The sweeping tale explores the intricacies of colonialism, wars, divided loyalties, race relations, and the exploitation of subjugated peoples and their natural resources. Invasion by Japan left destruction of Burma and devastated people left the country. At one time Burma was called “Burma is land of gold�.

Ghosh had devoted 5 years of his life to the travel and research material to write this story. In the span of several years and several generations in three countries (Burma, India, and Malaya) from 1885 through the mid-1990s the story unfolds.

The complexity of the narrative by Ghosh displays a deep understanding of local cultures, history, politics and sentiments. It's a challenging reading this novel as parts are over descriptive and more in form of historical book. As I progressed it got more exciting and touching at times. This is friction novel and for readers to enjoy it as such the author could have limited the historical facts and had fewer characters to make it more interesting.
