I wonder how it was researched. Reading th4 book after watching the TV series is not wise. It made the reading a little bit of a slog, as it was all familiar, if not perfectly recalled. My motivation for doing this exercise was to find out about the "different" ending. Well guess what? The only minor difference in the endings was the location was spelled out in the book, whereas the TV series led one to believe they were in Finland or America....more

Even though I wasn't foolish enough to buy a business, I did make several similar mistakes. Nice to know I wasn't alone! If you've spent any time in the caribbean, you'll recognize several of Wouk's charachters!

I can easily see this as a movie, given Dan Brown's track record probably will. A fun thriller set in Spain, if you've been you'll recognize many of the settings. An interesting comment on contemporary US politics, not sure if that is intentional or just a sign of the times.
I thought the pace was a little slow in the middle (maybe thats just the part intended to be cut in the screenplay). I appreciated the upbeat ending and overall, I'm not sorry I read it. It must be tough for the author to live up to his previous successes, and maybe I'm overly critical because of how good his previous books have been!

A fascinating look at the lives of 18th century english seamen. Also a gripping and sometimes grisly tale of survival under extreme conditions. Also a look at the mechanism of imperialism and the legal system to support it. Highly recommended!...more
