I loved the other three books I’ve read by this author (The War That Saved My Life and The War I Finally Won, and Halfway to the Sky) but this one didn’t immediately grab me and I wasn’t sure how much I’d like it, but it grew on me relatively quickly. Then I loved it. All four books I’ve read by this author thus far I’ve given 5 stars.

I loved this book but most of the way through I wasn’t sure if this would be a 5 star or 4 star book for me. If I was still a bit uncertain at the end, the author

Perfectly captured in this audiobook format, Turpin delivers the perfect performance balancing 10-year-old Della and 16-year-old Suki along with the secondary cast of characters in their lives. Knowing that this book is filled with trigger warnings, Brubaker Bradley deftly delivers this story for the middle-grade audience for an audience that needs this book so they to can know that there is life after traumatic experiences and to know that they can seek help if they are in a similar situation.

Della has always been taken care of by her older sister, Suki. The two of them stayed together after their mother went to prison and they moved in with her mother’s boyfriend. That boyfriend did something horrible to Della, so the sisters fled. Now they are in foster care together, being really taken care of for the first time in their lives. Suki has always been Della’s protector so what happens when Suki suddenly is the one who needs help and caring for? Della is willing to talk in court about ...more

I’m glad that this book exists and I hate the fact that it has to. Kimberly Brubaker Bradley approaches the topic with sensitivity and compassion and has created a heartbreaking story that doesn’t shy away from the horrors inflicted on children while still emphasizing that healing from trauma is possible.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the way the auth

The sexual assault and self harm are way, way too much for this to be a children’s book. How is this a Newbery Honor Book? I didn’t look closely beyond the silver seal and that was a huge mistake.

A very well crafted book about a sensitive topic. Not only is it well written, but it has valuable information as in what to do if something like this happens.
