A good start to a series with interesting characters in a different setting: vaudeville in 1950's Brighton. The premise involves a WWII group that attempted to trick the Nazis with various visual illusions - and there really were such attempts, many quite successful. A young woman's body is found cut into three and Inspect Edgar Stephens is unpleasantly reminded of a magic trick and his old friend - the magician - Max Mephisto - who is currently appearing in Brighton where the remains are discovered. A very good book. I like Ms. Griffith's other series and thought I would try this one and was not disappointed. The book tells the story of police detective Edgar Stephens and Max Mephisto, two men who had served in the war in a group called "The Magic Men." I love the Ruth Galloway series by the same author, but I'm sad to say, I could only get about halfway through this book. It just didn't hold my attention--I think one reason is that the cast of characters seemed uninteresting and virtually interchangeable. Maybe it was just me. Will look forward to the next Ruth Galloway mystery, though. :)

This was the first mystery that I've read where I knew who the killer was half way in. I love magic and was hoping for something more thrilling but skimmed to the end.
