Apparently I have read a few novels by Long before. Looking at my reviews, I enjoyed them, but there was nothing in particular that set them apart from all the other historical romances I read. I suspect that all falls on me, not Long.
And just as the other stories were fine, I found this one wonderful. I don’t know if it was the timing, the characters, the pandemic, or what. All I know is that I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I have already checked on the second volume in the series. I am so grateful for ebooks and for Long’s wonderful tales.

She survived three jumps and a belly-flop, because the curse did indeed have to keep her alive until her twelfth birthday. Wicked fairies put a lot of work into their curses, and they hate to see them thwarted by unfortunate accidents.
I don't count many of my juvenile books on this log. Mostly, I read them to my grandchildren and move on. However, I read this one for me. After finishing T. Kingfisher's Thornhedge, I realized that she is also Vernon and that in that mode she had written the Hamster Princess series. Several clicks on Libby and I had the first volume to read. (I love ebooks - don't even have to go out in the heat.)
It was fun to read a very different retelling of this fairy tale. I am glad I read them both....more

It won't be banned in my county because no school librarian will dare buy it. However, if they could, our school board would ban it from everywhere.

What I do know is that this was a wonderful novel. Bronsky knows when and how to make us laugh at Walter. But also she shows us why we should care for and love Walter. He is human, as is his wife, Barbara and their children. By the end, I didn't want to let any of them leave my life....more

November 2023 - I think about this novel so often. Probably I should listen to it so I have the opportunity to hear the words. Here are some quotes to remind me why I found this to be one of the best books.
“So, time heals. Mostly. Sometimes carelessly. And in unsuspecting moments, the pain catches and reminds one of all that's been missing. The fulcrum of what might have been. But then it passes. Winter moves into spring and swallows return. The proximity of new skin returns to the sheets. Beauty does what is required. Jobs fulfill and conversations inspire. Loneliness becomes a mere Sunday. Scattered clothes. Empty bowls. Rotting fruit. Passing time. But still life in all its beauty and complexity.
“There are moments in life, so monumental and still, that the memory can never be retrieved without a catch to the throat or an interruption to the beat of the heart. Can never be retrieved without the rumbling disquiet of how close that moment came to not having happened at all.
“The choice for the educated woman was clear and stark. Marriage and no creative expression. Or convent and creative expression. So, women entered the convent in order to paint. Such was the sacrifice. But when have women not sacrificed to live as they feel? Not all of us will embrace men, marriage, motherhood.
“In time, Cress hoped to lose his fear of poetry, especially the stuff that didn’t rhyme. Cress was a facts man, and facts were stone. Poetry, though, was sand. Ever compared to stars in its granular infinity. Ever shifting. ...more
