This was a fun novel-- the second half is where things really get exciting. Up until that, there's no real hint or view of what's really going on with Jacob and his grandfather's past. Actually, he should have gotten to the island quicker, I think.
This book is not scary-- though the pictures are creepy, I do not think the author intended the children to be scary. Creepy, unusual, weird, maybe. But scary-- I doubt it.
