This is a space opera about a bunch of kids who end up on derelict space craft with a broken AI. I wish they would've gotten on the ship sooner. It seemed like a huge amount of plot happened to get us to that point, and because it felt inevitable that they would eventually get on the ship, it felt like that part of the story took forever. I've always enjoyed fantasy worlds slightly more than sci-fi worlds. But the world of Derelict was so vivid that I fell right into it and didn't emerge for forty eight hours. LJ Cohen is an excellent wordsmith, and I frequently found myself laughing or shaking my head in appreciation of how space-appropriate she would make a current cliche. I thoroughly enjoyed Derelict, and am eager to read the sequel, hoping for many more to come.

Overall I enjoyed most of the characters, the science and tech of the story. There was one plot point/character interaction that just struck cognitive dissonance for me, made my internal creeper alarm go off, and caused me to stop reading for a few days, but, I had to find out if the main characters made it back home safe and sound, or were left adrift in space, ready for a sequel.
