Raven’s Gate is a story about an orphaned, British boy with magical powers who fights evil, black-magic-weilding witches. While that description may sound like a Harry Potter knock-off, this book is unique, surprisingly gory, and dark for a story aimed at children in their mid-teens. It took my ADD-addled brain a few attempts to get going with this book, but the story is compelling even from the beginning. Once I was able to get settled in without distractions, I quickly found myself drawn into the action. By the end of the book, I was so immersed that I actually caught myself biting my nails!
If you are looking for an easy, fun read, can handle gore, and enjoy dark, supernatural storylines, I would highly recommend this book. I’m really looking forward to reading the next four installments of the series!...more

I mostly enjoyed it, but it just SEEMED like a man trying to write from a woman’s point of view. The topics of beauty and “landing a man were, of course, central to this story, as happens with most stories lead by women characters. It just was mostly hollow and didn’t resonate with me much. I think the setting was right, the book was set in a time and place where these things were vitally important to how women were forced to make their lives, but I just want to read a different story for once, you know? But, I guess that’s partly on me for choosing a revamped classic fairy tale. Lol. How do you talk about Cinderella, a story where a man “falls in love with a woman based upon her appearance at one fancy dance, and not have the appearance of women the primary focus? I mean, I have some ideas, but I am not a writer and this book is already written. So, okay....more
I don’t even know what to say. I expected so much more than a sixth-grade level poem from Meghan Markle.

The pictures are cute though. The illustrator, Christian Robinson, is the only reason this book gets two stars.
I’m just so disappointed. I was excited about this book, and wow. It is NOT good, and it’s weird. I guess this book is about a bench she gave Prince Harry that he sits and hangs out with his kid on? I’m just so confused.
People who are rating this book five stars must have read a different book than I did. Lol
6/22/21 Update: Over the weekend I read this book with some friends kids that I babysat. They are 5 and 7 years old. It made me laugh when they said they thought the poem was “weird and “boring because those are also the words I used/would use to describe it. ...more

Although I had several issues with this book and the way Samantha Markle presents herself, I give it four stars for entertainment value. I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about Samantha Markle’s life and how she views her relationships with Meghan Markle and other family members. However, if you are looking for gossip about Meghan Markle that you haven’t read in the tabloids, this is not the book for you....more
