Like The Kite Runner before it, A Thousand Splendid Suns centers around the incredible lives of modern Afghani men and women. The subject matter is, as expected, extremely bleak, yet Hosseini's cleaver hand paints vivid and amiable characters that make the books hard to put down.

I quite liked it so I won't write much about it. Only this: I was amazed how thoroughly a man author captured the woman perspective. At least half of the readers think he failed at this task but I didn't even once have the feeling that this or that wasn't how a woman would handle (an Afghan woman, mind you. Because I would have killed the bastard much earlier.)
However, good old Hosseini just can't help but use cheesy clichés and melodramatic scenes that drive me crazy, just as in "The Kite Runne ...more
