This is my first Kate Morton book and it won’t be the last, wow it captured me fully from the start and it was so hard to put down, yes it is a big book but the story needed that, the story of three woman, family secrets that have been kept for sixty years, a crime or a tragedy a family lost and a long time before all the questions are answered, a must read but don’t plan on doing anything else while reading.

“Home, she’d realised, wasn’t a place or a time or a person, though it could be any and all of those things: home was a feeling, a sense of being complete. The opposite of ‘home wasn’t ‘away, it was ‘lonely. When someone said, ‘I want to go home, what they really meant was that they didn’t want to feel lonely anymore.

Thoughts? For me, at 628 pages, Homecoming was 328 pages too long. Lots of flowery descriptions etc. The last 20% picked up, but then the ending was rushed. I predicted the twist/mystery early on and didn’t warm to either Nora or Jess. Enjoyed the dual timelines, didn’t mind the book-within-a-book device (implausible, but okay). Read if you’ve got oodles of spare time.

An enjoyable read. I particularly liked the historical sections set in the Adelaide Hills. It was a little drawn out and a bit heavy handed (didactic?) on the writing and books theme. But overall the characters were well drawn and the plot kept you interested.

Loved this one by Kate Morton. Takes a bit of time investment as it's so big and there's a lot going on... but a great read.
