What Members Thought

This book was wonderful -- a new favorite of mine. It had mystery, intrigue, lovely descriptions, superb plotting, and a bit of humor. Some of the dialogue is stilted (including closely-related characters addressing each other by first and last name over and over -- very strange). And there are a lot of cultural, classical, literary, and artistic references and some French and Latin terms. I read the basic, free Kindle version, but if I re-read it, I'd look for an annotated version.

This is the story of poor Lucy Graham who marries rich Sir Michael Audley and becomes Lady Audley. But, she has a secret and she will go to any lengths to keep it safe.
The secret is apparent from the moment the book begins, and by the time you are midway through, only the proof remains. The story is enjoyable and fast-paced, though it loses a little steam in the second half. I liked Lucy Audley’s character it is quite strong for 1860, and must be one of the first of its kind.

The vicious ironic observations of the social codes of the upper social strata and the nuanced description of the protagonist, Robert Audley, makes up for the terrible plot and the dated moralism concerning "duty". Thus three stars, but really, it's probably only worth two.

This was "ok" but nothing I'd rave about.
Free for kindle and it's good! I'd never heard of it, but apparently it's a classic. ...more
