Fermentina like fermentation??? The name is Fermina (my translation as well as original) and that´s supposse to mean "strong" in spanish, which is exactly all the character is, a strong woman. I usually do not comment, but I could not pass that fermentation thing....

Gregory Stone Yes. The clues are there if you look for them: Florentino is full of excrement on his first visit to the widowed Fermina. 622 affairs being 'idealistic love' is a clear joke. The fizzling of the affairs (the one with Sara Noriega in particular). The deadly consequences (one woman is murdered, the seduced schoolgirl commits suicide), directly linking cholera as a disease with Florentino's diseased thinking. The capstone is the use of the convention of journey in literature to show that the whole diseased mess ends in a boat stuck in a swamp, going nowhere, with a mostly impotent man and a senile, duped woman who simply wants a warm body with a side-serving of sexual arousal.
