A “square peg in a round hole”situation except the square peg thinks the other shape should change so he can fit. I can’t bring myself to hate Daniel’s character because he’s very tortured by his nature; he feels a lot of shame for the way he acts and thinks but it’s his nature to act and think that way. The adults in his life are often cruel and his peers are either indifferent or spurn him. Phillip is his only “friend but that’s out of pity and his beloved teacher is a weirdo. Not to mention is family situation. Not really a surprise he’s not well adjusted I didn’t get much out of this book but I think it’ll enlighten someone who can relate to Daniel. Great structure, characters that felt like real people and genuinely scary moments that, to be cliche, gave me goosebumps. I was pulled in from the beginning and read the first 8 chapters in one night.
Jack is a textbook unreliable narrator and his written persona is so phony when followed by other people's accounts of their interactions with him.
My favorite part of the book is when Bex ends their friendship over the catfishing. I knew Jack wasn't a great person but my jaw dropped at how low he would go.
Even with all Jack's faults though, his brother Alistair annoyed me more. I hated all his little editorial notes....more

Sylvie on paper is fairly well adjusted, she has an apartment she maintains, a job she does well at (even if she is a bit emotionally absent while there) and she has a special needs dog she takes great care of. Her current obsession happens to be her therapist but she has a history of projecting onto her relationships and wants to change. I was a bit bored reading this at times; personally I found the excerpts from her job at the veterinary office to be the most interesting parts of the book. Give it a shot if you liked Big Swiss by Jen Beagin....more

It started super interesting and I was really anticipating an unconventional main character but she becomes weirdly passive and almost submissive?? as soon as the dark, sexy vampire shows up. (Hate him btw) We just spent a whole chapter learning her tragic story and her reasons for being guarded then this guy shows up and starts stalking her around town and she just LOVES it
I was hoping he was going to be much more level headed; as a well respected scholar you’d think he’d have a more patient temperament but he’s a super controlling, emotional alpha male. Expect he’s not! He’s a weirdo who acts really evasive every time Diana brings up sex because she’s the the most special witch in history ...more

I’m happy this isn’t a garden variety romance. It does have very cool magical elements like all the mystical creatures and the almost alchemical approach to magic.
I was hoping for more meaningful conflict it seemed like new characters were introduced and just created the illusion that was then just swiftly resolved.
Not to be too hard in the book, it genuinely was very wholesome and a sweet change of pace....more
