I missed so much my first time through this. So. Much. I always liked this book very much but it was never my favorite like I know it is for a lot of people. With my experienced Malazan eyes, this has jumped right to the top.
Coltaine, Mappo and Icarium, Iskaral Pust, Fiddler and Kalum, Heboric and Felisin (and the whole thing with Baudin made so much more sense!), Duiker and the chain of dogs. This was so good and so much planted for the rest of the series.

Gods this is a good book. My first reread in about a decade went very smoothly. It's amazing how much of the world and people and weird little details i remember, but amazing how little of the actual story I remember. I am once again utterly hooked on the series. All in the name of getting up to speed so I can read the new book! There are better reviews out there, go read them, this book deserves more than this.

Dark, grim and grisly yet with flashes of brilliant humanity. Had a love/hate reaction to the whole Chain of Dogs part, which encompasses 1/2 the book, just because I hate war, cruelty and violence. But couldn't put it down. Rushing right into the third of the series - then I'll need a break!

So... here we are again! Me desperated to explain to you fuckers that this book its the shit! That we ain't talking about regular fantasy here... that what Erickson did here its something to be awed by... and there you are... thinking that fantasy its the game of thrones... sigh... I'm not even wasting my time! You're an idiot!

What is one to make of these massive books? At times some of the most original, striking moments I've ever read in epic fantasy, and at the same time so many scenes where the reponse can only be: "Now what do you suppose that was all about?" Mystery piles on enigma until it feels like a dream: you know there is interior logic here, if you could only divine it. I understand how some would find this frustrating, but I was hooked. It reads like a historical novel: brief moments of intense character

I understand this book much much more on the second read through. The first time I read the series I was too caught up trying to figure out what the heck a warran was, and what the rules of the realm were. Now, that I *somewhat* get all of that, I decided to reread but was dreading, just dreading rereading the Chain of Dogs. How can fiction be so painful? Good writing is how. And, now that I understand things a bit better, I'll be raising my rating from the first time around.

I start my 3rd read of this book with some trepidation. The story packs an emotional punch, one of the few books I've read that brought me to tears. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), I would say it is one of my favorite Malazan books.

This one is tied for my favorite in this series with Bonehunters. The Chain of Dogs is incredible.
