    Khushwant Singh
“Not forever does the bulbul sing
    In balmy shades of bowers,
    Not forever lasts the spring
    Nor ever blossom the flowers.
    Not forever reigneth joy,
Sets the sun on days of bliss,
    Friendships not forever last,
They know not life, who know not this.”
    Khushwant Singh, Train to Pakistan

  • #2
    Nora Ephron
“Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real.”
    Nora Ephron

  • #3
    Jane Goodall
“One of my best days was when I ... offered [chimp David Greybeard] fruit on my outstretched hand, and he turned his head away. I put my hand closer - and he took the fruit, dropped it, and gently squeezed my hand, which is a chimp reassurance gesture ... We communicated perfectly in a language that predates words.”
    Jane Goodall

  • #4
    Deanna Raybourn
“Julia Grey, I would rather see you hanged than watch any sister of mine go haring off after a man who will not have her," my brother Bellmont raged.”
Deanna Raybourn, Silent on the Moor

  • #5

Deborah Levy, The Cost of Living: A Working Autobiography

  • #6
    Martin Latham
“I have seen this in thirty years of bookselling: customers stroking a book’s cover, peeking under the jacket, surreptitiously closing their eyes to smell the valley of pages - this sometimes accompanied by a quiet moan of pleasure- hugging it after purchase, and even giving it a little kiss.”
    Martin Latham, The Bookseller's Tale

  • #7

“I think by then I'd been single longer than is healthy for a young man.”
Ottessa Moshfegh, Homesick for Another World

“It is very strange that the years teach us patience - that the shorter our time, the greater our capacity for waiting.”
Elizabeth Taylor, A Wreath of Roses

  • #9
    Nuala O'Faolain
“The wait is long, my dream of you does not end.”
Nuala O'Faolain, My Dream of You

  • #10
    Megan Jacobson
“I'm still shy," I admit, pulling the sleeves over my hands, "and I might always be, I don't know, but I think you can be shy and still feel okay about yourself at the same time.”
    Megan Jacobson, Yellow

  • #11

    Charles Bukowski

  • #13
  • #14

“Her complexity is a glorious fire that consumes, while her simplicity goes unapproachable. But if one takes time to understand her, there is something beautiful to find, something simple to be loved. But she goes unloved, for being misunderstood.”
    Anthony Liccione

  • #17
    Dolly Alderton
“Being a heterosexual woman who loved men meant being a translator for their emotions, a palliative nurse for their pride and a hostage negotiator for their egos.”
    Dolly Alderton, Ghosts

  • #18
    Dolly Alderton
“The perfect man is kind, funny and generous. He bends down to say hello to dogs and puts up shelves.”
Dolly Alderton, Everything I Know About Love

  • #19
    Dolly Alderton
“To be a desirable woman—the sky’s the limit. Have every surface of your body waxed. Have manicures every week. Wear heels every day. Look like a Victoria’s Secret Angel even though you work in an office. It’s not enough to be an average-sized woman with a bit of hair and an all-right sweater. That doesn’t cut it. We’re told we have to look like the women who are paid to look like that as their profession.”
Dolly Alderton, Everything I Know About Love: A Memoir

  • #20
    Dolly Alderton
“I’m fiscally conservative but socially liberal, he said within the first two minutes of me asking him about his job. I wouldn’t be surprised if right-leaning thirty-somethings received a script in the post to prepare them for social situations.”
    Dolly Alderton, Ghosts

  • #21
“Institutionalized rejection of difference is an absolute necessity in a profit economy which needs outsiders as surplus people.”
    Audre Lorde

  • #22
“The humanitarian philosophies that have been developed (sometimes under some religious banner and invariably in the face of religious opposition) are human inventions, as the name implies - and our species deserves the credit. I am a devout atheist - nothing else makes any sense to me and I must admit to being bewildered by those, who in the face of what appears so obvious, still believe in a mystical creator. However I can see that the promise of infinite immortality is a more palatable proposition than the absolute certainty of finite mortality which those of us who are subject to free thought (as opposed to free will) have to look forward to and many may not have the strength of character to accept it.

Thus I am a supporter of Amnesty International, a humanist and an atheist. I believe in a secular, democratic society in which women and men have total equality, and individuals can pursue their lives as they wish, free of constraints - religious or otherwise. I feel that the difficult ethical and social problems which invariably arise must be solved, as best they can, by discussion and am opposed to the crude simplistic application of dogmatic rules invented in past millennia and ascribed to a plethora of mystical creators - or the latest invention; a single creator masquerading under a plethora of pseudonyms. Organisations which seek political influence by co-ordinated effort disturb me and thus I believe religious and related pressure groups which operate in this way are acting antidemocratically and should play no part in politics. I also have problems with those who preach racist and related ideologies which seem almost indistinguishable from nationalism, patriotism and religious conviction.”
    Harry Kroto

  • #23
    Nicholson Baker
“I woke up thinking a very pleasant thought. There is lots left in the world to read.”
    Nicholson Baker, The Anthologist

  • #24

“Open the scroll of conch and find the text
That lies behind the priestly susurrus.”
    Marilynne Robinson, Gilead

  • #25

“-I got the conch!" --Piggy (in Lord of the Flies), attempting Democracy”
