I'm still mopping up from finishing this novel. Not mopping up in terms of a few tears, but really deeply moved. To be honest, I'm surprised at my reaction.

I was hesitant to read this at first. I've had bad luck in the past with child, or child-like narrators, and knowing the subject matter, I wasn't sure I could deal with the themes. But I also wanted to read this early if I was going to read it at all - getting in before I heard other people's opinions, or had the plot spoiled for me. I think

Oh, this had some really good moments of suspense where your knees are knocking from fear of what's coming. And such tender moments between Ma and Jack. ...more

Original, remarkable, gripping. I was wholly engrossed in this study in sociology and psychology as told thru the eyes of a child.

I could not put this book down. It took me a few days to read because things like work kept getting in the way, but once I started reading, it was hard to stop. Very fast paced, this novel is told from the point of view of a five-year-old whose entire life has been spent inside of a single room, which is actually a makeshift prison for him and his mom. It's interesting to look at society and the world through the eyes of someone who has never been exposed to anything but an 11x11 room. ...more

This was an intriguing and fast moving book, if you can get past the creepy and disturbing underlying circumstances. I found Jack, the narrator, a fascinating little boy and authentically written. I wish the end wasn't so open-ended. ...more
