Stephen King creates mentally disturbed characters and places them in situations that bring out the worst in them. Arnie for instance was the school loser. He wasn't handsome nor popular until he bought Christine. Whatever evil embodied the car was brought out by Arnie's hero worship of the car. He was possessed with it because it was a symbol of power and speed. King did the same thing with Jack in the Shinning. He took a sick alcoholic with a violent nature and put him into an isolated hotel. This was a recipe for disaster. Of course we must ask ourselves this: Did the Overlook bring out the evil in Jack or was Jack the conduit? The same with Christine. Did the car possess Arnie or was Arnie the evil one with all his pent up anger against the institution that had bullied him for years? We could ask the same questions about Carrie. Was Carrie really evil or was it the perpetrators that pushed her anger so far that it had a life of its own that she could not control. These questions are why we like King. His novels are psychological in nature, meaning there is always a cause and effect theme.
