There's no narrative voice in Puig's novel, only dialogue. Despite this the novel is wonderfully multilayered, and Puig has subtly weaved the stories of the main characters among the recountings of the films Molina has seen. Loved the choice of films, Cat People (1942) and I Walked with a Zombie (1943) among others. By recounting films the jail time of Molina and Valentín goes by faster, helping them to forget the harsh reality. However, reality seeps through the stories because you can't ever e ...more

I love my job because I came into work today and my boss gave me this book saying, "i may not know you that well, but I can tell that you'll love this book." my bosses, a happily married couple with a newborn, are the most wonderful people. seriously, you've never met lovelier people in your life. ...more

Very interesting. Hard format to read, given that it is entirely conversational in nature with little to no description I'd been expecting some of that, but the long passages in stream-of-consciousness had almost no punctuation breaks, ick. ...more
