Love, in English is more than a story of boy meets girl. It's a story about two people finding each other despite the barriers of age, race, expectation and circumstance and falling helplessly in love. A love so big, so loud, so consuming that it cannot be denied. To me, the greatest love stories are the ones that never should have happened. So let me tell you and little more about Vera and Mateo....

Young. Tattooed. Promiscuous. Vera is what many would consider a bad girl. She forms no real attachments to anyone beside her family and even those bonds are shaky at best. All of these outward appearances maintain Vera's facade as a wild child but she is more than meets the eye. In fact, she is smart (astronomy student), introverted, and kinda lonely. She has constructed a suit of armor that has kept many at bay.
Until Mateo...
Sensual. Passionate. Married. First and foremost, Mateo is a 100% gentleman through and through. Despite his many roles: former soccer player, business man, husband and father, Mateo in many ways is as lost as Vera. With no true sense of identity, Mateo finds a kindred spirit in the wild girl who sits beside him on the bus to Acantilado. Their friendship is almost immediate and Mateo and Vera develop a connection that starts to take shape and morph into something more....
Now to address the elephant in the room: Yes, this is a love story between a single woman and a married man. Yes, there is cheating. But I think one of the strongest points of this story is just how hard these two fight to not give in to those baser urges that come with the attraction and temptation. This is not a story where two people are carried away by their lust. Not all affairs are black and white. This is a story of two people falling in love because they had no choice.
I had the privilege of beta-reading Love, in English and to say this is Karina's best work yet is an understatement. I love EIT. I love TAT. Pretty much anything Karina has written I have been a fan, because her characters are fun, her stories are exciting and she is the queen of sexual tension (Dex and Perry, anyone?). But her strengths as a writer were put to the test when a married man was the love interest. She managed to make two people so likeable, so connected, so full of love that it would be hard not to sympathize with the position they are in.
Love, in English is so much more than just boy meets girl. It's a story of two people from opposite sides of the world that find something in each other that makes them question what it is to live and what it is to just be alive. I dare you not to be moved by the story of Vera and Mateo.

Pawn: The weakest piece on the chessboard, yet the only piece that has the ability to become stronger. It is dangerous and versatile.
Luisa is a good girl surrounded by evil men. Selfless, compassionate, gentle; the qualities that strengthen her character are the ones that weaken her once she finds herself immersed in the world of cartel leader, Salvador Reyes. Salvador approaches Luisa with an offer of marriage; an offer she cannot refuse. Sacrificing a life of normalcy and happiness in order to secure the very same for her parents, Luisa becomes a pawn to the sadistic Salvador in a game full drugs, violence and rape. Despite the frailty of her situation, Luisa soon finds herself in a position of power when she becomes the possession of rival cartel leader Javier Bernal.
King: The most important chess piece of the game. No material equivalency can be applied to the King because his "loss" means the end of the game, therefore he is considered "invaluable"
Javier is a man of many faces: The merciless villain, the gorgeous Lothario, the cruel gentleman. He is Sinner and Saint. Heaven and Hell. Quite simply, Javier is a King amid subjects and a God among men. What started as a seductive prelude to Javier in The Artist's Trilogy has now turned into a delicious continuation with Dirty Angels. Javier is back with a vengeance and he is taking hostage of a woman strong enough to break him: Luisa Reyes.
En Prise: A French term meaning "in a position to be taken".
When Javier captures Luisa, she is a means to an end: a sacrifice for his organizations greater good. But Javier's motivations are slightly selfish once he sees the fire and fight she refuses to tame. The relationship that develops between them quickly blurs the lines of captor and captive. Javier's charming wit, sexual prowess and undeniable appeal awakens something in Luisa that she doesn't understand yet cannot fight. But Javier is lesser of all evils in the game that is rapidly evolving.
Smothered Mate: A form of checkmate where the King is unable to escape check because his own friendly pieces prevent him from moving.
With Javier's henchmen Este, Franco, and The Doctor inflicting their swift brand of torture and retaliation upon whomever they please, Luisa is constantly in danger. To them, she is expendable but to Javier she is an enigma that threatens his own moral code as well as his own notions about love. As the sexual tension between them reaches fever pitch, the ultimate power struggle ensues that elevates Luisa from a pawn into a Queen.
Queening the Pawn: In all cases of queening, a pawn is “queened once it has reached the opposite end of the board.
Dirty Angels is a story about power vs. weakness, good vs. evil, strategy vs. threat. All in all, it's like a game of chess with the addition of scorching hot sex. Now the subject matter may scare some people off but the themes present in this story are worth the sometimes-violent journey. Luisa is one hell of a heroine. She is strong and brave and compliments Javier in a way that makes this larger-than-life villain human.
Queen: The strongest piece on the chessboard.
But don't worry, Javier is still the same ruthless, cunning, and deceitful man we all love to silently (or loudly) root for. He is one of the most fascinating characters I have had the pleasure of reading and every word out of his mouth is pure gold. This is one of my favorite books of 2014 and I am eagerly anticipating Dirty Deeds.
Endgame: The part of the game where the King should come out and fight.

Review:
Dex and Perry are back y'all!
Ashes to Ashes takes place a couple months after and things are looking pretty good for our favorite duo. Their web-show EIT with the lovely addition of Rebecca is doing well. Perry and Dex's relationship is stronger than ever.
“I just…I wanted you to know that. I know I can seem…distant sometimes. I know I’m always in my head and sometimes I’m just a little too quiet. But you’re the most important thing to me. You keep me grounded, you hold me in place, you make me feel real. I love you, Dex. I hope this lets you know that.
What could go wrong?
I think the problem is something you won’t see coming. I think the problem will come in the form of someone who is trustworthy. And when I think he comes, he will bring you here. Where everything will end.
The events that transpire after Dex, Perry and Rebecca head to Oregon to investigate a haunted school can only be described as insane. Between dead children causing insane amounts of terror and mischief...
She didn’t say anything. She just stared at me. And ever so slowly smiled, displaying a mouth soaked with blood.
and some intense swoon-y moments with Dex...
He watched me for a few loaded beats before he closed his eyes.
“Yes. Sorry. I’m okay, I’m just…I’m your fucking man, baby. That’s all there is to it, I’m your fucking man. That is never going to change.
Ashes to Ashes has officially dethroned as my favorite Experiment in Terror novel to date. I laughed, cried, hid under the covers, and held my breathe. Being back in Perry's head felt like home. Perry is one complex and emotional character. She has changed so much from that awkward girl in Darkhouse. And Dex, well what can I say that hasn't already been said? He is hilarious, sexy, exhilarating, and thank god he is fictional, because I would possibly leave my boyfriend for him.
While I am devastated that there is only one more book left in the EIT series, so far it is one hell of a ride, and there is plenty more to come....

Infinite stars I don't award these lightly, but Ashes to Ashes has topped the list of my favorite book of 2013, as well as my favorite EIT novel to date....more
