Great answer! You capture where I've ended up with how to think about the tattoos. There was definitely no sense of bragging. I agree that it's important to remember that this is a new world people are living in which has meant they have created new traditions to survive there.
Its a pretty wild world...I was amazed at the relative calm of the story, and a bit grateful that we were spared senseless gore!
