Rikanin I know I'm coming late to the party but I disagree a little with TyLean's interpretation of Lilian's reason for wearing the bracelet. I don't think she saw it as a way to label herself Mrs. Rearden. She saw that bracelet as being completely worthless and wore it only so she could show her friends how long suffering she was to put up with Hank Rearden. Her intent when showing it off wasn't for people to say to themselves, "Only YOU are Hank Reardon's wife." She wanted them to pity her sad little gift and look on her like she was some kind of saint for putting up with him. I agree that Dagney saw Lilian as undeserving and that she understood the true value of the bracelet though.

G. Hello Rikanin!Interesting so basically Lilian played his victim in front of other people but a hero in front of him.Is this what you try to say?It is possible as immorality always has two faces-a victim or a hero depending on whom they are faced with.Thank you for the input.

Rikanin No...she didn't hide her contempt for him very well if at all. She seemed to mock him at every turn. Nothing heroic about her.

G. So she just played the victim all the time? Maybe her victim playing made her look heroic towards others because there was something strong about her personality in a bad way. I can't say what exactly but she sounded quite unauthentic in the story. I thought it was her two facedness.

Rikanin I never examined it beyond the fact that If I had been Hank Reardon I'd have divorced her thrown her out on her ass and kicked my mother and brother out right along with her. They were all three pretty despicable.

Anshul Hey Rikanin!
That's what Hank eventually did.

message 7: by Rikanin (new)

Rikanin I know...just not nearly soon enough.

message 8: by Anshul (new)

Anshul without that delay, their true nature would not have been revealed in entirety. And without that Hank's reaction had seemed inappropriate.

Rikanin I disagree...they treated him with contempt from the start and who knows how many years prior that had been going on. But for the sake of the story yes...it probably wouldn't have served the story for it to happen so near the beginnng
