I read the first chapter and didn't think I'd like Pickwick very much. The Club starts out as an ignorant and selfish group intent on buffoonery. After a few more chapters, the characters start to develop and Dickens quickly turns away from the initial casting and makes Mr. Pickwick into an interesting and benevolent literary character. The surfacing of Sam Weller adds a sense of balance to the book and once he and his father show up, the book makes a wonderful read.

This was not my favourite Dickens but it’s still a (mostly) fun, rollicking read with a bit of social commentary thrown in and a cast of the usual charming, and despicable, characters including the loyal Sam Weller (or Veller), his rascal of a father and of course the kind, eponymous Mr Pickwick himself. This book has many digressions while the characters hear the stories of the many interesting individuals they meet on their adventures which means that it is quite lengthy. Still, not a bad debu

I've never read Dickens before so I'm really enjoying this reading experience. It's great for bedtime since it was written as individual stories for a magazine all the chapters are about equal length!
