Date of Birth: 1940

H. Jackson Brown, Jr. was an American author best-known for his book Life's Little Instruction Book which was a New York Times bestseller. Before becoming famous as a writer, Brown acted as a creative director of an advertising agency in Nashville, Tennessee. It was simple words of wisdom gathered from other people and his own experiences that made him a best-selling author.

Brown first published A Father's Book of Wisdom, which was quickly followed by P.S. I Love You, a collection of sayings and observations from his father and mother. Both were very popular and led to Life's Little Instruction Book, which was originally written as a going-away present for his college-bound son, Adam. This book contained 511 reminders about "how to live a happy and rewarding life" and became a phenomenal best-seller worldwide. It has logged more than two years on the New York Times best-seller list, including more than a year at the number one spot. Life's Little Instruction Book was the first book to ever occupy the number one spot on the New York Times best-seller list in both paperback and hardback formats simultaneously. Live and Learn and Pass It On followed and also became a New York Times best-seller.

Brown's books have been translated into 35 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. They have spawned calendars, posters, apparel items, daily journals, greeting cards, audiocassettes, screensavers and even fortune cookies. Brown is also said to receive thousands of letters from readers all over the world. Their content ranges from the simple, "I enjoyed your book and I read a page or two every night before I go to bed" to the humbling "your book convinced our family to adopt a special needs child."

Remarking on his books, Jackson has said, "Most of us know what we need to do to make our lives more fulfilled and useful, but sometimes we forget. My little books are gentle reminders of those simple things which, if done well and in a spirit of love, can significantly change our lives."

The idea behind this book is really cute (a dad writes down some advice for his son as he's going away to college). Since it was a personal gift, there are some things that I don't agree with (and there are a lot that are similar), but there are several that remind me of advice from my own parents and/or are things I'm trying to live by:

17. Live beneath your means.
19. Buy great books even if you never read them.
37. Make new friends but cherish the old ones.
41. Don't postpone joy.
42. Write "thank you" notes promptly.
60. Admit your mistakes.
84. Forget the Joneses.
94. Make it a habit to do nice things for people who'll never find out.
166. Avoid negative people.
175. Give people a second chance, but not a third.
178. Learn to recognize the inconsequential, then ignore it.
181. Wear out, don't rust out.
186. Be insatiably curious.
201. Don't carry a grudge.
213. Commit yourself to constant self-improvement.
252. Take good care of those you love.
275. Cut out complimentary newspaper articles about people you know and mail the articles to them with notes of congratulations.
276. Patronize local merchants even if it costs a bit more.
295. Keep expectations high.
300. Don't expect life to be fair.
304. Judge your success by the degree that you're enjoying peace, health, and love.
326. Remember that winners do what losers don't want to do.
332. Live your life as an exclamation, not an explanation.
356. Be there when people need you.
358. Be decisive even if it means you'll sometimes be wrong.
371. Just to see how it feels, for the next twenty-four hours refrain from criticizing anybody or anything.
375. Take charge of your attitude. Don't let someone else choose it for you.
407. Every once in a while, take the scenic route.
416. Don't procrastinate. Do what needs doing when it needs to be done.
452. Never compromise your integrity.
459. Don't use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.
496. Never buy something you don't need just because it's on sale.

And that's pretty much full circle...

After almost 4 months I am finally done reading this book! I am not very consistent with this one that's why it took me that long to finish it. Life's Little Instruction Book consist of over 1,560 tips and instruction about practical living. It's pretty cool to me actually that I wrote down the things that I liked and from 1,560 I wrote 385 tips. I didn't do it in one seating though. But I'm glad I read this. Learned a lot!

I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sure there are some to disagree with and the religious stuff is a waste of time, but that should be part of the point: to look at some of the flaws of the advice. Great way to talk to kids.

I enjoyed this little book a lot, it鈥檚 a great book to carry everywhere and jump around in.

There鈥檚 always something we can work on as we are always learning to be better people everyday. This little book is a great guide as it provides great advice from little things to big things. This book also inspired me to create my own list of rules of life and advice - Recommend!!

I liked it in the beginning but then began to realize I didn't agree with many of the things.
Some patterns were observed :

1. Lots of business tips. Clearly not for me.
2. Pleasing your wife. I don't intend to have one, so.
3. Raising children. Whatever
4. Religious stuff. Sigh.
5. Sexist undertones - mostly please-protect-weak-ladies stuff. Like stand up to let a lady sit.
6. Contradictions. "Live beneath your means" But then so many buy the best you can afford this, that.
7. Totally random, meaningless things.
8. Patriotism.

There were some good advices, certainly, but nothing you haven't heard before.

My favs:

26. If in a fight, hit first and hit hard.
30. Never buy a house without a fireplace.
34. Learn to identify the music of Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven.

99. Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures.
139. Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.
187. Measure people by the size of their hearts, not the size of their bank accounts.
235. Be willing to lose a battle in order to win the war.
273. Remember that overnight success usually takes about fifteen years.
435. Make a list of twenty-five things you want to experience before you die. Carry it in your wallet and refer to it often.

760. Champion your wife. Be her best friend and biggest fan.
817. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
876. Don't judge a man's wealth by how well he's dressed, but by how well his wife is dressed.
1078. Never forget that it takes only one person or one idea to change your life forever.

You already know if you like these kind of allegedly feel-good books, full of pithy suggestions/quotes.

If you've never read one of these Chicken-Soup-for-the-Soul kind of things, or have yet to accumulate much life wisdom, you might find some inspiration here. Heck, there are over 1,500 sayings to peruse.

Some are pretty good, a few are horrible and/or stupid 听 less than helpful, and several are contradictory or repetitive. Many are just common sense, or sayings you've heard before. And you do get a lot of 'em. I suppose it might even be entertaining to read this with your kids or teens (if you can get them off their phones long enough).

VERDICT: Unrateable. Not a life-changing 5-star deal for me personally. But nice to pass on to a friend who enjoys living in the light. Worth the 49 cents + tax I paid for it.

I really liked reading this book and it was interesting to know about what the author likes and dislikes, though I feel like it is aimed mainly at men, who have children (they should have at least a daughter and a son!) a wife, living in America (preferably in New York!) and though this is probaby how the author lives himself, I would have liked it more if he didn鈥檛 keep referring to these things. Of course, you can still read it if you are not any of the things listed above (like me: I am practically the very opposite!)

Gracias, Rebeca.

How can I express my gratitude toward the destiny that put such a book in my path !
Beautiful/deep/funny/short.. instructions from father to his son , full of wisdom and love .
Obviously , I recommend to read this book .

- Be insatiably curious. Ask "why" a lot.
- Spend less time worrying who's right, and more time deciding what's right.
- Cut out complimentary newspaper articles about people you know and mail the
articles to them with notes of congratulations

What I think is that this book has given me lots to think about. I have half a mind to transform it into a life's little checklist and cross the instructions off one by one. Some of these mentioned I'm proud to say I've already accomplished, but others are absolutely wonderful ideas and suggestions that I hope to follow one day. Basically, this book made me smile and more than once while I was reading it. There's a lot of truth and wisdom found within its binding. Even if you never read it cover to cover, one can open it up to any page and gain insight from a single statement. Don't pass this up! That's what I think.

This book is really life-changing and something everyone can relate to because of the advice it gives. The Author of the book was really nervous about his son going to high school he wrote this book, so his son could have some good dad advice. I would rate this book 4 stars because, it鈥檚 a book you can really relate to, and it can also make you grow as a person. I can personally say that I have really changed my way of think and acting after reading this book. I really liked all the content the book had, but there was a specific quote that really made me reflect on the way I live my life, and that is: 鈥淒o the right thing, regardless of what others think. This is a quote we hear all the time but, we don鈥檛 really put much attention to it, and I can say that reflecting on it, completely changed me. This book has a lot I can relate to my hero鈥檚 journey. I鈥檓 a teen with a lot ahead of me, and being able to study things that will happen to me in the future beforehand, is amazing. This book didn鈥檛 really change me as a reader but it definitely set a standard for all the books that are about self-growth. I would definitely recommend people reading this book, it鈥檚 really good and you will not regret reading it.
