I'm rating this strictly on the merits of it being pure food porn, real armchair chef stuff. I've no doubt the recipes are delicious, but they are all very time-intensive. Loved reading about the platinum-level service and history of the hotel, and I'd love to have tea there sometime, but that's about as much a fantasy as my taking three days to make a single layer cake. :)
The first time I went to London, I went into Claridge's to get out of the rain, and ended up spending part of the afternoon sitting in the lobby reading. Since then, staying at Claridge's has been a dream for me. Unfortunately, my budget tends to be more Holiday Inn than Claridge's. When I saw this cookbook, I wanted to see if I could recreate some of the delicious dishes I saw on the menu.
As a cook, I would rate myself as average. Most of these recipes are definitely special occasion, Sunday lunch type of fussy recipes. There are several recipes with luxury ingredients, and make larger quantities than I would need. This is no surprise; Claridge's is a luxury restaurant. I will need to improve my baking and pastry skills before trying most of these recipes. Still, there are many I have been able to try, with good results-the directions are quite clear.
The reason for only 4 stars is that this cookbook has several dishes with recipes within recipes. For example, the Blueberry Buns (p.28) requires you to make croissant dough, then pastry cream, then apricot glaze before being able to complete the recipe. This looks like an all day recipe; I am not prepared to spend my entire day making blueberry buns.
What this cookbook has done for me is not only motivate me to improve my skills, but also to realize the incredible complexity of the dishes served at Claridge's. If I am ever fortunate enough to be able to return to London and dine at Claridge's, I will appreciate it in an entirely different way.
As an aside, there is a recipe for a cheeseburger in the book (p.182). Does anyone actually go to such a gorgeous restaurant and order a cheeseburger? I mean, it looks like it would be a great cheeseburger, but...really?
I sought this book out because I saw a show about the Art Deco building Claridge's resides in. The recipes in this book are pretty detailed and involved (3 days to make croissants, anyone?) and, for me weren't really the point.
I wanted to read about the history of the hotel and the hospitality offered therein. This cookbook is more than a collection of recipes, it's an inside peek into one of the world's fanciest hotels! I loved the pictures of dishes, drinks, and ephemera.
I didn't make any of the recipes in this cookbook, but I definitely savored the content.

New bucket list destination! This book is full of charm and elegance. Little secrets like how to make creamy glossy scrambled eggs is a must read. The recipes are classics that pamper guests prepared with impeccable technique from scratch. Feeling the chef love translating to my kitchen, so very contagious.
