Angie I know this Q&A session is years old, but I just have to thank you for writing Moloka'i. No book has ever moved me the way it did. I lived on O'ahu for four years and before moving away from the islands, my husband and I took a very special trip to Kalaupapa because of my interest in and love of the place, developed almost exclusively because of the story you told. We were fortunate enough to have a resident connection who sponsored our visit and we were able to spend a day in the community exploring and experiencing in a way we wouldn't have been able to do as part of the official tour groups (like riding in the back of the resident's pick up truck to the top of Kauhako Crater and looking down into the lake Rachel so feared.). As I visited each location described in your book, I was just in awe. Thank you for creating such beautiful stories, bringing history to life in such clear and meaningful ways, and especially for letting us experience a lifetime with your characters. I'm anxiously awaiting whatever comes next in the Alan Brennert collection!!

Alan Brennert Mahalo, Angie, I'm glad you enjoyed MOLOKA'I and that you got to visit the settlement yourself--it's a special place indeed. I'm currently working on a sequel called DAIUGHTER OF MOLOKA'I, which tells the story of Rachel's daughter Ruth and expands on their relationship at greater length than I was able to in MOLOKA;I. No publication date yet, but I will let everyone here on ŷ know when I have one!

Angie I saw that announcement about Daughter of Moloka'i on your website and I could not be more thrilled! Reading just the small teaser of what to look forward to in the story of
Ruth and Rachel made me so excited! I will be anxiously awaiting the announcement of a publication date! Mahalo nui loa for responding to my comment!

Myrna Nielsen See James Michener’s book Hawai’i for the best section on the leper colony. A young bride is sent there when the tell tale marks show up on her skin.

Tina Luttrell Thanks so much for these books. I loved them both, but Molokak’i will always stand out as one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I’ve been an avid reader for most of my 70 years! It touched me in so many ways. I have recommended it to my book club, which is online and has over 300 members, and I do believe almost every one has read it now. Thanks again, and I’m looking forward to your new book.
