First time I read it was on the bus to Girl Scout camp.

Doing a reread, as it's been almost 15 years since I first read this series. Really amazing worldbuilding, of course - unparalleled, frankly, in the mashup of high fantasy and far-future earth stories. But there's a lot of unfortunate gender stereotyping, and everyone is white, and no one is queer, and other similar stuff you'd probably expect from sci-fi published in 1968. Still, it's a classic, and enjoyable. Gotta rate it high if only for how formative it was to me in middle school.

Maccafrey is a great read for those that love fantasy and science fiction. It can get a bit political at times, but Mccaffrey create an astounding picture of the world she has created. If you have read Paolini, you might want to check her out. She was a great influence for his books. This is the first in the series. It is not a quick read, and it is not written for young adults.
