Enjoyed this, although it’s my least favorite of the series so far, mostly because I dislike plots which hinge on amnesia. I suppose it’s slightly more plausible when the memory loss is magically induced, instead of the result of a shipwreck or a blow to the head, but it’s still hard to accept the convenient way the plot is served by a selective alteration of memory.

carey's done it again! another stellar close to an awesome trilogy. i didn't love kushiel's scion as much as i hoped to, but now that i've seen where she went with the rest of the trilogy i want to reread it quite badly, because at this point having just finished 'mercy' today, i'm hard-pressed to say who i like as a hero/ine more, imriel or phedre. i'm a little speechless, so i'll write a better review when i've sat on it a little bit, but for anyone who's on the fence about these books i just

I love both the Kushiel trilogies. Well-formed characters, fully-realized alternate Europe, with an intriguing guiding social concept - "Love as thou wilt." Then imagine lush, dense, often romantic and sexy plots that are not based on jealousy or infidelity (lots of all kinds of sex, however)... they focus a LOT of family, social, and political interactions. Never dull, many interesting characters introduced and returned much later, just like life. Fabulous reads, all six of them.

The final chapter is the story of Imriel, son of Melisande Shahrizai and foster-son of Phedre and Joscelin. This was not what I was expecting, but a wonderful read and a fitting end to this trilogy. Carey is in her form with the lush descriptions and erotic writing of Imriel and Sidonie, with an interesting take on the adventure-quest that is common to her stories.
I was not disappointed!
I was not disappointed!

Up until this book, I had really thought that this second trilogy paled in comparison with the first set of three detailing the adventures of Phedre. It still does. BUT, I have to admit that this book was absolutely the best of the the three. Magic, fighting, long treks, and romance all come together to make this a brilliant end to an epic series.

If you've come this far, you like this series as much as I do. The over the top romantic adventure erotica continues and this trilogy ends satisfactorily.
