کتاب درباره� یک خانواده آلمانی است که چگونگی رویارویی آن‌ه� را با انقلاب بولیوی بیان می‌کن�. خانواده‌ا� پنج نفره که پدر کارگردان است و سه دختر دارد. کتاب درباره� جنگ جهانی دوم و شکست آلمان‌هاس� و اینکه چگونه توانسته زندگی یک خانواده را تحت تاثیر قرار بده. در حالیکه برش‌های� از اتفاقات اجتماعی و عاشقانه� شخصیت‌ها� داستان را هم میفهمیم.
من کتاب را به صورت صوتی گوش دادم و واقعا دلنشین بود.

This is a very strange book - and to be honest I don't like it. The writing is clear, minimalist - I would even say beautifully clear, I suppose like Leni Riefenstahl's films. Fortunately I know who this person is - I had a friend in the same Department, of Comparative Literature, Film and Religion. Gerry was in the film section and being his friend I benefitted immensely from going to all the screenings and festivals of 'Arty Films' - one memorable one was Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia 1936, Berlin. She was Hitler's propaganda director. Her films are art - mesmerising and very beautiful.
In Hasbun's story - Hans Ertl, the father, the patriarch of the German family we follow, has fled with his family to La Paz, Bolivia to begin a new life - 1955. Hans Ertl was Riefenstahl's right-hand-man, her principal cameraman. Ertl had also made a name for himself as an explorer.
At this point I decided to check Wikipedia - Hans Ertl, cinematographer and mountaineer also famous for being the father of Monika Ertl, the Communist guerilla fighter who assassinated 'Toto' Quintanilla. He was the minister who requested Che Guevara's hands - as proof of his death.
In Hasbun's story Quintanilla is also responsible for Inti's brutal death - Monika's lover. Inti was one of the guerilla leaders and a key guard for Guevara.
There is a disclaimer at the front of Hasbun's book - which I probably should have paid more attention to:
Although inspired by historical figures, this novel is a work of fiction. As such, it is not, nor does it attempt to be, a faithful portrait of any member of the Ertl family or the other characters who appear in its pages.
The book looks and reads like a work of fiction - and that is how I read it. I noted Reifenstahl's name, but did not know until I had completed it that Hans Ertl is also very much a real person, as is Monika, her two sisters, and their mother, wife to Hans, who died from liver cancer in 1958.
Have a look at that Google Page: - Hans Ertl - German mountaineer; and you can understand why Hasbun wanted to reconstruct the inside story of the family. Google also says that Hans lost out on receiving a major award in Germany, and was madly in love with Riefenstahl.
I suppose I want to throw my hands in the air at this point and proclaim "Truth is stranger than fiction." And again I suppose that is the writer's point - that writers construct truths - their fictions as alternatives to the official sources question the reality, the veracity of "official". As we know there are many truths. Hasbun uses several narrators, who have access to the same basic material to tell his story.
I think seeing as it is presented as 'a work of fiction' I am also allowed a personal response. It left me cold. I admired it - I was interested that a male writer should take pains to write from the perspective, primarily, of the three daughters, Monika, Heidi and Trixi - and present their personal truths, but still - the economy of his writing - allowing him to cover that much history - German and Bolivian in a matter of 145 pages - left me completely cold.
Three stars? Hard to rate. Cold and beautiful - like Ertl and Riefenstahl's films.

What a strange, mysterious, deeply compelling book. I highly recommend that people look up the history behind the characters on Wikipedia (even though the novel bluntly advises us that the novel "is not, nor does it attempt to be, a faithful portrait of any member of the Erlt family"). Still, though - even though if little of the history appears in the book (Nazis helping the CIA hunt down Che Guevara?!) - what a story!! The story that DOES appear in the book took a while for me to get into (I started the book and put it down at least two times) but once I knew the history that helped a lot. I read somewhere that the book was initially a lot longer, but the author cut it down to its bare bones. What a brave choice!! The story in here could have easily been fattened up to 300 pages, but as is, it works as a strange kind of poetry in its thinness. I underlined so many sentences in this book, and the haunting image of the final chapter, in which workers are hired to dig what is most likely a grave, will stay with me for a while. Not an easy read, but if you're interested in guerrilla stories, or Latin America of the 60s, a highly recommended one.

Leggo che Andarsene è “un denso, intrigante romanzo che unisce mirabilmente realtà storica e finzione letteraria. Un efficace montaggio di episodi e voci permette di seguire le vicende della famiglia Ertl dagli anni Cinquanta agli anni Settanta…�
Caspita!, mi dico. Hans Ertl, è quel cameramen tedesco al seguito della regista di regime Riefenstahl (nota per i suoi film di propaganda nazista, fra cui il famoso sui giochi olimpici del 1936, “Olympia�) infangato dal nazismo che negli anni Cinquanta lasciò la Germania e si stabilì in Bolivia con la famiglia: moglie e tre figlie. E Hans Ertl è il padre di quella Monika Ertl che si unì all’ELN (Esercito di Liberazione Nazionale) dopo la morte di Ernesto Guevara, che nel �71 attraversò l’Atlantico, si recò ad Amburgo per vendicare il guerrigliero ammazzando il console boliviano colonnello Roberto Quintanilla Pereira, responsabile dell’amputazione delle mani del Che dopo la sua uccisione. Due anni dopo Monika cadde in un’imboscata architettata da Klaus Barbie, amico di Hans, conosciuto nell’ambiente nazista come “macellaio di Lione�.
Troverò molto, penso. Realtà storica e finzione letteraria, racconto corale, saga familiare, storia di affetti e solitudini.
Credevo.

Premesso che "andarsene " è un verbo che ultimamente mi sfreccia in testa di frequente 😂... la lettura del libro di Hasbun mi ha lasciato un senso di incompletezza, forse data l'importanza di quando narrato lo vedevo bene come un bel polpettone .
Ammetto anche che a volte il modo di narrare mi ha confusa un po' e sono dovuta tornare sui miei passi per riprendere il filo.
Notevoli però le figure delle donne, specialmente quelle di Monika che sacrifica tutto per il proprio ideale e anche quella della mamma che cerca disperatamente di tenere unita la famiglia nonostante le distruttive manie di grandezza del marito..
Questo passo però mi è piaciuto molto, dolorosamente vero:
“Furono i peggiori anni della mia vita e la mia unica consolazione era dirmi che lontano da lì era possibile ricominciare. Furono anni devastanti e la mia reazione, dovunque fossi, una volta dopo l'altra, era obbligarmi a pensare questo.
Poi mi diedi per vinta.
Non è vero che la memoria è un posto sicuro. Anche lì le cose si deformano e si perdono. Anche lì finiamo per allontanarci dalle persone che più amiamo"
Nel complesso tre stelle.

کتابی کم حجم اما خوب، داستان مستند گونه ای که از یک خانواده آلمانی روایت میشه که به بولیوی مهاجرت کردند.
هانس اِرتل فیلم‌بردار� صاحب‌سب� است که اغلب فیلم‌ها� «لنی ریفنشتال»، مستندساز صاحب‌نا� آلمانی را فیلم‌بردار� کرده است. ریفنشتال با چند فیلم درخشان نامش را در تاریخ سینمای مستند جهان ثبت کرده است، اما فیلم‌ها� شاخص او از جمله «پیروزی اراده» و «المپیک» در جهت تبلیغ و بزرگ‌نمای� قدرت آلمان نازی ساخته شده بودند. «پیروزی اراده» فیلمی است در توصیف ارتش آلمان نازی و چنان تصویر شکست‌ناپذیر� از آن ارائه می‌کن� که تماشای آن لرزه بر اندام ارتش‌ها� متفقین می‌انداخ�. بخش قابل‌توجه� از قدرت این فیلم‌ه� مدیون فیلم‌بردار� درخشان اِرتل است. از همین‌ر� است که در پی شکست نازی‌ها� هرچند همچون ریفنشتال محاکمه و زندانی نمی‌شود� به‌کل� از صنعت سینمای آلمان کنار گذاشته می‌شو�. تصمیم خانوادهٔ اِرتل برای مهاجرت به بولیوی، سرزمینی که در آن هیچ‌ک� آن‌ه� را نمی‌شناسد� به همین دلیل بوده است.

“Andarsene�, del boliviano Rodrigo Hasbùn, è un racconto che colloca eventi reali in una cornice immaginaria.
I personaggi reali sono i componenti della famiglia Ertl.
Hans Ertl fu il cameraman di Helene Bertha Amalie Riefenstahl detta Leni (la regista per eccellenza del Terzo Reich e intima di Hitler stesso), soprannominato «il fotografo di Rommel» perché, a quanto pare, il generale lo prediligeva.
Negli anni �50 dalla Germania si trasferisce con moglie e tre figlie in Bolivia.
In quegli anni la via che porta al Sud America è particolarmente battuta dai nazisti in cerca di panni puliti da indossare: è la via poi denominata –per l’appunto- «la rotta dei topi».
Comincia così un concerto di voci.
Il primo attacco è della figlia Heidi, la figlia di mezzo, che comincia col presentarci gli altri componenti della famiglia.
Si ritrovano a tavola: quel territorio domestico dove una famiglia si raccoglie e si racconta separandosi e confrontandosi col mondo esterno.
Hans è appena tornato dal Pakistan e precisamente dal Nanga Parbat pronto a fare il resoconto delle sue ultime avventure. Perché Hans era così, neanche il tempo di disfare i bagagli e pronto già a ripartire.
� Eravamo il suo clan, le donne che lo aspettavano, fino ad allora sempre a Monaco e adesso a La Paz ormai da un anno e mezzo. Andarsene, era questo che papà sapeva fare meglio, andarsene ma anche tornare, come un soldato sempre in guerra, giusto il tempo di radunare le forze per andarsene una volta ancora. Di solito succedeva dopo qualche mese di quiete. Quella volta, proprio dopo essersi lamentato dell'alpinismo, con la bocca mezza piena, buttò lì che presto sarebbe partito alla ricerca di Paitití, un'antica città inca…�
Un uomo dalle mille risorse: documentarista, alpinista, archeologo e molto altro.
Torna e vuole già andarsene.
Probabilmente fu insofferente alla vita coniugale ma d’altra parte qui la moglie Aurelia è l’unica statica: la sua figura è evanescente come il fumo delle tante sigarette che si accende.
Ma di lei non occorre curarsi perché esce presto di scena e le poche cose che sappiamo sono raccontate da Beatrix detta Trixi, la piccola di casa.
Il fulcro di tutta la storia, tuttavia, è la figlia maggiore e prediletta da Hans: Monika.
Affascinante, caparbia e pronta all’azione.
Con il padre ha in comune l’inclinazione al congedo ma se Hans fu accondiscendente e collaborazionista col nazismo (pare � e stranamente- che non si sia mai tesserato. Dato comunque trascurabile e non sufficiente a lavarne le colpe), la figlia scelse la fazione opposta fino a diventare una militante dell’ENL: l’Esercito di Liberazione che in Bolivia seguì la strada tracciata dal mitico Guevara.
Andarsene, dunque, non è più solo un movimento fisico ma un allontanamento da tutto ciò che ha visto e vissuto durante la sua vita.
Monika diventa, pertanto, Imilla.
Per vendicare la morte del Che -e degli altri compagni catturati, uccisi e torturati- Monika il 1°aprile 1971 si reca sotto mentite spoglie ad Amburgo dove uccide (con una pistola comprata da Giangiacomo Feltrinelli!) il console Roberto Quintamilla Pereira detto Toto, colui che oltraggiò il cadavere già fucilato del combattente argentino amputandogli le mani.
Non tutto questo è raccontato nel romanzo di Hasbùn; qui si cerca di dare risalto alle emozioni di ogni componente della famiglia.
Come ogni romanzo corale si rappresentano delle solitudini: un coro che si rispetti, però, necessita di armonia.
Questo concerto di voci, invece, stona e non perché gli strumenti siano male accordati ma perchè la mano di chi dirige non guida a dovere. Ne risulta una generale sensazione di confusione ed è un gran peccato.
Un peccato perché la famiglia Ertl offre molti elementi su cui intessere una storia.
Hasbùn ha intenzionalmente deciso di trascurare ogni accenno al passato nazista.
Passato che comunque aveva i suoi riverberi anche nella vita boliviana dal momento che casa Ertl era frequentata da personaggi legati al Terzo Reich: fra questi è assodato ci fosse Klaus Barbie che entrò poi a far parte nei servizi segreti boliviani e, con molta probabilità, fu invischiato nella cattura ed uccisione di Monika.
Un gran peccato perché questa storia meritava qualcosa di più.

Da scrittore, quale tra le tre sorelle ha richiesto maggior lavoro?
Monika è la più misteriosa, la più difficile, credo di non averla decifrata a pieno neanche adesso, ed è passato del tempo da quando ho terminato il libro.. Ma devo confessare che non ho faticato troppo per scrivere Andarsene: ho sentito subito le voci dei protagonisti.

Hans è appena tornato dal Pakistan e precisamente dal Nanga Parbat pronto a fare il resoconto delle sue ultime avventure. Perché Hans era così, neanche il tempo di disfare i bagagli e pronto già a ripartire.
� Eravamo il suo clan, le donne che lo aspettavano, fino ad allora sempre a Monaco e adesso a La Paz ormai da un anno e mezzo. Andarsene, era questo che papà sapeva fare meglio, andarsene ma anche tornare, come un soldato sempre in guerra, giusto il tempo di radunare le forze per andarsene una volta ancora. Di solito succedeva dopo qualche mese di quiete. Quella volta, proprio dopo essersi lamentato dell'alpinismo, con la bocca mezza piena, buttò lì che presto sarebbe partito alla ricerca di Paitití, un'antica città inca…�
Un uomo dalle mille risorse: documentarista, alpinista, archeologo e molto altro.
Torna e vuole già andarsene.
Probabilmente fu insofferente alla vita coniugale ma d’altra parte qui la moglie Aurelia è l’unica statica: la sua figura è evanescente come il fumo delle tante sigarette che si accende.
Ma di lei non occorre curarsi perché esce presto di scena e le poche cose che sappiamo sono raccontate da Beatrix detta Trixi, la piccola di casa.
Il fulcro di tutta la storia, tuttavia, è la figlia maggiore e prediletta da Hans: Monika.
Affascinante, caparbia e pronta all’azione.
Con il padre ha in comune l’inclinazione al congedo ma se Hans fu accondiscendente e collaborazionista col nazismo (pare � e stranamente- che non si sia mai tesserato. Dato comunque trascurabile e non sufficiente a lavarne le colpe), la figlia scelse la fazione opposta fino a diventare una militante dell’ENL: l’Esercito di Liberazione che in Bolivia seguì la strada tracciata dal mitico Guevara.
Andarsene, dunque, non è più solo un movimento fisico ma un allontanamento da tutto ciò che ha visto e vissuto durante la sua vita.
Monika diventa, pertanto, Imilla.
Per vendicare la morte del Che -e degli altri compagni catturati, uccisi e torturati- Monika il 1°aprile 1971 si reca sotto mentite spoglie ad Amburgo dove uccide (con una pistola comprata da Giangiacomo Feltrinelli!) il console Roberto Quintamilla Pereira detto Toto, colui che oltraggiò il cadavere già fucilato del combattente argentino amputandogli le mani.
Non tutto questo è raccontato nel romanzo di Hasbùn; qui si cerca di dare risalto alle emozioni di ogni componente della famiglia.
Come ogni romanzo corale si rappresentano delle solitudini: un coro che si rispetti, però, necessita di armonia.
Questo concerto di voci, invece, stona e non perché gli strumenti siano male accordati ma perchè la mano di chi dirige non guida a dovere. Ne risulta una generale sensazione di confusione ed è un gran peccato.
Un peccato perché la famiglia Ertl offre molti elementi su cui intessere una storia.
Hasbùn ha intenzionalmente deciso di trascurare ogni accenno al passato nazista.
Passato che comunque aveva i suoi riverberi anche nella vita boliviana dal momento che casa Ertl era frequentata da personaggi legati al Terzo Reich: fra questi è assodato ci fosse Klaus Barbie che entrò poi a far parte nei servizi segreti boliviani e, con molta probabilità, fu invischiato nella cattura ed uccisione di Monika.
Un gran peccato perché questa storia meritava qualcosa di più.

Monika è la più misteriosa, la più difficile, credo di non averla decifrata a pieno neanche adesso, ed è passato del tempo da quando ho terminato il libro.. Ma devo confessare che non ho faticato troppo per scrivere Andarsene: ho sentito subito le voci dei protagonisti.

An extraordinary short novel; at once feeling like the bones of a much longer work, and yet complete as it is. I don’t know anything about the real family it was based on � Germans who left Europe after WW2 and built new lives in Bolivia.
Sometimes you meet someone and they tell you a story. They don’t tell you everything but you feel you have touched something real, and perhaps ultimately unknowable. You have been touched by the encounter even if you don’t know why. Real life is mysterious and incomplete.
That is the feeling of reading this book.

Il libro racconta sprazzi di vita di Hans, della moglie e delle tre figlie. Nella realtà Hans Ertl era un ex-nazista autore di film di propaganda del regime, ben introdotto ai gerarchi nazisti tanto da meritarsi l'appellativo di "fotografo di Rommel". Si tratta di uno dei tanti nazisti che, alla fine della guerra e con le tasche ben gonfie dal frutto di furti e rapine, ingoiarono disinvolti l'orgogliosa impudenza ostentata fino ad allora per fuggire in Sudamerica a rifarsi una nuova vita. Qui Hans conserva il suo atteggiamento da dominatore, organizza esplorazioni in grande ("c'erano venticinque mule ad aspettarci e caricammo ognuna con quarantasei chili esatti di bagagli"). La megalomania lo spinge addirittura a dar fuoco all'accampamento per esigenze cinematografiche, e mentre tutto brucia e le persone si affannano a salvare il salvabile, lui filma "in preda all'entusiasmo". Le finanze accumulate dovevano essere cospicue dato che, dopo il sostanziale fallimento delle spedizioni, gli restarono ancora abbastanza quattrini per comprarsi una grande tenuta da 2000 ettari. Un personaggio irritante. Tanto irritante lui quanto sprovvedute le tre figlie, che accettano il trapianto in Bolivia senza fare e farsi troppe domande. A un certo punto Monika, forse per lavare più o meno consciamente le colpe del padre, si schiera dalla parte dei guerriglieri. Poi la famiglia si disgrega e tutti sono vittime della solitudine che, in sostanza, si sono auto-costruiti.
Non sono riuscito a entrare nella storia né nei personaggi. Manca un minimo di inquadramento storico-politico e le vicende della famiglia non subiscono alcuna influenza esterna, fluttuano sospese e slegate. Forse ciò si spiega ipotizzando che il libro, scritto da un boliviano, sia stato scritto per i boliviani che conoscono la storia del loro Paese. Le varie parti non sono raccordate, c'è una cesura troppo netta tra la vita della famiglia in esilio e la guerra civile. La narrazione avviene in prima persona ad opera di personaggi diversi ma, salvo eccezioni, con registro uniforme. In qualche caso ci si deve arrovellare allo scopo di individuare il soggetto narrante. La narrazione è confusa ed è facile perdere il filo.

This is a stunning gem of a spare novel that delivers a punch through a turning of a phrase and the emotional intensity of the multiple narrators. I was attracted to this book by its photograph-like cover and the anticipation of reading a story set primarily in Bolivar. While the storyline is steeped in politics hovering in the background, it is the emotional turbulence of the characters as revealed by the narrators about themselves and other characters that had me intrigued as I read this this book in one sitting. Inspired by the lives of the Ertl family after the fled to Bolivia to start over after the collapse of Nazi Germany, the tumultuous times in Bolivia fueled the dynamics the unsettled family into unexpected directions apart from each other. A powerful testament to the times and expectations told with precision and poise that grabs the reader from start to finish. Looking forward to reading more by Rodrigo Hasbun.

Trigger warnings: mentions of torture, implications of Nazism. I think that's all?
I was hooked by the beginning of this tiny little book. It's about a German family living in Bolivia in the 1950s and 1960s, and the book begins with the father of the family leading an expedition to look for a lost city. Uh, YES.
From there, it covers the Bolivian revolution and the way that the various family members struggle with that.
And it was definitely an interesting and compelling read.
But.
It's only 160 pages. And in that time, it covers over 20 years and jumps between about five different protagonists and first, second AND third person narrations. Add in the fact that I know almost nothing about Bolivian history, and...this kind of made me feel stupid? So...yeah.
I was hooked by the beginning of this tiny little book. It's about a German family living in Bolivia in the 1950s and 1960s, and the book begins with the father of the family leading an expedition to look for a lost city. Uh, YES.
From there, it covers the Bolivian revolution and the way that the various family members struggle with that.

Concordo con le recensioni del mio gruppo di lettura: un'occasione persa.
Però: non è che ci si aspettasse troppo da un librino di 85 pagine (nell'edizione Kindle)? La storia era succosissima, poteva venirne fuori un romanzone, ma in 85 pagine copertine comprese? Ingenui noi a sperarlo!
Però anche da questo librino ho imparato cose: di Monika poco sapevo, di suo padre ho solo visto le riprese subacquee nel film della Leni (altro personaggio da romanzo!) del quale ho apprezzato la modernità. Che fosse sua figlia la vendicatrice del Che l'ho scoperto qui.
Rodrigo, ora che abbiamo letto il riassunto aspettiamo il romanzo intero: ne hai le capacità, dai, àpplicati!

Based on actual events, and set almost entirely in Bolivia, this is a sprawling novella, if there can be such a thing, in that it encompasses more than 30 years and attempts to tell the stories of five people’s lives during that time. In trying to take on so much, it is difficult to empathise or even be familiar with any of the characters. There is a lot of history crammed in as well.
Hans Ertl was a Nazi cameraman and although never a member of the party, fled with his wife and three daughters to South America in the late stages of the war as so many did. Having led an unsuccessful expedition in search of a legendary Inca city his previously happy family life deteriorates. The chapters are told from the point of view of the father and his daughters alternately as they become involved with the Bolivian Revolution in 1952, and the following period of political unrest to the 1967 revolution.
Having lived in South America for some years I found the novel of interest though it was not an easy read. I can’t help have the feeling the Hasbún has tried to do too much in such few pages and missed an opportunity of writing a more sympathetic and deeper account.

Maybe only 2.5, but there were moments of beauty so I’ll go with 3. I’m just not quite sure what to make of this very brief, albeit pretty intense novel. I was unfamiliar with the real life Ertl family when I started reading but was intrigued enough to do a little research. Knowing the backstory made this fiction treatment much more interesting, but it still wasn’t enough. This felt unfinished, like the pitch for a really interesting story that wasn’t quite developed.
I couldn’t help thinking of the Harrison Ford movie when he’s a missionary (I think) and drags his family through a jungle and goes insane. I just couldn’t get his face out of my mind.

Questo breve romanzo avrebbe dovuto intitolarsi «Perdersi» e non « Andarsene» perché i suoi personaggi cercano l'impossibile e mentre lo cercano si perdono.
Hans cerca la mitica città di Paititi e si perde nella follia.
Monika, Heidi e Trixi cercano qualcosa di ancor più leggendario : l'affetto......del padre, della madre, di un compagno ma si perdono negli anfratti della vita.
La madre aspetta in un tempo stagnante di fumo.
Ciascuno di loro insegue una chimera che lo condurrà all'autodistruzione.
Il romanzo termina in una fattoria chiamata «La Dolorosa», funesto ed inevitabile epilogo della famiglia Ertl.
Purtroppo Hasbùn suggerisce e sottintende più di quanto dice......peccato.

Μερικοί συγγραφείς προσπαθούν να πουν πολλά πράγματα με λίγες λέξεις, τολμούν να αποτυπώσουν μια ολόκληρη εποχή σε λίγες σελίδες, χωρίς να αναλώνονται σε ατελείωτες περιγραφές και κουραστικές λεπτομέρειες. Κάτι τέτοιο κατάφερε σε μεγάλο βαθμό και ο Βολιβιανός Ροδρίγο Ασμπούν, με τούτο το μικρό μυθιστόρημα, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε στα ελληνικά πριν από λίγες μέρες από τις εκδόσεις Πατάκη, και το οποίο διάβασα εν ριπή οφθαλμού.
Ο συγγραφέας συνδυάζει εξαιρετικά τη βιογραφία, τη μυθοπλασία και τα ιστορικά γεγονότα, καταφέρνοντας να δημιουργήσει ένα σχετικά συμπαγές χρονικό της οικογένειας Ερτλ από τη στιγμή που μετακόμισε στη Βολιβία, μετά το τέλος του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Ο Χανς Ερτλ, παλιός εικονολήπτης της Λένι Ρίφενσταλ, αγαπημένος κάμεραμαν του Έρβιν Ρόμελ, αρκετά γνωστός ορειβάτης και λάτρης της περιπέτειας. Η Μόνικα Ερτλ, μια νεαρή κοπέλα με πολλές ανησυχίες και έντονη διάθεση για δράση, η οποία μπλέκει με τις επαναστατικές ομάδες της Λατινικής Αμερικής, παίρνει εκδίκηση για τη δολοφονία του Τσε Γκεβάρα και έχει ένα τραγικό τέλος. Οι άλλες δυο κόρες της οικογένειας, που ζουν μια απλή ζωή. Και η γυναίκα του Χανς, που ίσως δεν έζησε όπως θα ήθελε και έφυγε νωρίς.
Η αλήθεια είναι ότι ο συγγραφέας κατάφερε να με βάλει στη διαδικασία να ψάξω για ώρες στο ίντερνετ διάφορες ιστορικές λεπτομέρειες για την οικογένεια Ερτλ και κατά συνέπεια για τους Ναζί, τις επαναστατικές ομάδες στη Λατινική Αμερική και όλες τις προσπάθειες τους για την αλλαγή των πραγμάτων, μέχρι που χάθηκα σε έναν κόσμο συναρπαστικό αλλά και παρανοϊκό. Πιστεύω ότι αυτό από μόνο του είναι ένα προσόν για το βιβλίο. Όσον αφορά τη γραφή, είναι πραγματικά πολύ ωραία, λιτή σε περιγραφές αλλά και αρκετά λυρική, με τον συγγραφέα να "παίζει" λιγάκι με το στιλ αφήγησης, εναλλάσσοντας συχνά τα αφηγηματικά πρόσωπα. Γενικά, πρόκειται για ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον και καλογραμμένο βιβλίο, με τα προτερήματα και τα μειονεκτήματα των λιτών μυθιστορημάτων που ασχολούνται με κάποια μεγάλα και σημαντικά θέματα.

Inconcludente
Libro caotico, per repentini cambi di narratori interni, la cui identità ho faticato a ricostruire, in un paio di casi non ci son proprio riuscita.Più che un romanzo, mi è parso un abbozzo, con personaggi e vicende accennati, quasi tutto lasciato all'impegno del lettore nel ricostruire, sviluppare, sciogliere.
Da un libro mi aspetto che mi coinvolga, mi emozioni, mi dia da pensare, non che mi affidi l'incarico di scriverlo io quel libro.
Salvo solo qualcosa di questo breve romanzo, delle sensazioni, più che altro: bastano appena a farmi tributare due stelle.

Un'occasione persa. Una saga familiare in stile sudamericano che si interseca con la Storia, quella con la S maiuscola: la fuga dalla Germania dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, la nuova vita in sudamerica, la formazione della resistenza comunista alle dittature, la volontà di creare un mondo nuovo con tutte le sue contraddizioni e molti altri spunti che, se approfonditi, avrebbero potuto concorrere alla creazione di un grande romanzo.
Ma appunto qui i fatti vengono solamente citati: non c'è vero coinvolgimento ne tensione verso una qualsiasi profondità. Anche la vicenda familiare sembra narrata quasi en passant, riportando qualche avvenimento importante, senza mai avvicinarsi troppo al soggetto.
Anche la scelta di raccontare la storia da diversi punti di vista non mi pare vincente: spezzetta troppo la narrazione, già povera, e la rende ancora più confusa.
Godibile, come una ricognizione a volo d'uccello, dall'alto, dove però si sente la mancanza della vicinanza, della carne viva.
Ma appunto qui i fatti vengono solamente citati: non c'è vero coinvolgimento ne tensione verso una qualsiasi profondità. Anche la vicenda familiare sembra narrata quasi en passant, riportando qualche avvenimento importante, senza mai avvicinarsi troppo al soggetto.
Anche la scelta di raccontare la storia da diversi punti di vista non mi pare vincente: spezzetta troppo la narrazione, già povera, e la rende ancora più confusa.

"A spare novel". Yup, so spare that it was like an empty box. There's never a value, or value-laden sentence, about the Nazis who escaped to Bolivia. The patriarch, who had been Leni Riefenstahl's main cameraman, is drawn as a dream-filled adventurer. Swell guy. At one point in his "documentary"? he starts a huge fire, which rapidly becomes out of control but is doused by a sudden surprise downpour:
"He yelled like a man possessed, his arms stretched up to the sky. The rain was drenching his hair, beard, and clothes. 'Thank you!' he shouted. 'You're there! I see you! Thank you, you goddamn son of a bitch!'"
Presumably having summoned a higher power. Those clever Nazis.
The three daughters' lives are sketched. The eldest becomes a revolutionary in the years following Che's murder, successfully carrying out important and dangerous tasks. She is a part of a guerrilla effort aimed at socialist change in this country. But we are never really given a reason why change is necessary at all. Hasbun barely mentions the horrendous situation of the indigenous Bolivians; in fact he rather makes the revolutionaries silly and suicidal. He finds opportunity to make her seem weak:
"Being alone often meant losing her sense of order, and that idea scared her."
Hardly believable after she traveled across the world, entered a foreign consulate and shot the ambassador point blank. But...okayyyy, i'm suspending my disbelief here. For a second.
And the other two daughters? One smoked heavily and in describing the worst years of her life, consoles herself by believing that she could start again, far away. The other moved to Munich. That's pretty much what you get. Really, not worth the bother. Even for something as brief, as "spare" as this.

Questo e' sicuramente un libro a forte impatto emotivo, anche perche' si basa su una storia vera e cerca di analizzarne i principali protagonisti, e cioe' la famiglia Ertl:una famiglia sicuramente atipica, in quanto il padre era il cameraman favorito di Leni Riefensthal, e la figlia Monika la rivoluzionaria che uccise il colonnello boliviano che ordino' il taglio delle mani di Che Guevara. Tra padre e figlia si muovono gli altri componenti della famiglia: la madre che ha passato la vita ad aspettare il padre sempre in giro, con la Riefensthal prima e cercando citta' Incas dopo, la sorella Heidi che sogna ed ottiene una vita borghese nella patria tedesca, e l'altra sorella Trixi che osserva impotente il disfacimento della sua famiglia.
Il passato nazista del padre viene solo sfiorato ed anche il percorso di Monika viene narrato molto velocemente, l'intero libro e' breve ed ha un ritmo molto veloce, per cui molte informazioni sulla famiglia devono essere reperite autonomamente online per avere un quadro completo della famiglia Ertl.
In complesso questo libro mi e' sembrato un'ottima sceneggiatura per un film o una piece teatrale, come libro mi sembra ancora in embrione, come se fosse una traccia, sicuramente molto valida, ma da sviluppare ulteriormente.
Il passato nazista del padre viene solo sfiorato ed anche il percorso di Monika viene narrato molto velocemente, l'intero libro e' breve ed ha un ritmo molto veloce, per cui molte informazioni sulla famiglia devono essere reperite autonomamente online per avere un quadro completo della famiglia Ertl.
In complesso questo libro mi e' sembrato un'ottima sceneggiatura per un film o una piece teatrale, come libro mi sembra ancora in embrione, come se fosse una traccia, sicuramente molto valida, ma da sviluppare ulteriormente.

Ci sono persone che divorano letteralmente la propria vita. "Andarsene" è una sorta di biografia romanzata di persone come queste. La famiglia Ertl. Hans Ertl è stato un filonazista, cameramen dei film propagandistici di Leni Riefensthal e delle campagne militari di Rommel. Dopo la guerra si è trasferito con la famiglia in Bolivia, ha scalato il Nanga Parbat, ha organizzato spedizioni nella giungla alla ricerca di città perdute degli Inca, ha fondato l'enorme tenuta La Dolorosa. Ma il passato nazista del padre è stato riscattato dalla figlia Monika. La mitica guerrigliera tedesca dell'Esercito di Liberazione Nazionale boliviano, che nel 1971 vendicò la morte del Che giustiziando il suo assassino, Roberto Quintanilla Pereira, all'interno del consolato boliviano di Amburgo. Per poi essere torturata ed uccisa nella giungla dopo essere caduta in un'imboscata organizzata da Klaus Barbie. Una storia di vite eccezionali.

Interesante el proyecto de reconstruir la historia desde la perspectiva de varios miembros de una familia que existió en realidad, pero sin entrevistar a ninguno. Bien lograda en que el autor supo crear distintas voces para los personajes que dan testimonio de una época turbulenta . Y lo logra al nivel de Kingsolver en ¨Poisonwood Bible¨, está muy bien hecho. Algunos de los defectos que le veo se explicaron cuando una amiga me reveló que el autor había cortado la novela por un 50%-porque aun con un fondo histórico, encontré que había hechos que no se explicaban bien. No se lo recomiendo a nadie que no sepa absolutamente nada de lo que pasó con el Che en Bolivia. Pero para los que sí saben algo de la historia y la época, sí viene recomendado.

Después de esta ronda de libros que he leido, este es mi favorito. Me gustaro los personajes y la forma en la que uno iba sabiendo de su paradero. Me recordó mucho Umami por la dinámica familiar y de los personajes externos también.

1950s La Paz, Bolivia - the Ertl family emigrates from Germany. Hans Ertl, a cinematographer who worked with Leni Riefenstahl on several Nazi propaganda films, is no longer able to find work due to his past alliances and moves with his family to start again.
Written in sparse prose, focusing on 12 vignettes from different family members, we get the framework story of a family in a rapidly shifting environment.
As each character speaks, there's foreshadowing of 'an event' that occurs that changes everything. The reader gathers the breadcrumbs that lead to the defining event.
Hans, and his eldest daughter Monika are the main characters, with supporting roles from Hans' wife and other daughters. The family establishes in La Paz, Hans goes back to filmmaking and Monika follows in his footsteps. Into the 60s, Monika joins Che Guevara's ELN. Guerilla warfare becomes the driving force in her life... Leading to the event described by her family members, and later in Monika's own narrative.
The story happens in the margins - the space between the words on the page. This requires a little more of the reader, and possibly some extra research about the events and the historical figures involved.
Historical fiction can be a tricky game - especially when imagining inner thoughts and motivations of real people in a historical context. The events described in AFFECTIONS are modern and still in public memory and consciousness - and even then, the events are still charged with political animosity and the resulting criminal acts.
Leave your audience wanting more... at 140 pages, this one is much bigger than its size, it could have been much longer and detailed - there's rich soil for storytelling here. Hasbún chose the spare and quiet, and I liked this approach. Less is more with Affections.

There's an interesting father / daughter dynamic here. Both affected by the political forces they aligned with - for Hans, far-right Nazism, and for Monika, far-left Marxism.

Members of the family, and Hans Ertl himself deny ever "joining" the Nazi party and he denied this until his death in 2000. He was a camera man in Riefenstahl's Olympia film, and was also a photographer and camera man of Rommel's campaigns throughout North Africa.

Monika's (real) life is not as well-documented, other than the crime that lead to the international manhunt and time on the "Most Wanted" list after she planned and personally assassinated the politician who ordered Che Guevara's body mutilation after his death, cutting the hands from the corpse. She earned the title of "Che's Avenger" for the act, and was later killed, her body never recovered.

Family dynamics and the way history and your environment effect the very nature of your being is what this somewhat short story dwells upon. We are introduced to the Ertl family who have escaped to Bolivia following World War 2 where the father, Hans, was a cameraman for the filmmaker/propagandist Leni Riefenstahl. Hans, ever the one for fantastic ideas, embarks on a search enlisting two of his daughters, for the lost city of Paitití, resulting in disastrous consequences.
In Bolivia the political unrest ensuing allows for the rise of Che Guevara which one of Hans's daughters, Monika, follows and eventually becomes know as his "avenger." As one can imagine all does not end well for her.
This tale is a story of a family's dissolution through the path that each member follows. While some are left to follow foolhardy practices, others within the family are left to pick up the pieces of their actions. The time frame of the sixties and seventies with both their enthusiasm and violence are laid out in this tale. Sad but ultimately true, the concept that families fall apart when some of their members commit themselves to life's foolish paths holds true.
