Politics of Place #3

Divided: Why We're Living in an Age of Walls

Rate this book
New from the No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Prisoners of Geography

We feel more divided than ever.
This riveting analysis tells you why.

Walls are going up. Nationalism and identity politics are on the rise once more. Thousands of miles of fences and barriers have been erected in the past ten years, and they are redefining our political landscape.

There are many reasons why we erect walls, because we are divided in many ways: wealth, race, religion, politics. In Europe the ruptures of the past decade threaten not only European unity, but in some countries liberal democracy itself. In China, the Party¡¯s need to contain the divisions wrought by capitalism will define the nation¡¯s future. In the USA the rationale for the Mexican border wall taps into the fear that the USA will no longer be a white majority country in the course of this century.

Understanding what has divided us, past and present, is essential to understanding much of what¡¯s going on in the world today. Covering China; the USA; Israel and Palestine; the Middle East; the Indian Subcontinent; Africa; Europe and the UK, bestselling author Tim Marshall presents a gripping and unflinching analysis of the fault lines that will shape our world for years to come.

¡®A timely and exhilarating clamber over the walls of history¡¯ ¨C Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads

¡°Striking words ¡ Tim Marshall performs the daunting, yet highly pertinent, task of trying to make sense of one of the biggest issues of our times: in a world that is increasingly globalised, a backlash apparently grows ever stronger. By taking a global view, Divided successfully brings some much-needed perspective¡± ¨C Northern Slant

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ database with this name.

Tim Marshall was Diplomatic Editor and foreign correspondent for Sky News. After thirty years' experience in news reporting and presenting, he left full time news journalism to concentrate on writing and analysis.

Originally from Leeds, Tim arrived at broadcasting from the road less traveled. Not a media studies or journalism graduate, in fact not a graduate at all, after a wholly unsuccessful career as a painter and decorator he worked his way through newsroom nightshifts, and unpaid stints as a researcher and runner before eventually securing himself a foothold on the first rung of the broadcasting career ladder.

After three years as IRN's Paris correspondent and extensive work for BBC radio and TV, Tim joined Sky News. Reporting from Europe, the USA and Asia, Tim became Middle East Correspondent based in Jerusalem.

Tim also reported in the field from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. He spent the majority of the 1999 Kosovo crisis in Belgrade, where he was one of the few western journalists who stayed on to report from one of the main targets of NATO bombing raids. Tim was in Kosovo to greet the NATO troops on the day they advanced into Pristina. In recent years he covered the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria.

He has written for many of the national newspapers including the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, and the Sunday Times.

I found the book somewhat shallow, especially compared to Prisoners of Geography. The book already feels dated, because it's full of examples over the last 2 years. The analysis is often missing, or is just way too obvious. The goal of spinning various political issues through the prism of "walls" often feels forced.

Nevertheless, Tim Marshall remains a master storyteller, without any pompousness, but with an easy and approachable language and style.

Absolutely loved this. I didn't finish it sooner because every page made me do a Google search to know more about a certain topic. In fact, I felt so ignorant at times; this book made me realize how much I still have to learn about what has already happened and what is currently happening in politics/society/culture worldwide.

A few reviews here point out how "outdated" this book is, which is absolutely ridiculous. It's a *book* on geopolitics; it's outdated even before it hits bookshelves. Meanwhile, Hong Kong is in a disarray, the Indian government has stripped Kashmir of its autonomy, and Brexit is still a chaotic, unresolved mess. It's impossible not to be outdated when we're talking about the present.

I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about geopolitics!

I really liked this. Marshall examines the shifting boundaries between societies around the world, including the rather fortified India¨CBangladesh border, the U.S.¨CMexico border, the overly porous boundaries between European states, the extremely militarized Israel¨CPalestine boundaries, China¡¯s internet-security walls, Africa¡¯s externally-imposed national borders, or the walls around North America¡¯s gated (or ¡°fortified¡±) communities. He respects the views of people who want controls on residence and economic or political activity in their communities. He highlights the benefits from increasing interchange of many kinds. He considers our temptations to just wall out the problems we¡¯re failing to solve. It¡¯s a clear-eyed, globe-wide look at our bounds of identity, trust, hardship, and opportunity. Just the kind of discussion we need in an age of both planetary integration and identity-oriented politics.

This was very painful to finish. The book tries to cover major world conflict zones in just 280 pages, resulting in rather shallow descriptions, none of the problems are covered in detail. If you read newspapers or watch news on a regular basis, then I don't recommend buying this book, it's a waste of money. However in case you would like a quick and brief overview of the current global political situation, this is the thing to read. And that's basically my second my reprimand - this book will become outdated very quickly.

Disappointing. Contrary to the official review posted on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, I felt this was ultimately not riveting. More a review of the evidence that we are living in an age of walls (how many, where, when) than an eye opening exploration of what¡¯s driving us to do so. 90% observation; 9% rather unremarkable explanation of cause; 1% ¡®Gosh, that makes me sit up and think¡¯.

I was intrigued to read this book because of an interview with the author Tim Marshall on a podcast discussing the same topic; the book did not disappoint.

The author does go on to explain the question of why we are living in an age of walls, and consequently the rise in nationalism and increasing support for conservative parties.
With the Great Wall of China as the starting point, the author goes on to describe and analyze the walls and divisions in the USA, the Middle East, Africa, Indian Subcontinent, Europe, and finally the UK.
This book was certainly an enlightening read for an amateur on world politics like me and I think would bring the readers back to the age-old question of "Us Vs. Them". The author also gives his view on the idea of a borderless world and further his solution to the problem of walls - "If we do not move more money to where most people are, many of them will try to move to where the money is."

All in all, a timely, enlightening, and deeply interesting read.
I would recommend it to all who are intrigued by the question the author has attempted to answer.

Finally completed my 2022 Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ challenge by introducing myself to the topic of geopolitics through Divided by Tim Marshal. The first impression about this book comes to how accesible the explanation that someone who is clueless about the politic issue around the world like me can digest it very easily.

But since it is only 280 pages, many world issues in this book are described very shallow. And I do sometimes feel that he was a bit struggling to mantain being neutral when describing the issue. Leaving me feeling a bit "accused" as a muslim and also immigrant on the European country. Nevertheless this also help me to understand a bit how European seeing people like me. So, it kinds of help me not to take everything personally in the future ?

To close this (almost ranting) review, I would like to cite my favourite idea stated in the book, that

"Truth will always depends on which part of the wall you are currently standing"

And combined with my favourite podcast on How to be A Better Human, I think the problem about this wall can be at least tackled by us trying to be the wall. That, instead of accusing people standing on the different side of the wall as someone who is wrong, we can just stand there and see them from the point of view of the wall. Therefore we can see side by side two different societies with their own color and identity.

Or.... Maybe the better way to tackle this problem is by not building a wall at all at the first place? Well... Perhaps.

Rozdelen? svet je skvel¨¢ kniha a odpor¨²?am ju v?etk?m, ktor?ch zauj¨ªma p?vod a kontext najz¨¢va?nej?¨ªch s¨²?asn?ch svetov?ch konfliktov. Tie najni?ivej?ie s¨²:

1. negramotnos?/n¨ªzka ¨²rove¨¾ vzdelania,
2. n¨¢bo?ensk? fanatizmus,
3. moc pe¨¾az¨ª,
4. zmena kl¨ªmy a s ¨¾ou spojen¨¦ pr¨ªrodn¨¦ katastrofy,
5. polarizovanie spolo?nosti, rozde?ovanie, roztrie??ovanie.

Doslova.

My na Slovensku m??eme by? ve?mi radi, ?e tu m¨¢me relat¨ªvny pokoj. (najm? body 1, 3 a 5). A ke? si to nepostr¨¢?ime, m??eme sa ?ahko ocitn¨²? v poriadnej ?lamastike.

¡°We are seeing walls being built along borders everywhere. Despite globalization and advances in technology, we seem to be feeling more divided than ever. Thousands of miles of walls and fences have gone up around the world in the twenty-first century. At least 65 countries, more than a third of the world¡¯s nation states, have built barriers along their borders; half of those erected since the Second World War sprang up between 2000 and now.¡±

Walls like borders are porous, unpredictable entities that are always subject to changes of any kind from many outside influences. In 2018 when we think of walls, most people will find it hard to ignore Trump¡¯s planned construction for the Mexican border, but Marshall makes a very interesting point when he casts back to the early 2000s when the US Congress approved the Secure Fence Act, agreeing that another 700 miles could be built- among those voting for the measure were Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. When Obama came to power, there were over 600 miles of barrier, and he kept building, extending the fence, in some cases double and triple layering it. During Obama¡¯s time in office there was also an increase in the removal of illegal immigrants compared to the Bush years.

¡°Division shapes politics at every level-the personal, local, national and international. It¡¯s essential to be aware of what has divided us, and what continues to do so, in order to understand what¡¯s going on in the world today.¡± Another irony is that Mexico itself has incredibly strict laws regarding immigration, and annually deports more people than the US. It is tougher on immigrants than the US, in some cases you can be jailed for up to 10 years if you are caught trying to get into Mexico a second time.

Marshall doesn¡¯t just look at physical walls like the Berlin and Mexican ones, he also explores social and class divisions within countries, covering more obvious cases like Israel and Palestine, to the insidious culture within the US, where ¡°One study in 1997 estimated that by then the USA had 20¡¯000 gated communities housing 3 million residents.¡± Though perhaps the most shocking and widespread division of all, is the one that dictates the ruling classes of the second largest populated country in the world. The Indian caste system dates back more than 3¡¯000 years, and as Marshall explains, ¡°Tens of millions of people are denied basic human rights, not by law but by culture. This is not the image of India most people have. Generations of tourists and student backpackers return from India infused with the spirit of Hindusim, which promotes friendliness, non-violence, spiritualism and vegetarianism. Few see that alongside that is one of the most degrading social systems on the planet.¡±

He also takes a look at immigration in the UK from a more balanced and refreshing view, concluding, ¡°It¡¯s ironic that often the same type of person who decries middle-class ¡®gentrification¡¯ of a working class area, and who understands how the working class might not exactly embrace such change, is often quick to criticize people who are uneasy about the ways in which immigration can alter a neighbourhood. ¡®Gentrification¡¯ is sometimes even called ¡®social cleansing¡¯, while immigration is termed ¡®diversification¡¯. What is almost always true is that many of those using these terms are less affected by them than those living on the spot. To dismiss people who enjoyed their relatively homogenous cultures and who are now unsure of their place in the world merely drives them into the arms of those who would exploit their anxieties-the real bigots.¡±

Another interesting fact about this book is that when you look back into the origins of so much of the world¡¯s political strife, you can trace it back to the greedy expansionism and empire building of the leading European nations, whose murder, rape and theft of the lands continues to punish hundreds of millions all around the world, and ironically it has come boomeranging back to them in the shape of immigrants seeking asylum for many wars that were initially caused by European business and political interest, whether bankrolling dictators, murdering democratically elected leaders, selling them weapons to bomb civilians, or creating the contentious borders to stir up permanent tension and conflict.

This is another short but highly informative book on geography/current political affairs by Marshall. I enjoy his style, it¡¯s simple without being simplistic and he wears his reading lightly. His humour has notably been toned right down this time round, but you can still see glimpses of it here and there, which helps lighten the tone now and then. We are given some really interesting insights into some volatile regions and some controversial subjects all told in an accessible and clear way that is sure to be of interest to most people with a curiosity about current global politics.

Pidin Marshallin Maantieteen vangeista ja siihen verrattuna Jaettu maapallo j?i v?h?n pintapuoliseksi. K?sitelt?v?t teemat olivat kyll? mielenkiintoisia, mutta analyysit tuntuivat jotenkin j??v?n lyhyiksi. Huomasin my?s esimerkiksi kaipaavani analyysien tueksi enemm?n visualisoitua statistiikkaa tai vaikka niit? karttoja, joita Maantieteen vangeissakin hy?dynnettiin.

E prima o poi approder¨° a qualche piccola risposta.

This book was a great (and accessible) introduction to geo-politics. I liked that Marshall situated the nuances underlining the rise of nationalism and identity politics within a regional and historical framework, instead of painting both with a broad brush. Whilst he still highlighted the shortfalls of both movements, I also learnt a lot about the symbiotic relationship between the two.

It is difficult to condense a global history of national and international conflicts within 280 pages, but I think he did it quite well. There is a lot of focus on political events in the 2010s, and with reason, but including some more historical context would have made for a more comprehensive understanding of regional affairs that are fairly niche. For example, ethno-national divisions in China and Europe today are rooted in an intricate history (the latter also embroiled in a colonial legacy), which was sometimes glossed over.

Overall, though, I'd recommend this to anyone interested in the concept of 'borders', as a good toe-dip in the sea of IR.

Very similar to his other books, such as Prisoners of Geography, it gives an interesting outlook on geopolitics. The book ends with an interesting conclusion on the benefits and drawbacks of a world of walls and borders

The best part of this book is undoubtedly the cover design, when the winter sunlight is reflected from the metallic blue font, I feel all the problems that division¡¯s have in the world simply melt away.

The worst part of the book is that it is sometimes sympathetic to nationalism that often propagates xenophobic suspicions of the ¡®other¡¯. However, to counter my own observation, an understanding of nationalism is paramount to understanding the fears that people hold about the other side of the divide, whether that be proverbial or a literal wall (or fence if your name is a colloquialism for flatulence (god I hate that guy)).

Another downside to the book is Tim¡¯s use of ¡®an historical event¡¯ which is just wrong. Come on man.

Overall I don¡¯t think Lucy would enjoy this book as it focuses on the hate of the other side of the wall and that¡¯s just not how she rolls.

Marshall reviews and explains the conflicts around the world that have resulted in walls being built and borders being reinforced. Written in 2018, he explores the violence and poverty that spur migration and wall building.

Why I started this book: Trying to listen to the books that I have purchased... and this one still speaks to me.

Why I finished it: Great to put Trump's wall into global and historic perspective. I thought that he was a larger outlier than he was. I still don't agree with him, but it was interesting to see all the many walls that countries are building (or have built) over the world to stop the poor from migrating. I'm looking at you Bangladesh and India...
