This powerful saga centres around the Ibis, a former slave ship which is now to transport workers and prisoners. Set at the time of the Opium Wars, we meet a wide range of characters. There is Deeti, whose husband dies from the results of his opium addiction, and who is rescued from his funeral pyre by Kalua, a low-caste villager. There is the feisty French orphan Paulette and her childhood friend, Jodu. On the boat are Zachary Reid, an American sailor, and the tough first mate Crowle.
