Joseph Kony is the leader of the Ugandan guerrilla group, the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army). This group isn't any average army.
It's an army of children.
Kony takes boys and girls from their homes and turns them into soldiers and sex slaves, using them to capture more children, forming this horrible army.
This has been going on for twenty-six years.
Some estimate the number of children Kony has taken to be as many as 104,000. Villages fear for their lives and the lives of their children. You may have seen pictures of as many as hundreds of Ugandan children together at night, hoping that staying together can protect them from Kony's army.
Now comes the question. I know that's what you're thinking. I thought it myself when I first heard about it:
"That's sad and all, but what can I do?"
Plenty. You can do plenty. And some things you can do without even paying a cent.
In October 2011, President Barack Obama authorized the deployment of approximately 100 combat-equipped U.S. troops to central Africa. This was mostly thanks to an organization called Invisible Children Inc. The main reason why the United States is helping in Uganda is because the government saw how many Americans cared about bringing Kony down.
Now we need to ensure that America stays there until we catch Kony.
This group is all about spreading the word. Bringing people together who care about what's going on halfway across the world. Even those who don't live in America are encouraged to join. This is becoming viral all over the world, not just in the U.S.
We need to make this known. We're going to make Joseph Kony famous.
