are born to be masters of their lives and some are just fly-by-night moths hurrying to burn in the candle flame.

Nabokov considered this 鈥淒ostoyevsky鈥檚 best work,鈥� but, then again, Nabokov didn鈥檛 like Dostoyevsky: he also called the novella 鈥渁n obvious and shameless imitation of Gogol's "Nose." 鈥淭he Double鈥� is indeed a great work, though far from Dostoyevsky鈥檚 greatest (too full of repetitions, verbal and structural, too often willfully obscure), and鈥擨 would argue鈥攊t is great precisely because of the manner in which it obviously and shamelessly imitates Gogol.

In 鈥淭he Double,鈥� the twenty-five year old Dostoyevsky sought to discover his own path as a writer by imitating鈥攖o the point of parody鈥攖he style and themes of Gogol, a writer he dearly loved. He took Gogol鈥檚 typical protagonist鈥攁 middle class bureaucrat of the rank of 鈥渢itular councillor鈥攁nd speculated: how would a Gogol hero like this鈥攁 lonely egoist obsessed with rank, humiliated by slights, isolated in suspicion and near poverty鈥攔eact if he encountered a man who looked and acted exactly like himself and who began, little by little, to take over his life, his apartment, his acquaintances, even his duties as titular councillor? Dostoyevsky concluded such a man would certainly go mad, and decided to document鈥攆rom the protagonist鈥檚 point of view鈥攈is agonized descent into delusion.

In his exaggerated imitation of Gogol, Dostoevsky so thoroughly identifies with the councillor's point of view that his 鈥減arody鈥� becomes an implied criticism. Gogol鈥攁s he did in 鈥淭he Overcoat,鈥� 鈥淭he Nose,鈥� and 鈥淭he Diary of a Madman鈥濃€攚ould have abased his hero, ridiculed him, exploited him as a figure of fun and as an excuse for violent shifts in tone and mood, all the psychological insight he possessed subordinate to satiric intent and dramatic effect.

Dostoyevsky however was too compassionate a writer, too empathetic a man, to objectify his hero in this way. Instead, he identifies with him thoroughly, creates an experience so immediate and so real that the reader is forced to experience the consciousness of a madman, alternately consumed by shame and filled with elation, disoriented and alienated in a hostile and ambiguous world.

Where Gogol would have presented the reader with an absurd situation, a philosophical dilemma, Dostoevsky instead immerses him in a psychological crisis. And this psychological crisis, for those familiar with Dostoevsky鈥檚 later work, hints at the existential and theological crises yet to come.

Through the bureaucratic ocean of papers, there lies Josef K., bored with unanswered arguments.
Behind an unapologetic desk, Bartleby sits in silence, preferring nothing.
As a fearful door opens, Bashmachkin leaves the smothering atmosphere of the office, ready to meet with the others. All set to forget the tasteless morning coffee and the men trying to make their way through scheme and flattery, and recover the humanity once lost. The sun is setting. A gentle breeze with a scent of independence caresses their faces.
Golyadkin, our protagonist, is waiting for them.
The world of the oppressed rests in Dostoyevsky's prose. The essential analyst of the human nature.

Briefly, The Double is about Mr. Golyadkin and his doppelg盲nger, Mr. Golyadkin Jr., someone who has been born under a stressful snowstorm.
This novella has many elements that can be found in Gogol's work. His influence on Dostoyevsky is well-known. However, this writer dealt with those same themes with an innovative style that traces clear boundaries. He even did that with his own work. For me, this was nothing like the novels I have read before. Universal themes like oppression, sorrow, alienation, work and loneliness are always treated from different angles and original ways of execution. Originality perceived by the mind of S谩bato: we all are the sum of what we have read. Topics don't change; the way we deal with them might.

When I read , my eyes contemplated Dostoyevsky's genius, word by word. My copy is all written. I highlighted hundreds of sentences that tried to enlighten the intricate path toward the mind. A modest attempt at understanding. However, the times I underlined something on The Double was for the main purpose of keeping up with the story. Actions. Names. I din't find many memorable reflections that left me at awe. The ones I found were at the beginning, mostly. So, what then? It was all in the interpretation. The development of facts, the story itself was what left me staring at an invisible point, drawing in the air, pondering about my own existence and the futility of things.
The fragility of one of the most precious things we own. Our mind. A set of cognitive faculties. A place. A process. Sanity.
His position at that moment was like the position of a man standing over a frightful precipice, when the earth breaks away under him, is rocking, shifting, sways for a last time, and falls, drawing him into the abyss, and meanwhile the unfortunate man has neither the strength nor the firmness of spirit to jump back, to take his eyes from the yawning chasm; the abyss draws him, and he finally leaps into it himself, himself hastening the moment of his own perdition. (39)

We cannot own our mind. Under certain circumstances鈥攕ad, nerve wracking, shameful circumstances鈥�, it reacts as it pleases. Or the best way it can. It is the main source of who we are and yet, a trivial fact has the power to break it. A single act. An accumulation of traumatic acts. A life of unfortunate events. A pile of obedient frustrations. The meek silence of unwanted, inevitable solitude. The desire of success in a suffocating environment with people that have already been chosen over you. The search of identity in an alienated world. You can't be alone too much.

These are just some of the observations that emerge from The Double, a true work of art that portrays a man's psychological struggle using a brushstroke of unforgiving reality. We are placed inside Golyadkin's head. We are privileged spectators of his mind. We see it work. We see it weep. We see it shocked, unable to move. We shout, because we know what to do (even though we probably would react the same way if we were in his shoes, you never know).
A privilege that thrills and frightens.
There's much emotion in Dostoyevsky's descriptive and cautious writing. So much, it's difficult to bear.

The Double is a novella written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published on January 30, 1846 in the Fatherland Notes. The Double centers on a government clerk who goes mad.

It deals with the internal psychological struggle of its main character, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, who repeatedly encounters someone who is his exact double in appearance but confident, aggressive, and extroverted, characteristics that are the polar opposites to those of the toadying "pushover" protagonist.

The motif of the novella is a doppelganger (an apparition or double of a living person).

This novel's theme of the diabolical double and the collective conspiracy it deals with have undoubtedly inspired a few thrillers. Dostoievski was able to convey the narrator's paranoia. Unfortunately, however, this simple civil servant is gradually losing ground鈥攖he appearance of its double namesake and physical.
The novel's originality is that we enter the narrator's mind, and it isn't easy to distinguish between what is real and what the character fantasizes about. As a result, the outcome is ambiguous: it's up to us to form opinions. In this sense, the narrative works wonderfully and leaves us amid nightmarish turmoil.
However, I struggled to get into the novel and rushed out. The many repetitions of scenes, especially dialogue, tired me of this spiral of paranoia. There are many gripping and distressing passages, but I expected more, convinced by other Dostoyevsky novels that are more gripping and developed. I came out disappointed.

The morbidly sensitive and pretentious clerk Golyadkin, already clinically deranged by the social pressures of his office and by unrequited love, suffers a growing persecution mania, which leads him to encounter another man looking exactly like him who is the leader of a conspiracy against him. He is finally driven to a madhouse by a series of encounters with this being, who is sometimes clearly his own reflection in a glass, sometimes the embodiment of his own aggressive fantasies, sometimes an unpleasant ordinary mortal who happens to have the same name and appearance, and sometimes, in some supernatural way, himself.

Dostoevsky's voices are woven subtly together so that one hardly has time to register their differences in the flow of reading: an illusion of objectivity is thus created. Nonetheless, it does not go far enough to dispel an underlying, ghostly, whispering anxiety: is the double real or not? The real interpretive problem for the reader is deciding whether the double exists in the world, or only as a figment of Mr Golyadkin鈥檚 imagination. Is he mad? Does he have some sort of identity disorder? Is he the victim of some elaborate prank? or is it all simply true? It makes for a fascinating psychological study, whether or not there is a natural explanation within the narrative. Since the whole work is from Golyadkin鈥檚 perspective, albeit in the third person, the reader is trapped claustrophobically in his panicked and chaotic mindset. Other characters appear to see the double, but there is always the possibility that we are seeing their reactions through Mr Golyadkin鈥檚 eyes.

This is more or less the blueprint for later doppelganger narratives, often referenced in theory on the topic, and although the idea of the double is probably as old as humanity, Dostoevsky seems to have been one of the first writers to develop the idea. Structurally, the narrative works so well, and is less dense than some of his other novels. He really keeps you on your toes right up to it's finale. Reading this, lead me to Jos茅 Saramago's modern take on the doppelg盲nger, which I marginally prefered.

Cuando uno lee la obra de un autor en su totalidad, especialmente la de uno tan prol铆fico como Fi贸dor Dostoievski, sabe 铆ntimamente que r谩pidamente comenzar谩 a releer aquellos de sus libros que considere m谩s queridos y que m谩s hondo hayan calado en su coraz贸n y su mente. M谩s all谩 de la repercusi贸n que ese libro haya causado en la cr铆tica o en los lectores, uno sabe que est谩 entre sus favoritos y en mi caso, uno de ellos es "El Doble". Dostoievski escribi贸 mucho. Much铆simo. Si sum谩ramos las p谩ginas de su obra esta contendr铆a varios miles. En lo personal considero entre mis preferidos a este libro, "El Idiota", "Pobres Gentes", Humillados y Ofendidos", "Crimen y Castigo", "Los Hermanos Karam谩zov" y "Memorias del Subsuelo", puesto que han marcado a fuego mi devoci贸n por este genial y 煤nico escritor ruso a quien considero mi favorito (seguido de Franz Kafka), de modo que una relectura de sus cl谩sicos era inevitable y continuar谩 seguramente con otros t铆tulos de su obra.
La elecci贸n de "El Doble" responde a una afinidad muy particular que poseo particularmente por esta tem谩tica en la literatura. El Doble o "doppleg盲nger", t茅rmino de origen alem谩n y que significa "quien camina a mi lado" ha sido inspiraci贸n para much铆simos cuentos y novelas y ha sido utilizado por los escritores de diversas maneras. S贸lo es necesario recorrer algunos t铆tulos para descubrir la cantidad de veces que la literatura fue visitada por dobles: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde de Stevenson, William Wilson de Edgar Allan Poe, el monje Medardus de la novela "Los Elixires del Diablo" de E.T.A. Hoffmann (y de quien comentar茅 m谩s adelante), Tyler Durden de "El Club de la Pelea", de Chuck Palahniuk, "El Retrato de Dorian Gray" de Oscar Wilde, "El Hombre Duplicado" de Jos茅 Saramago y tantos otros que podr铆a listar para tener una idea de la abundancia de personajes tan particulares como atrayentes en 茅ste g茅nero.
En el caso de Dostoievski, su libro "El Doble" fue, tempranamente, un punto de inflexi贸n en su carrera puesto que iba a poner su reputaci贸n en el candelero literario r谩pidamente. Dostoievski hab铆a surgido de las tinieblas con una novela en forma epistolar que se llam贸 "Pobres Gentes" y que hab铆a suscitado la admiraci贸n exacerbada del cr铆tico literario m谩s importante que ten铆a Rusia a principios del siglo XIX, y me estoy refiriendo a Vissarion Bielinski. 脡ste, junto al poeta Nekr谩sov, hab铆an le铆do el libro debut de Dostoievski durante una noche completa y a la ma帽ana siguiente fueron a buscarlo para alabarlo con las mejores cr铆ticas, bautiz谩ndolo como "el nuevo G贸gol".
Esto le sirvi贸 a Dostoievski para poder ingresar a los distintos circuitos del mundillo literario de San Petersburgo y as铆 codearse con los c茅lebres autores de la 茅poca, como por ejemplo un joven Iv谩n Turgu茅niev. Su apellido fue r谩pidamente conocido por todo el mundo y le depositaron toda la confianza para sus pr贸ximas obras.
La idea de Dostoievski para su segundo libro cambiar铆a radicalmente respecto del argumento y tem谩tica del primero. El giro de 360掳 fue demasiado brusco y cuando "El Doble" apareci贸 a finales de 1846, produjo un impacto negativo que cambi贸 el brillante debut promisorio de un prodigio de las letras rusas al olvido casi sistem谩tico de 茅ste sumado a una cr铆tica cruel y despiadada. De m谩s est谩 decir que el libro fue fuertemente resistido y pas贸 sin pena ni gloria dejando a Dostoievski en una mala posici贸n literaria y sobre todo an铆mica de la que tardar铆a en reponerse. Puntualmente la causa m谩s cercana al fracaso de libro era la confusi贸n que 茅ste generaba en el lector y la extensi贸n un tanto desmedida para una obra sobre un hombre agobiado por la aparici贸n de un doble exactamente igual a 茅l.
Dostoievski construy贸 al personaje principal de "El Doble" creyendo que iba a causar revuelo en el sentido contrario, el de la originalidad, pero fue 茅sta la caracter铆stica que m谩s le reprocharon. En primer lugar remarcaron la gran influencia hoffmaniana (Dostoievski era un admirador del gran autor alem谩n); similitudes con el poema "El Jinete de Bronce" de otro de sus 铆dolos, el gran Alexandr Pushkin y adem谩s, gran parte de la cr铆tica ve铆a a "El Doble" como una burda imitaci贸n parodiante de los personajes de Nik贸lai G贸gol y especialmente ve铆an que se hab铆a servido de novelas y cuentos gogolianos como "El Capote", "La Nariz", "Almas Muertas" e incluso "Diario de un loco" para construir al personaje principal, el del Sr. Goliadkin. Si hasta su lacayo se llama Petrushka, al igual que el de Chichikov en "Almas Muertas".
Pero en verdad, 驴esto tan as铆? Debo reconocer que el estudio previo que incluye una investigaci贸n hist贸rica, literaria, personal y social de Dostoievski y Rusia, desarrollada por el argentino Alejandro Ariel Gonz谩lez, quien fuera premiado en Mosc煤 por la traducci贸n de este libro es sencillamente descomunal. Desde la explicaci贸n hist贸rica que inicia desde el legado del zar Pedro el Grande, hasta Nicol谩s I, quien instaurara la famosa "Tabla de Rangos" para ordenar todo el sistema burocr谩tico del Estado, hasta el entorno social de Dostoievski por esos a帽os, seguida por una profunda investigaci贸n de este libro y complementada por el testimonio de la cr铆tica contempor谩nea del autor hasta nuestros d铆as. Analiza tambi茅n las diferencias formales, estil铆sticas, argumentales y caracterol贸gicas entre ambas versiones.
En este volumen podemos leer las dos versiones de la novela, rica en notas, explicaciones y aclaraciones a pie de p谩gina. La edici贸n de 1846 se subtitulaba "Aventuras del se帽or Goliadkin" mientras que la de 1866 el mismo fue reemplazado por "Poema de Petersburgo". Como yo puntualmente hab铆a le铆do la versi贸n de 1866, opt茅 por leer la original de 1846 que es pr谩cticamente igual a la m谩s nueva en los primeros nueve cap铆tulos, pero que fue reeelaborada por Dostoievski a partir del cap铆tulo X hasta arribar a cambios profundos e incluso en los p谩rrafos finales. Y por 煤ltimo, podemos encontrar un peque帽o apartado con los Borradores para la planeada reelaboraci贸n de "El Doble", algo completamente in茅dito a煤n para los lectores m谩s dostoievskianos. Sencillamente impresionante.
Yendo un poco al an谩lisis de la novela uno se pregunta: 驴Realmente Dostoievski escribi贸 un libro flojo y desatinado? Pareciera que no.
Gonz谩lez nos explica que por alguna raz贸n, el autor no dej贸 nada al azar ni ning煤n cabo suelto. Es m谩s, reconoce que se inspir贸 en G贸gol y especialmente en Hoffmann para imprimirle las caracter铆sticas del doble al Sr. Goliadkin pero teniendo en cuenta detalles que a todos los lectores se nos pasar铆an por alto, comenzando por el nombre del personajes principal. Es el 煤nico caso en que Dostoievski llama a un personaje con el mote de "Sr." y no con nombre y patron铆mico como se estila en las novelas rusas. En segundo lugar nombre, patron铆mico y apellido del personaje: I谩kov Petr贸vich Goliadkin. Por ejemplo s贸lo tomaremos el nombre, de origen b铆blico y oh casualidad que I谩kov, forma rusa del nombre b铆blico Ya'akob, se basa en Jacob, hijo de Isaac y Rebecca que es adem谩s... hermano gemelo de Esa煤.
Pero esto no es todo. Entre otros detalles, cuando nos adentramos en la obra, leemos que el Sr. Goliadkin realiza un trayecto paralelo al r铆o Fontanka y varios sucesos se dan entre los puentes Ishmailovski y 脕nchikov y este 煤ltimo posee... si, posee sendas estatuas de los Di贸scuros C谩stor y Pollux, conocido en el zod铆aco como el signo de G茅minis. Es m谩s, en las notas al pie de la p谩gina 98, Gonz谩lez transcribe parte de la cr铆tica literaria de N.I. Os铆pov (circa 1929) y nos revela un dato m谩s que asombroso:
"Son muy interesantes las observaciones de Os铆pov acerca de la duplicidad y especularidad que recorren las p谩ginas del relato: Iv谩n Semion贸vich, funcionario que ocupa el sitio de Goliadkin y Semi贸n Ivanovich (difunto al que sustituye el Goliadkin menor); Goliadkin tiene dos jefes directos (Ant贸n Atnon贸vich y Andr茅i Fil铆ppovich, y dos superiores (Su Excelencia y Olsufi Iv谩novich); dos son los compa帽eros que encuentra por la calle, y dos son los encuentros con ellos; dos mujeres (Karolina Iv谩novna y Klara Ols煤fevna), dos criados (Petrushka y Evstafi), dos amanuenses (Ost谩fev y Pisarenko); dos son las viejas que casi derriba Goliadkin en el baile; dos son los vendedores ambulantes que derriba en la calle; dos son los rublos que le debe a Vajram茅iev, dos son las horas que espera en la escalera de servicio; dos tras la pila de le帽a; dos minutos; dos pasos; dos ojos de fuego lo miran en la oscuridad del coche que lo lleva al manicomio."
驴Parece esto obra de un inexperto escritor de 25 a帽os que quiso "probar suerte" con su segundo libro? Pues no. Dostoievski sab铆a muy bien d贸nde quer铆a llegar y entonces, al sufrir semejante rev茅s decide reescribir el libro veinte a帽os despu茅s, en 1866, a帽o que para variar ser铆a uno de los m谩s convulsionados de su vida, a punto de ir preso por no cumplir con su editor escribe "El Jugador" en tan s贸lo 26 d铆as y comienza a escribir los bosquejos iniciales de una de sus obras claves, "Crimen y Castigo, pero antes, reescribe y corrige "El Doble". S贸lo una mente brillante, 煤nica e inigualable como la de este escritor 煤nico puede desenvolverse bajo tanta presi贸n.
El Sr. Goliadkin ser谩 objeto de estudio de todo el mundo. Todos quieren llegar a desentra帽ar qui茅n es y qu茅 es lo que puntualmente sufre a lo largo de esta novela. Goliadkin formar谩 la famosa "Trilog铆a del Subsuelo" junto a personajes como Rodion Rom谩novich Rask贸lnikov, de "Crimen y Castigo" y el atormentado personaje sin nombre de su otro libro "Memorias del Subsuelo", personajes que le llamar铆an poderosamente la atenci贸n a uno de los m谩s grandes fil贸sofos de la historia como Frederick Nietzche. Yo, por sus caracter铆sticas, agregar铆a tambi茅n a esta trilog铆a a otros personajes dostoievskiano como el del cuento "El sue帽o de un hombre rid铆culo" y "El se帽or Projarchin", pero est谩 visto que los tres primeros conforman un tri谩ngulo psicol贸gico digno de estudio desde que esos libros aparecieran en su momento.
Cr铆ticos, lectores, fil贸sofos y psicoanalistas siguen debatiendo qui茅n es realmente el Sr. Goliadkin y esto que plantea muy seriamente Gonz谩lez en el estudio previo:
鈥澛縂oliadkin menor es real? 驴Es una alucinaci贸n? 驴Es una proyecci贸n? 驴S贸lo Goliadkin ve a su doble o tambi茅n lo ven los otros personajes? 驴Las cartas que escribe y recibe Goliadkin son reales o imaginarias? 驴Hay una conspiraci贸n en su contra o todo es producto de su perturbada psiquis? 驴Realidad y delirio est谩n delimitados o se funden?... 驴El Doble es s贸lo una historia de una locura? 驴Es un relato fant谩stico? Si fuese lo primero, 驴Goliadkin est谩 loco desde un principio o se vuelve loco durante el relato? 驴Goliadkin menor es causo o consecuencia de la locura del protagonista? 驴Cu谩l es su dolencia? 驴Paranoia? 驴Esquizofrenia? 驴Man铆a de grandeza? 驴Por qu茅 enloquece? Si fuese lo segundo, 驴qu茅 representa la figura del doble? 驴Cabe hablar de desdoblamiento de personalidad o de duplicaci贸n? M谩s en general, 驴puede hablarse de cr铆tica social? 驴De novela de tesis? 驴De parodia? Todas estas cuestiones est谩n en el centro del debate.鈥�
Lo cierto es que "El Doble" no es para nada un libro de menor importancia que otras obras cumbres de Fi贸dor Dostoievski. Sirvi贸 como punto de partida para iniciar la verdadera carrera literaria de este autor que perfeccionar铆a la construcci贸n psicol贸gica de otros personajes tan complejos como Iv谩n Karam谩zov, Piotr Verjovensky, Rodion Rask贸lnikov, Nik贸lai St谩vroguin, Arkady Dolgoruki o Alex茅i Kirilov, s贸lo por nombrar algunos de sus tantos personajes.
Dostoievski es uno de los m谩s grandes novelistas en la historia de la literatura y seg煤n mi humilde opini贸n fue gracias a "El Doble" y no a "Pobres Gentes" como se transform贸 en la gloria literaria que representa para m铆 y para muchos lectores dostoievskianos a quien, gracias a sus incontables ense帽anzas, lo queremos sencillamente como a un padre.

Golyadkin senior, is persecuted by his almost exact double, Golyadkin junior. Jnr ratchets up the abuses and brutality as the novella progresses. It follows Dostoevsky's main themes of helplessness, victimization, and scandal and is seen as a masterpiece by the literary crowd. This almost surreal tale of the harassment of Senior is well worth a read. 7 out of 12, Three Stars.

Well, my friend, from the very start I had to keep pinching my cheek so as to wake up and remind myself that I was reading Dostoyevsky鈥檚 The Double, and not a tale by Gogol 鈥� that Dostoyevsky was Dostoyevsky and not a double of Gogol. Furthermore, two of Gogol鈥檚 works came particularly to mind, The Overcoat and The Nose, not just one. I pinch my cheek again.

But I am not being original in this observation, my friend. It seems that writers (Nabokov for instance 鈥� although I don鈥檛 think he was the only one) and literary critics, most probably in pairs, have noticed this, from Dostoyevsky鈥檚 own time and onwards. That writers, like painters and musicians, take on earlier themes and structures and produce their own version is part of the tradition of dialogue in the arts. Any creator, my friend, engages in communication not just with his/her reader or viewer or listener, but also with the tradition in which the work enters. Realizing this I ceased pinching my check and proceeded with my reading. And this was a good thing, my friend, since my cheek was turning too red.

In a society in which everyone had his welldefined position in the hierarchy that Peter the Great created - the Table of Ranks 鈥� to have someone usurp your identity seems more dangerous than in other societies. What do you think, my friend? But when the other who usurps one鈥檚 identity is entirely different, can we say that he is really a double? May be Doctor Rutenspitz was guilty of this trick of destiny when he gave his patient, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, the prescription that he had to become different from the way he was 鈥� that he had to become more sociable? For what happens when one has to change one鈥檚 way of being and force oneself, gradually, to become different like, for example, be nicer, keep on smiling and go to parties when one was not inclined to that at the beginning. If one succeeds in transforming one鈥檚 nature, one's identity, then can we say that we have become someone else? And what about a sudden substitution instead of a gradual transformation. Isn't this the much more expedient solution, my friend?

The trail of Doubles, or of Doppelg盲ngers, in literature is long, and it will continue duplicating itself. I can list a few now , Nabokov's and , Saramago鈥檚 , Daphne du Maurier's , Italo Calvino's ...

I hope to continue exploring this multiplicative path.

So I feel really bad giving this book two stars, but I just cannot justify another one. I just can't.

Here's the thing - It's written in such an odd voice! The main character, obviously in need of medical treatment, tends to throw the person's name to whom he is speaking into the conversation wayyyyy too much. It's quite distracting, really. Not only that, but he starts and restarts his sentences constantly. I felt as tho the book should have come with a de-coder of sorts just to be able to understand what he was trying to say.

I had no idea what I was reading about for the first, ohhhhh, 50 pages or so. After that point, the story seemed to come together a little (only a little) more, but to be honest, I still really have no clue what was going on. Perhaps that was the point? Having the reader question whether it was the main character or themselves who were really the crazies? Either way, it confused the hell out of me.

I am pretty sure I have missed something here. I must have. But I cannot bear to reread it to find out what I missed.

And I'm a little upset, too. I usually like books that mind-f**k me!

Mr. Dostoevsky, I am sorry, really, I am, Mr. Dostoevsky. I tryed, Mr. Dostoevsky, I say... Mr. Dostoevsky, I really did try.

I have no desire to meet my doppelg盲nger. Hell would be a place filled with our own doubles, I think.

There are many literary examples of a double showing up and causing mayhem: Superman. Xander (from Buffy). The Nutty Professor.

Captain Kirk met his double twice, in and .

It always seems to come down to the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde idea: one of the personalities is strong and powerful, and the other kindly, but also too meek and indecisive. There follows a struggle to see which one is the better man. Whatever happens next, the moral is that we need both aspects to be a whole person.

Mr. Golyadkin in The Double is confronted with his doppelg盲nger. This situation is different than those I've mentioned, for there is no split between the weak and strong personality traits. The guy is all weak. I guess that makes this more of a parody. Before the encounter, he is shown to be vain and petty and ineffective. He goes on fake shopping trips for expensive goods which he never actually buys, seemingly to impress store clerks and himself of his own importance.

So when Golyadkin does meet his double, it really is his double. There is no need to get back to another dimension and somehow integrate. The enjoyment of this book is the comical situations that arise from these meetings. Yet it is nightmarish at the same time because the man is simply going insane. We are only ever in Golyadkin's head, 3rd person limited, and the clues from the other characters make it fairly clear that there really is no double.

Written in 1846, The Double is Dostoyevsky's second novel and it wasn't well received. He revised the novel in 1866 and that is the version we read today. It's a complicated psychological study. And it's fun. What more could you want?

Creepy precursor to Kafka?

This surreal early Dostoevsky novella started as an almost slapstick black comedy whose hapless, paranoid, wussy little 鈥渉ero鈥� suddenly acquires a double 鈥� a slick, devious sociopath who sets out to undermine him and usurp his life. We never really know if this is a psychotic delusion, a psychological 鈥渟hadow鈥� ... or even the Devil himself. Anxiety escalates to an almost unbearable level 鈥� while the exaggerated dramatic narrative never totally loses its dark sense of humor.

Um funcion谩rio zeloso e cumpridor 茅 alvo de graves perturba莽玫es quando um doppelg盲nger manhoso irrompe pela sua vida almejando usurpar o seu mui honrado e labutado lugar no universo 鈥�

Ser谩 sonho?
Realidade?
Ou pura esquizofrenia?
鈥�

Ser谩 que interessa? Ser谩, de facto, relevante deslindar a origem, a causa prim谩ria, desse ente abjeto?鈥�

Quanto a mim, no seu 芒mago, O Duplo 茅 uma s谩tira tr谩gico-c贸mica ao pequeno mundo da burocracia 鈥� um micro-mundo mesquinho e doentio capaz de tresloucar qualquer ente com um pingo de integridade e zelo 鈥� um mundo que Dostoyevsky retrata brilhantemente, num estilo marcadamente gogoliano鈥�

Mas como nada melhor que ler para crer, lego agora a palavra ao Mestre:

No seu desfort煤nio viu-se num espelho invertido, reconheceu-se e transferiu para o outro o que n茫o foi capaz de enfrentar em si pr贸prio, esperneou numa contenda ingl贸ria e claudicou lastimosamente por mais que eu lhe gritasse.
