I am sorry that I don’t have anything more comforting to say to you, because active love compared with imaginary love is a cruel and fearsome thing. Imaginary love craves immediate action; it is quickly satisfied by this and wants everyone to be sure to witness it. To achieve this, people are really even willing to give up their own lives, so long as it’s done quickly and doesn’t take too long—as if onstage, where everyone would see them and applaud them. Active love, in comparison, demands work and endurance; for some people, it is nothing less than a way of life, a discipline.
