Just a short review, as I finished this on my holidays last week and have already started book 3!
I did really enjoy this book. The first third of it followed the story of Ahmann Jardir as he grew up in Krasia and trained to become a powerful warrior and eventually head of Krasia, as we knew him to be in the previous book. It was interesting to see this side of Jardir and learn more about him, as he became a really well rounded character in this book, compared to the fleeting glimpse of a charac ...more

There are okay books, and there are good books, and there are great books. This book was pretty great. The ending was, wow, pretty captivating. The characters continue to draw the reader, at least me, in. The beginning was a little slow, following what I consider to be the antagonist through early life. Flesh's out the main character as well as a few of the other characters. The first book seemed relatively black and white, the second book ventures well into the realm of the grey.

I felt like I was dumped into a room with a bunch of people I didn't know (or didn't like) at first. It seemed to take forever to get back to the characters I fell in love with. Sort of the same way I felt when reading "A Feast for Crows," but I did come to enjoy the desert characters. It's fun to see things from such an interesting perspective. Finally, the warded man enters the stage and holy shit. Romantic ending?, wasn't expecting that!

I thought it was very well written. I like how Brett shows how each character comes of age and grows into their adult lives. I especially like how all the characters come together in this book. It culminates with a good, if predictable, twist. I cannot wait for the next book! (February 2013 I believe)

Peter Brett has become my favorite author. This story is fantastic. I do admit that this "middle" book was a harder read and has a lot more detail, but I fully expect that it is required to continue the story in the next book. I can't wait!!
