What Members Thought

This is the first book by Erdrich I've read, and even though I did it the injustice of putting it aside so that I could read a book-group selection on time, upon my return, Last Report still delighted me.
I do not normally enjoy books that indulge in the wildly improbable. So what about this tale of a young widow who is able, for about eighty years, to serve a group of Ojibwe indians as a Catholic priest, caught and kept my attention? Not sure. Sigh. I think I must be turning into a grouchy hard-to-please old geeze. So many books seem to displease me lately.
I just couldn't get into this book. I got about 100 pages in and realized I was only picking it up out of a sense of duty. I wish I could put my finger on why it didn't work for me. What an amazing read it is too, with a back-and-forthness that slowly builds in its intensity. The people and places became familiar to me despite my not having read earlier novels touching on many of the same subjects (starting with 1984's Love Medicine).
The main character, Father Damien Modeste, is secretly also the young ex-widow Agnes DeWitt. Father Damien spends decades as the ...more

Happy sigh. This was a great read, lyrical, rich, profound. I will be reading more Erdrich, especially since I learned that many of the characters here are more fully drawn in other books. Which is good, because my only complaint is that at times a character would show up and I'd be like "wait, who is this person? Am I supposed to know them, did I miss the intrudoction?"
But overall, I loved the writing, the characters, the story, the poetry. ...more
