I thought she was telling Ed “they had a son� as in Ethan came into her life & needed help/love & support that he was not getting from his parents.
But she said that before she’d even spoken to Ethan?
They meant Jane and Alistair have a son.
She was describing the new neighbors across the park - she hadn't met any of them yet, but she saw them through the window.
