Erica Throne Well... Some do. Philip Roth retired in 2012, six years before his death. I guess I remember that because it was the first and only time I've heard of a writer retiring. I'm sure there are other examples. Oh, but in an interview Roth mentions E.M Forester's early retirement. So yeah, not unheard of. Honestly, as a writer, I can't imagine that at all.
