    Leigh Bardugo
“Until this moment, Wylan hadn't quite understood how much they meant to him. His father would have sneered at these thugs and thieves, a disgraced soldier, a gambler who couldn't keep out of the red. But they were his first friends, his only friends, and Wylan knew that even if he'd had his pick of a thousand companions, these would have been the people he chose.”
    Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

“Scarlet cocked her head. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go? It’s going to require some precise manuvering to attach to the docking clamp, and from what Cinder told me about your flying skills…â€
“What do you mean? What did Cinder say about my flying skills?
Scarlet and Cinder shared a look. “Naturally, she told me that you’re a fantastic pilot, said Scarlet, “Absolutely top-notch.
“I think she was practicing her sarcasm, said Iko.
Thorne glared, but Cinder only shrugged.”

“Kai neared his desk again, seeing that the fugitive's profile had been transferred to the screen. His frown deepened. Perhaps not dangerous, but young and inarguably good-looking. His prison photo showed him flippantly winking at the camera. Kai hated him immediately.”

“It was a few seconds before Cinder found her voice and she had to grip the door frame to keep standing.
    “T³ó´Ç°ù²Ô±ð?â€
    His head jerked around. “Cinder?
“Wh—what are you—how? Where have you been? What’s going on? Why are you wearing that stupid bandanna?
He laughed. Gripping a wooden cane, he stumbled toward her, waving one hand until it landed on her shoulder. Then he was hugging her, suffocating her against his chest. “I missed you too.
“You jerk, she hissed, even as she returned the hug. “We thought you were dead!
“Oh, please. It’d take a lot more than a satellite plummeting to Earth to kill me. Although, admittedly, Cress may have saved us that time.”

    “Captain,â€ she murmured.
“I think I’m in love with you.
An eyebrow shot up. She counted six beats of his heart before, suddenly, he laughed.
“Don’t tell me it took you two whole days to realize that. I must be losing my touch.”

    "Yes, Captain."

She raised an eyebrow at him. "Actually, I'm pretty sure Cinder-"
    "Yes, I did.”

“Were you born with all your organs intact?â€ he responds.
I can’t see his face, so I have no way of knowing where he’s going with this question.
    “Yes … I say cautiously.
“Good, he responds, “then I expect you to use the one beneath your skull.
Damn. That insult burned a little.”

“Grabbing the doorknob, he twists, breaking the lock and shoving the door open. I’m just stepping off Trixie Skillz when I notice the hazy glow of an oil-lamp coming from inside, the flame turned way down low. Reclining on the couch next to it is an old woman, her white hair cropped close to her head, her spectacles perched low on her nose. She peers over them at us, the book in her hands entirely forgotten. We crashed the house of someone’s grandma. Just when I thought we were fresh out of horrors, another one comes. “We have nothing of any value, I assure you,â€ she says, her voice surprisingly steady for someone who thinks their home is being invaded. “I am not here for your things,â€ Pestilence says. “I am here for your hospitality.â€ The woman squints curiously at the horseman. Setting her book aside, she rises to her feet. Age has made her soft and plump, but there’s a certain quiet strength to her. “Ruth,â€ a thin, raspy voice calls from another room in the house, “who’s at the door?â€ Did he miss the part where we broke into their home? Ruth’s gaze stays on Pestilence for a long time, moving from his bow and quiver to his crown, before settling on his face. “I believe it’s one of the Four Horsemen, dear.â€ Her eyes flick to me. “And he’s brought with him a lady friend.”

“It was not until I met you, hated though you were, that I understood the meaning of God’s words. Of mercy.â€ He says this as though it’s of paramount importance. “And now I understand why there is hope yet for your kind. Because along with the bad, there is this.â€

...“And I cannot figure out what this is,â€ he continues, “only that I feel it when I see you and when I think of you. When we ride together and I hold you, I feel as though all is right. And when you laugh, I think I might truly die. This is an agonizing sort of pleasure, and it’s ever so perplexing. I don’t understand how pain and affection can coexist alongside one another.”
