This book offers an entire world of taboo personalities that people wish to disown about themselves based on who we think we are. The imagination of "the self." The basis of this book is that we are all, the things we love about ourselves and the things we dislike. Yet, one in the same, we are all of them. This book is a way to find spiritual balance in life and gives you a greater (if not the greatest) defined definition of going with the flow and letting go and bringing in parts of yourself you may be fearful to let out. Yet, like a caged animal for so long, when let out without awareness, becomes wild. This book brings in an awareness that these parts of ourselves we disown still need to be loved and honored so we can let them out in a balanced way. If you're interested in energy and expanding your consciousness, this book is remarkable and fascinating to read and explore.
The self is a not a homogeneous being, but a collection of different sub-personalities who sometimes complement or contradict each other. The idea is to be aware.
This is a very accessible book that is useful for people interested in learning about defining aspects of their self. It lends itself well to Voice Dialoguing techniques. It is quite inspirational in parts with excerpts from therapy sessions and examples. There is a particular emphasis on not only the ‘critic, but also the ‘pusher. The book also looks at disowned parts of self that may be shown in an ‘animal energy. The disowned self may also be an ‘inner-child. The book shows variants of the ‘inner-child, such as the ‘magical child. I find the exploration of ‘inner-child interesting, but it only just skims the surface of what to do when this aspect of self emerges. The ‘inner child is about knowing how to ‘be, says Stone on p150, where as, ‘The rest of our personality knows how to “do and how to “act”. People can argue the validity of this statement. Everyone’s experience of this aspect of self is different. But it is a valid enough assumption. Do read this book. Definitely worth while. You may even find yourself recognising aspects of yourself as you go through it. Sometimes worth having a dialogue on paper with them, if you’re into that.
I was hooked on this book from the get go. It was recommended as further reading in my Somato Emotional Release training manual and I would highly recommend for Upledger Craniosacral therapists to read it as it seems to have been a huge influence on the therapeutic imagery and dialogue work in this modality. Indeed I wish I'd read it prior to my training. It is engaging, well written and really makes sense psychologically, while avoiding any heavy theoretical baggage. Basically the authors, two long time psychiatrists with oodles of experience cane up with a powerful therapy tool that they teach to lay people in lots of different modalities. They don't shy away from the spiritual dimensions of life and therapy either which is refreshing.
This is an amazing and enlightening book about a fairly new communication and self-interpretation technique. It is one of those books that rings very true as to the way we tend to dis-integrate over time as a result of traumas in our lives, and how we might approach reintegration of those selves into a personality system that functions in a healthier way. I'm looking forward to incorporating what i've learned from the book into my own therapy (My therapist is a practitioner of the Voice Dialogue technique, and introduced me to it) as well as using it in my interactions with others.
I highly recommend the book to self-improvement geeks like myself, or others with an interest in therapeutic techniques, the makeup of personality and the psyche, interpersonal dynamics, etc. I think it will provide a unique and valuable perspective for future application, investigation, and dialogue.
After being introduced to Voice Dialogue in a workshop, I wanted to know more. Alas, this book wasn't quite right for me. The edition I read was from the mid-eighties and made the technique almost seem outdated with all the Jungian dreamwork examples it offered. I'm still intrigued by Voice Dialogue, but if I hadn't experienced it myself this book just might have put me off.
Generally I'm a Voice Dialogue fan -- all the subpersonalities it has us explore can sometimes consume more time than more typical Gestalt chair work but hey, if it's your preference to go really deep this is a style of therapy for you. :)
Embracing Our Selves is an introduction to a powerful gestalt-like technique called Voice Dialogue which, upon learning, undoubtedly blazed a trail for many of the 3rd wave, psychospiritual models that are popular today (such as IFS). I do not believe they are celebrated or given credit for their courageous pioneering into the depths of the kaleidoscopic nature of the psyche. This book creates a fresh - though a bit outdated now - method for negotiating with our sub-personalities and, in turn, catalyzing the evolution of our consciousness.
Voice Dialogue, a concept by psychologists Hal and Sidra Stone, is one of the many offspring of Carl Gustav Jung’s Personality Psychology. I’ve skimmed through this edition, to get a feel of the concept. Originally published in 1989, this version seems outdated and the examples feel like clichés. Also, the many interviews come across as implausible concoctions, roleplay or schizophrenia. I missed a description or explanation on how the clients get to a state where different voices come up. How does that work? Not to mention the many breakthroughs clients seem to realise through dreams. So I’ll probably read a more recent work on this topic, to see what’s useful in the current day and age.
This book is aimed towards psychology professionals. However, if you are looking for some good self-exploration, this book is intriguing. It takes a little while to get the flow of it. I found myself thinking, "Is the clinician trying to coax out multiple personality disorder?" What it is really about is giving your various traits a voice and imagining what they would say to you. Definitely thought-provoking.
There are a lot of really interesting and relatable ideas in this book. It gave insight into a lot of things going on in my head and also into a lot of my current and past relationships with friends, family, exes. The writing is not very good and I had a really hard time getting through the first third of it. The second and third parts were considerably more enjoyable for me. Although only giving it three stars I recommend it - just be open minded and take some/leave some as u see fit.
Eye opening and comforting. Reminds us that the answers to some of life's biggest questions can only be found from within.
As mentioned in the book, there are deities and villains within us that must be honored and respected, just like the gods of ancient Greece, in order for us to live with ourselves, with other people, and the lessons in life.
Desperately needs updating. References persecutors as "demonic selves", weirdly racial comments about "Mexicans, Middle Eastern Men", and otherwise insightful section on women's liberation is stuck in the 70s.
A nice perspective on earlier theories of parts psychology / inner aspects/ inner voices, but must be read along with newer material.
I didn’t get very far in this book, until I was actually bored. And slightly confused about all these part selves, but also the theoretical and practical implications of the books (even though that was what they were trying to explain). I had hoped for the opposite. And if the book isn’t comprehensive to me at the outset, when it’s trying to explain and lay out its theoretical groundwork, and if I’m already bored at this point: it probably won’t get a whole lot better. So moving on to the many other books that holds promise of being practical tools and to broaden the scope of my understanding.
From soul-searchers to goal seekers to career-minded creatives interested in accessible wellness—and those who delight in discovering conscious and subconscious components of our personality that make up our everyday reality—this is an incredibly liberating must-read. As many, if not most have discovered life can be incredibly messy but before you hide traits from yourself that have historically gotten you judged or punished, why not deeply and profoundly embrace what has contributed to the multitude of alter egos that make you who you are? Embracing Our Selves is a unique opportunity to meet the good, the bad, and the ugly and be the better for it.
I think this book is probably great for therapists. As a therapee (?) it was educational and helpful, but drier than a burned biscotti. The example dialogues from the various selves all lacked any charisma or relatability, and it made for a tough slough. I excepted to read it in a day or so. It took almost two weeks, and not because I was busy with other things. I had to take some time off after the nightmares it gave me, so -- be warned I guess.
I loved this book. Published in the late 80s it is quite useful today. As a Co-Active coach I was referred to this book a few years ago by one of my certification supervisors. He suggested it to populate my fulfillment "crew". It is much more than that, awareness to the bone through a process that is not obvious to practice w/o proper training and you don't have to actually practice the process for you to obtain enormous value from reading it.
What I liked: - The different selves that we have as part of us is real and beautifully explained and illustrated. - Some mythology is used to illustrate concepts, but not enough
What I didn't like: - This book is an advert for their Voice Dialogue method, which I mean, I understand, but personally not that interested in the nuances of that - Too many dreams of other people explained in detail - boring - Too new age for me; the wording used is ridiculous at times
I found the book a good read in the categories of self-improvement and psychology. As a practitioner in the Psychology field of humanities, I appreciate the wealth of knowledge in this book touching on topics such as Heaven and Earth, the manifestations we are in both realms. Emotions and spirituality are explored in this book with much fluidity and respect to the life force within us. Evolution of consciousness is attained with the teacher and student principles at play.
Fantastic walkthrough of the theory of our selves and how we can become aware of all aspects of our owned and disowned personalities. I found it very balanced and very well presented. I had learned about this theory from my therapist and it gave me a more in-depth view and methodology for how to work with my selves
