It is mandatory. I just finished reading it in my grade 10 english class
Ah yes -- the mandatory reads... I finally made it through Tess of the D'Urbervilles in grade 11. A HUGE book, that did not move very fast!
IN the past, as we can read on Wikipedia, they had the common sense to put it in THREE books! ('Tess...')
