I was invested from page one, a page-turner no doubt. Loved the podcast & documentary excerpts, it helped the pacing of the story and made it easier to read. This is my first Lisa Jewell and I can't wait to read more. The birthday twin aspect was unique to write around. Following both Josie's and Alix's POVs made it more interesting and balanced, they are such different characters. I'm not 100% sure about the ending and the vagueness of the whole thing. I was expecting something unhinged to happen, a big plot twist or something, but it never came. That's on me and my expectations. The whole unwrapping of events was very thrilling and exciting but I was left wanting more. Overall I really enjoyed this and wanted to keep reading ASAP to understand the whole story!!...more

I had high expectations for this book, and it didn't disappoint. I was hooked ever since I read the synopsis, I was intrigued to know the story and characters since page one. This was a thought-provoking book that I'll remember for a long time I've not read anything like it until now. It reads like a literary fiction more than the usual thriller/mystery. The writing was compelling and moving, with every passing page I felt empathy for the characters. Getting to know Ansel (inmate on death row) and Lavender, Hazel, and Saffy (women who had been at some point part of his life) was so refreshing, it made the story richer and feel more real.
I appreciated the criticism of the power and romanticizing we give serial killers, especially male ones. It was so gut-wrenching realizing how often we remember the victims as just that, victims when they were so much more than that. They were human beings with memories and moments that were forgotten when someone decided to act upon their darkest thoughts. A book that everyone should read!!!
...and she thought how sad it was that a single bad thing could turn you into a story, a matter to be whispered about. Tragedy was undiscerning and totally unfair.
“She had known from a young age that everyone had darkness inside-some just controlled it better than others. Very few people believed that they were bad, and this was the scariest part. Human nature could be so hideous, but it persisted in this ugliness by insisting it was good....more

dark academia vibes, dysfunctional friend group and unsolved murder SIGN ME UP!!
This was sooo good! I was invested since chapter 1 and I just kept getting hooked and wanted to know every single detail. There's a lot going on with each characters and I appreciated getting to read about each of their povs. The dual timeline was perfectly done and I doubted about everyone in the beginning, when all the pieces of the puzzle started fitting together I felt a rush of adrenaline. Really enjoyed thisss. I feel my thriller/mystery era coming......more

This has major Haunting of Hill House vibes, the creepy/haunted house setting reminded me of this show so much. At times I was reading this at night and I had to stop because I got scared and started getting chills. Once the puzzle pieces started aligning I was so excited to discover all the secrets the house and Maggie's parents were hiding. I started doubting everything and everyone as I usually do with thrillers and I just had a fun spooky time reading this....more

I enjoyed the dysfunctional friend group we follow. A subject I find interesting is dreams, the exploration of lucid dreaming in this book although brief and not too deep made it so interesting. There is dual pov and timelines. I eager to keep reading. There were some mind-blowing moments that I didn't see coming. The ending was just okay, was expecting something more I guess, but still amazing!!...more
