I didn't think I'd like this book about a Black nanny to a White child, yawn, but I did. I liked the way the characters were written, even the ones I didn't like: Alix/Alex, Tamra. They rang true to my experiences with similar women. I also liked and appreciated the last 2 chapters--very realistic. When I read that the author, Reid—had spent six years caring for the children of well off New Yorkers, so I felt comfortable with her characterizations. Alex/Alix was in my opinion emotionally unwell.

From start to finish this book is a whole experience.
Kiley Reid’s knack for characterization is remarkable. I felt like I knew these characters, their mannerisms, their voices, and their personalities. Often, when an author describes the face a character makes, I have a general, vague idea of what it would look like. But when Reid describes a character, I feel like I can see her in my mind.
