pretty generic in terms of the 'villainess is sent back in time and tries to do everything differently and avoid the male leads, only to then inadvertently attract the attention of the male leads' genre (WILD that that is a whole ass genre now but i support!!!), but still enjoyable nonetheless. It has its unique moments and the characters are fun so far, will definitely be continuing! ...more
okay im not gonna lie, this was WAY too goofy for me and it was also boring as hell. For a series marked as young adult, the writing SCREAMS3 / 5 stars
okay im not gonna lie, this was WAY too goofy for me and it was also boring as hell. For a series marked as young adult, the writing SCREAMS middle grade (i can't imagine an adult enjoying this based on this volume alone) and the artstyle is also ugly to me. It genuinely reads like a volume of Captain Underpants, like the writing and art are pretty much in line with that. Supposedly it gets good around volume 9 and gets REALLY good at around volume 40, but idk if I will put in the leg work for that yet. I'll read the next two volumes and decide but this was extremely underwhelming....more

okay so it's crazy to hit 50% in a book and NOTHING has happened yet. Like I'm being deadly serious, the whole premise of this plot (Rosa and Mariano meet and try to sneak off the isle together) has already happened. They have just met and he has just agreed to help her, and the book is already half over!!!? I'm not going to give a rating because in fairness i didn't actually finish the book, but this truly was the blandest first half of a book ive read in recent times, the imagery isn't too bad but im not the biggest fan of the writing style to be honest (and the insta-love is unfortunately strong with this one). like if the time had been spent building up a really rich backstory i would have been fine with that but it just felt like padding to waste time unfortunately. Wasn't a fan of this one :( also where is the cute serpent from the cover!? he's the whole reason i read this and he remains unseen at this point :( ...more

I finished this yesterday but didn't have time to update this because I was already straight onto the next book. THIS series is perfection and I'm already about to finish the 3rd book. I don't want it to end (ever) but I can't look away, physically cannot stop turning the page!!!...more

Surprisingly loved this a lot! The dialogue is very much like Gideon the Ninth (in a good way) but the plot is far more straightforward (thank goodness, it being a short novel and all). The world building was excellent and I felt so taken in by all the little details, and although the plot was somewhat easy to figure out it was not so in a bad way--it was a pleasant journey with excellent writing!...more

im SO absolutely gagged. how did y'all let me go on this long without having read this!!! it's unfathomable. This is one of the best books ive read not only all year, but EVER. I read this in one sitting because I physically could not put it down, not even to sleep. The very definition of a page turner, and I am going to devour this series, i just know it!
After a particularly bad string of YA dystopia reads i was worried i just fell out of favour with the genre, but THIS. THIS is what was missing, the other books felt like poor imitations of this, with flat, lifeless characters. But THIS is what i needed, these characters are alive off the page because you can feel THEM and not the author. Any decisions they make, any mistake, any growth they have, they all feel like the characters in their natural element instead of an author pulling strings to make the plot happen the way they want. This was fucking phenomenal. Give Ms. Sabaa Tahir her flowers!!!...more
