Tim Thank you very much. I think this explains the ending a lot. I really had trouble figuring out what was going on. But you raise a good point about plausibility. I guess the author didn't want us to get too physiological! Except that the whole book turns on a physiological oddity.
I enjoy Harris' writing and is a great storyteller. Just not so sure about this surprise ending.

Netti Very good answer! But "genetically female" is not necessarily applicable: a dysfunctional Y-chromosome could initiate female genitals (for the curious: without menstruation/breasts). There are several different genetic conditions (male and female) that could explain Benitez' appearance. I rather appreciate that Harris leaves the exact explanation in the dark. Because the mind makes the person. Not biology. A person with indistinct sex is even better suited to challenge the Roman Church than an actual female...
